- Nhl hockey 2024 - After choosing my team canada roster featuring connor mcdavid sidney crosby connor bedard nathan mackinnon and more, it's time to project team usa for the four nations faceoff and olympics. We'll obviously see auston matthews tkachuk brothers quinn and jack hughes but who else? It was fun to do these picks today . why? their best player is matthews who will be playing with a worse playmaker, as of right now half of their roster doesn't even have playoff experience, and the ones with the most experience are choke artists in the playoffs (Matthews slavin & mcavoy) their goalies as a candian scare me tho ill give you that

Don't think I can improve this team. What a stacked line-up. Amazing how deep US hockey is right now.
There is more registered hockey players in USA than Canada these days, i think this was broken in 2021. Hockey culture is changing and i think Canada will be on the losing side as long they continue relying on individuals.

42% of NHL skaters are Canadian almost half the NHL. 29% are American, So relying on individuals? we could make 6 nasty teams and the states prolly have 2. This team looks good but what would be left over compared to Canada.

@@imulippo5245 that actually makes zero sense lol so saying we have 43 players out of 100 is relying on individuals. But the states relying on only 29 of those individuals to be good isn't relying on individuals. Usually when there is less of something you're relying on it more lol.

When you have less individual skill, such in case of Finland, you obviously want to maximize your collective ability by relying cohesion within the team - instead of looking at those individual's skills.
I’m Canadian as well but holy crap USA has a terrifying team all around, especially if we don’t have Makar. Front to back they are elite.
Canada needs better goalie depth, we are definitely lacking there compared to the US. Thank god for Mcdavid, Mackinnon and the fact Crosby is still ageless or id feel like American has every time they played Canada in the past.
I'm American, and the Canadian net is not an issue because if Aiden Hill is healthy, this year's stats say he may be the best goalie in the league. And....a Cup winner. You know he's clutch. Even if Hill is not available, the other Canadian goalies are solid. What is the difference between a .925 save percentage and a .918 save percentage? 6 goals per one thousand shots or about 1 goal every 166 shots. Canada is fine in net.

The best thing about Tkachuk is that he's a shit on the ice but he's *great* in the room. He knows what it takes to be a captain of an NHL team, and he's not afraid to do the dirty work himself and fire up his team. He leads by example and everyone's seeing that in Florida. I think he'd do great as the C, though honestly, there's about five other really great leaders in this proposed team, and they couldn't really go wrong with Quinn Hughes or one of the vets or hell, even Brady.
He just had 4 points he isn’t shit on the ice, he has the highest points this calendar year so far, at least if I remember correctly.

@@KevinBrevin Bro there's a big difference between "shit on the ice" and "*A* shit on the ice" and Matthew Tkchuck is absolutely 100% the latter. He's a fucking fantastic player but if there's a Panthers scrum happening, he's almost always in the middle of it.
Slavin is an underrated beast of a D man. Imagine how good you have to be to be the top defenseman on the Hurricanes. He's basically the foundation for the entire Hurricanes lineup. Where do you put your best scorers with defensive liabilities? Infront of Slavin. Who do you pair you defenseman who plays like a forward? With Slavin.
first time I can remember where I don't believe USA is gonna be an underdog against Canada, they gonna go toe to toe and it will be glorious to watch

Finally someone see's Jake Sanderson the same way I do. He's already good and is going to be even better by 2026.
I think it's important to note here that by advanced metrics, Quinn Hughes has been one of the top 5 DEFENSIVE defensemen in the league the last two years. So that top pairing is also pretty good defensively. Scary team.
With Miller between the 2 brothers you'll get either a zillion goals or they'll be end up fighting eachother

You also got Hanifin, werenski and Trouba on D, Tuch, Boeser, and Kreider on offense, this team has insane depth.

That's a scary superhouse team. This will elevate the sport finally having NHL players in International competition. We have been through the dark ages of not seeing Best V Best for so long. It was a mistake that lasted too long if you ask me. The lack of Foresight is now with Captain Hindsight for now. How do you not let the best hockey player athletes in the world play at the most watched, skilled, entertaining and prideful hockey events on EARTH!!!! Let's GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Caufield over Boldy is certainly a choice. Also Faber has a damn good chance.
First of all, Jack's 5'11" he's not that small. He's got 2 roughing penalties this season so, I'm not sure how much I'm worried about the New Jack Hughes getting pushed around.
That said, I like your lines better than what I've seen from NHL Network and some other places. Well done.
No Swayman is straight up disrespectful he has been one of if not the best goalie in the entire NHL this year and if you look at the numbers he has saved the bruins from being a wildcard team

That's definitely one helluva lineup. Little weak on the D, maybe, but up front that's hard to match.
Jesus that team is utterly spooky . I mean god damn . Tbh a great choice for captain would be Larkin . While he’s obviously not the best player by any means on this team . He’s a very hardworking lead by example kind of player and great in the locker room .

