I agree - Zoysia is not a dought tolerant grass in Texas!
I have a mixture of Zeon and Zorro Zoysia which are very thin blade cultivars. I live in the Brazos valley of Texas and it is very hot throughout the summer. Our soil has a lot of clay and anything over 15 minutes of watering in my rotor zones is wasted by run-off. To get deep watering, which is important to encourage deep root growth, I have to run multiple 15 minute cycles per day. My soil responds very well to a water - soak - water regime. Because I have 11 zones, the soak cycle lasts 1.5 hours. Three days a week of two 15 minute cycles combined with the soak interval does well for normal 95 degree no rain weather. If the temperatures climb higher and relative humidity drops or the no rain period lengthens into a drought, I have to add extra cycles by adding days. If we get supplemental rain like we have been getting this year, I can cut back to only two days a week.

Planted Palisades Zoysia in Dallas during spring in a tree shaded area, to replace St. Aug, which could not withstand the shade. Not holding up very well now..... will increase watering, though another site said to hold back as Zoysia is tolerant of heat.... over watering will cause fungus. I'm going with Chadd's tips here....
Your Zoysia would be less tolerant of the shade than the St Augustine.
If you are getting less than 6 hours of light, it will be tough.
Zoysia is definitely not heat resistant!! I guess with enough water it can be. If you are mowing and detaching properly, that will help with preventing fungus.
100% true it is not drought tolerant. But the best time to water zoysia grass in South Florida where we have sandy soil is early in the morning and later in the day 6pm or 7pm for 15-20 minutes per zone
In South Florida, more is better!! We struggle with it here in north Florida.
@@bettercallchadd it's just from my experiences so wish it does better in Sandy soil that is well treated with humic, biochar, peat moss, kelp, and chicken poop kelp and a moisture manager. Once you have all that you should be good. I make most of the stuff at home so it's easy for me to take care of it
My city only allows 2 days a week watering. My zoysia is brown and crunchy in the sun areas. Under the Juniper tree, it's greenish. Also doesn't help that it was just sodded last fall and both neighbors have yards that just consist of weeds.
That's tough. Full sun zoysia definitely needs more water than that. You can add darker soils to the full sun areas.
Took me awhile to figure how much and how long to water. Like you said so many variables. I would water not deep enough. Then end up having to water again. To make up the difference. This kept the blades wet to often. And didn't allow the water to reach the roots. This also caused me to have fungus issues. Thanks for all the info. You and Allen aka The lawn care nut. Lol…believe it or not, I have zoysia along the parkway in the front of my house, my front yard is St. Augustine, and my backyard is a combination of St. Augustine and Bermuda. I didn’t plan it that way, that’s how it was when I bought the house. The zoysia along the parkway in front has drip watering, and it’s the best looking grass anywhere on my property.
If you don't care for St.augustine, it usually ends up getting mixed with bermuda.
It's awesome that the drip irrigation is doing the job. Saves some money on your water bill as well.
I'm on north Florida. (Ocala) Do these rules apply to me as well? What about the week long over night frost days in the winter? Still water once a week?
I use county water lol 340 per month. I think getting a well should be a next step. Can’t keep it as green as I would like
A well is the way to go. I tell all my customers with a well. No reason they should have a dry lawn. Lol
