Seeing that picture from Christmas Day 1983 really resonated with me, I moved from the UK to SA at age 6 in February 1983, that Christmas Day my whole family and some family friends spent the day at the Holiday Inn at Jan Smuts airport...strange to think that we were all having a great day, eating until bursting and everyone smiling and happy while all of you brave souls were up there keeping the wolf away...thank you all from the bottom of my heart for affording me the best childhood a kid could ever imagine having.

Much respect Leon. I can only imagine how this feels. I served for 15 years RASigs and RAAF. A handful of my friends passed during Service. Sometimes I ask them for advice, and from the stillness and in the quietness I get the awareness of what they would do in the situation. It's a nice connection to the memory of their spirit/manner/personality. Much empathy Leon. Thank you for your service especially standing against communism.

I was one of those called up, served in SVN, I never met anyone in the Army who had my birthday, I was watching an interview of Normie Rowe and he said there were “special” ballots held for “special categories”, apparently I was a “special category” because I was living and working overseas when I was drafted. I actually came back to Australia to answer the Call-Up. It’s weird, I went to a reunion about 20 years ago, I naturally reminisced and was shocked at the memories of old comrades. Their memories were so different from the events I recalled. We lost a bloke, he was missing for years, the Australian authorities had given up and one of our blokes went to Vietnam and had an Advertisement put in the local paper near where he went missing. The ONLY serving NVA who could point to his location came forward and 30 years after the event in vastly changed terrain that had been cleared for agriculture, took them to where he was buried. I didn’t go to collect him, but my Patrol Commander did, the Minister of Religion who went described the exhumation and return, my old Patrol Commander was very emotional. In all the timer I knew him, he never mentioned those events, we all thought he was a hard man. Ironically, the Minister and I talked at a Memorial Service for a young Captain who had been killed by an IED in Afghanistan. Before he went to Afghanistan for his 2nd tour the young Captain had told me he decided to get out of the Army and enrol in a Teaching Degree, he only went for the 2nd tour to top-up the money he had saved so he could study. Strange how these things happen? My Grandfather ran away from home, went to the Boer War, came back and was jailed for “Sedition” in World War 1 for his anti-conscription speeches. He said he was warned the Police were after him and he climbed up on the stand and said “God Save the King” and was arrested, charged and imprisoned, he said to disqualify him from the next parliamentary elections. Then came World War 2, in respect of those, my Father was in the old coastal artillery and was called up at the start. My Grandfather would give his consent to my Uncle joining, so he ran away, got a job on a ship, jumped ship in New Zealand and joined the Kiwi Army. These days, I try to talk any and every person out of joining or into getting out, if they are in the Armed Forces, I can’t see how being a member of the Australian Defence Forces is a fit occupation for anyone.