I would not put the Tkachuk's together because I want every line to have some grit, so I need to spread them out. I'd put Matthew on the first line with Hughes and Matthews. I also want Jacob Trouba on defense for the same "grit "reason, alongside one of the more offensive-minded defensemen. The US goalie depth is great. In the Canadian projection, Johnny downplayed the Canadian goalies a bit. Let me be clear, you only need one goalie if he is healthy, and if Aiden Hill, the stats leader and Stanley Cup champion, is healthy, Canada is good in net.
I think my first line would be
M. Tkachuk- mathews - Keller (or Hughes if he will switch )
That's basically Hyman, Matthew's, Marner.with a bigger mire skilled version of Hyman, and a marner with a higher scoring threat
For team USA, I'd go with either Matthew Tkachuk or Auston Matthews to be the captain.

I just want to point out some of the guys that he didnt mention that could easily be on this team too. be scared Canada, be scared. Joe Pavelski, Matt Boldy, Jake Guentzal, Chris Kreider, Trocheck, Charlie Coyle, Brock Nelson, Frank Vatrano, Casey Mittlstadt, Blake Coleman, Brock Faber, Shane Gostisbehere, Alex Tuch, Zach Werenski, and many others chomping at the bit.
More depth than Canada’s team, imho, especially between the pipes. Scary team to play against, for sure. Russia might be 5th best team, at best.
Team USA will be interesting as you left out a lot of other players who could make the team such as Boldy, Swayman, Faber, Luke Hughes, Kane, Boeser, Kreider, and Trouba. Boldy and Boeser haven't done a whole lot to prove themselves of being on the roster over these other guys, but they could replace Keller or Debrincat and the team wouldn't be any better or worse.
Matt Tkachuk has my vote for C for the chaos, if not Quinn or Larkin, since they're both actually captains (honestly I'd lean Larkin since he's more of a vet but on the 4th line here)
Can’t rule out Joey Daccord from the goalie conversation, most nights he’s the only one keeping the Kraken in the wildcard race. Plus he was standing on his head against Boston the other night

The US is somewhat like Canada in that they have several players "in the wings" who could step in if required or perhaps they could have a Team B. I have no issues with the your selections but as you stated, the lines may not have the right chemistry. Putting the two Tkachuks on the same line is probably not a great fit. I always prefer the logical line of playmaker, digger, and scorer. So the first line with Hughes and Thompson is probably worth reconsidering.
Putting the Tkachuks on their opposite wings is a sin Johnny.

Great vid but not having Matthews as captain is a little crazy, he's shown his leadership in the biggest hockey city in the world and is the best and most dominant goal scorer right now.

I think it will be fabulous! Honestly, I would not take a bet on this tourney. Notwithstanding Canada and the US, with the guys they've got, I think Sweden can win it. And the Finns, without many big-name Defensemen, will still have every guy playing that 200-foot grind-it-out game they are noted for. They'll be tough to play. A lot will depend on how all these big-name guys gel with their linemates, don't you think? That Crosby-Marchand-Bergeron line, for example, in past years. If players on any team find chemistry, look out! It's going to be great!
Quin Hughes as a captain makes a lot of sense
Been telling people that this is going to be the team to beat. Mostly based on the goalie options.
Love that you put Sanderson on this team. Although he's on a shit team like Ottawa, he's been quietly unbelievable every night, fantastic skater and player

Could you imagine Fox decided not to be a little primadonna and decided to actually sign for the canes whenever we acquired him via the Dougie trade? The Slavin/Fox line would be the best pairing in all of hockey... but nooooo Fox just had to play for the rags..... f that guy.
Instead of Caulfield as the extra forward, I'd go for a veteran guy and maybe some will laugh, but I'd pick Brock Nelson from the Islanders. He's a good utility guy, can fit anywhere if there are injuries, and not hurt you. He can also snipe.
I would add an alternate line if they were trailing in the third. How about all three Hughes brothers together? Yeah, i know, not gonna happen, but just putting it out there.
maybe i'm just being a homer, but it feels wrong not seeing perennial 40 goal scorer Jake Guentzel on this list. 34 goals in 58 playoff games says 'big game player' too.
I for the most part agree with this roster and would 100% make Tkachuk the captain. If anyone can lead team USA to a championship it’s him.
Quinn Hughes SHOULD be Captain but Im almost certain it will be Auston Matthews.

Please do a team sweden and finland, it's too bad they can't do a 6 nation tourney. I went and checked the numbers for NHLers from each country and Russia and Czech could have a team. Czech has 32 players in the NHL. as it will be a NHL tournament that makes sense. I think the ban on russia is why that didn't happen.
The Tkachuk bros are the torunament wild card... but team canada will be flying and they will have to be on to keep up...can't wait for this. well overdue.
They should do it every year, no more all star game. some years they could do it in Europe. The NHL should really start pushing hockey in the UK and France, London and Paris as host cities....

This might sound crazy, but I don't think McAoy or Fox make this team. They aren't big enough, and aren't good enough defensively or on the PK. My D pairs

I know it was only an All-Star game, but last year the Atlantic rolled both Tkachuks on the ends with Barkov in the middle, and now I can't help but ask myself "If things don't improve in Ottawa, does Brady ask for a trade to Florida?".
