  • The beautiful barracks of Ruthven near Kingussie in the Highlands of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Little known and often missed by visitors to this area, Ruthven Barracks was the site of the final Jacobite battle of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s 1745/1746 ill-fated campaign.
Just days after being defeated at Culloden on the 16th April 1746 thousands of Jacobites descended up on British garrison outpost at Ruthven near Kingussie much time the horror of the handful of British redcoat soldiers based here!

Och goodness, that’s where I grew up 😊 There’s a churchyard tucked beside the river in Kingussie which has some really old graves in it. John Macpherson, Ruthven barrack master is buried there, along with his children. The stones have incredible lettering on them.

London, England, yes…but not Scotland. My loss. Now I’m too old and broken, to travel. Thank you, for sharing the absolute BEAUTY of Scotland. Blessings, from this old man in northeast Tennessee. Used to pass this place regulariy on the way to my German Stalker pals at the Invreshie House Hotel at nearby Kincraig, back in the eighties, stunning area. Lighting at night is positively haunting and dramatic.
Always meant to have a look round the Barracks but sadly never got around to it. Really enjoyed your video.
Used to do battlefield renactments with an 18th Century replica three pounder, RFA Period Uniform the lot.
The coat and tricorn hat was surprisingly effective in inclement Highland Weather.
The 45 is a particular old hobby.
One of the first things you learn about the 45 is that many of The Redcoats were in fact Scottish.
The Argyll Militia,The Royal Scots(Pontuis Pilutes Bodyguard) The North British Fusiliers(Ayrshire),Gardiners Dragoons,The Glasgow Militia,The Cameronians, The Black Watch. Add to that Dutch,German, and French Hueganots and The 45 is not so clear cut as it would at first seem. There were English County and Household Regiments there they were by no means alone however.
There is a recorded incident at Ruthven of a Sergeant Molloy and a limited number of men defending The Barracks against a Superior Jacobite force when this was I do not know.
The Jacobite's later burned the place.
Dragoons inccidentaly could function as cavalry or infantry being 'armed to the teeth,' with sword and pistol,as well as musket and bayonet as opposed to cavalry carbine.

I’ve been right by Ruthven Barracks, but it was not a stop on our tour ☹️. My husband has gotten to explore there, though, when he was in the Kingussie area for a Clan MacPherson gathering. Even though I did not get to explore Ruthven, I did stay overnight in Newtonmore, just a wee bit down the A86. And, though it was after regular hours, I had arranged for a private tour of the Clan MacPherson Museum in Newtonmore. That area has a very special meaning for our family.

Cheers John! Thoroughly enjoyed your Tour, so much to learn about your beautiful Country. As an Englishwoman, I, like many other kids, were only taught about English history, we knew about Bonnie Prince Charlie, due to old films shown at the Saturday morning cinema, Rob Roy comes to mind. Queen Elizabeth 1 Cousin, Marybeing imprisoned and ultimately killed, I only learnt that she spent 20 years in fancy jail houses, from a TV programme. We've been the subjects of the propaganda machine for hundreds of years, still are lied to every day. I trust that you will set the record straight John. Your channel should soon grow with videos like these, AMAZING!! Will you be doing Sterling Castle? How on earth they built that is way beyond my imagination it seems to cling to the rocks! We've driven past it many times but as a wheelchair user, the only way to see around there, is through someone else's eyes, though they certainly wouldn't be as knowledgeable as you. I look forward to learning so much more from you John, you missed your calling as a Teacher and that's a fact. Much love chez 😘😘😘

thank you for this! i was visiting kingussie and newtonmore around 3 weeks ago and pulled over to take photos of ruthven as i passed! a truely remarkable sight amongst incredible scenery, the flood basin was full at the time wich for me added to the beauty.
so thankful for the thorough and entertaining information in the video, and for giving me the chance to look around without having to swim over!
p.s love your other channel aswell!

Thank you for the fascinating and lovely video. When I attended Kent State University in Ohio, USA, back in 1982 they had low and high beer based on alcohol content. Only other time I've ever heard of that. I started school a year late so I was quite popular buying for everyone.

What an amazing place. I bet the room above the bakery was the warmest of the lot!! Has anything ever been found in or around the area? Bet you'd love to detect there - though I don't suppose it's allowed. Thanks for taking us around 🙂

What a fantastic tour, mate! You've really reignited a passion for the history of my homeland! Do you recommend any books on Scottish history, John?

Well there’s a lot to choose from. A history of Scotland by the now controversial Neil…. Scotland 2,000 years of history by Goering….. the Scottish Nation by Tom Devine…. History of a Nation by David Ross are good starting points
      Enjoy!! 😆
