In this video, Jeremy Cioara covers the Quality of Service (QoS) tools at your disposal in network environments. Many of these mechanisms perform similar functions but use different methods. Understanding the effect each tool is designed to have will allow you to know when to leverage the most appropriate approach in a given situation.
QoS tools often have the same goals but approach a situation in various ways. This begins with classification, identifying different traffic types so a sysadmin can properly prioritize them. Marking is an optional phase of QoS, but can be an incredibly useful systematic approach that simplifies long-term network maintenance. Policing throttles down traffic, which is most often applied when you need to limit or eliminate peer-to-peer sharing. This is the only “anti-QoS” tool in our inventory. Shaping, on the other hand, is a much friendlier approach directed at traffic that needs to be managed instead of mitigated. Congestion avoidance is an efficient way to manage potential bandwidth overload. Arguably the most powerful QoS tool is queueing, which prioritizes packets based on predetermined protocols.

Would love to see a proper QoS/CoS series covering Service Provider to customer QoS implementations. Taking each of the tools mentioned in this MicroNugget and mapping to real world use cases

NBAR how it pratically works (inspection based on which layers/identifiers), how does the switch build up application data table and how does it share this with other tools that can benefit QoS analytics? How does it work together with Netflow? I obvously struggle to understand NBAR and do not have the time to read a 200 page book about it. ;-)

Hi Jeremy..It would be great if you can create a micro nugget with a live example of how packets are getting classified in an ACL,how it is policed , how it is wrandom detected and finally how it is shaped...Would like to follow a packets right from classification till it leaves the interface using shaping...Thank you.

Jeremy-do you have a course dedicated to QoS, or can you recommend the best pieces to learn in on the CBT Nuggets site? In one of the voice, (I think), nuggets it sounds like you mention a dedicated course. Thanks

Could you possibly make a micro nugget about the real infrastructure of the internet, the details about what happens when packets leave our home networks? Thanks.

How can i calculate CBS (committed burst size) for FE interface according to CAR (committed access rate) Methodology and the token bucket Logarithm.
Note: The CIR (committed information rate) for FE interface is 1024 kbps.
