I’m a director by trade. And this is one of the best storyboarded trailers in cinematic history. The level of nuance and storytelling in 5 minutes is better than nearly 20 years of story blizzard has ruined in one expansion
This is an alternate universe, yeah. Specifically an alternate universe and also in the past. This was the moment where Grom first drank the blood, but in this universe his son Garrosh intervened and told him that it was a trap and that he’d be enslaved by the demons.
Ya, people need to take off there rose colored glasses. WOD is definitely not the best expansion, but the effort that went into this trailer trumps all others except maybe Battle for Azeroth.
Plot was terrible. If you tell a time travel story, then have only one character from current time interact with the old timeline (and he gets killed off about 5 hours in), you don't understand what time travel stories are for. They may as well have just called this World of "Warcraft II". A transparent excuse to bring back Gul'dan as a villain, since apparently their ability to think up new ones is so bad they have to go back to 20 year old greatest hits.
@@Arturhorn But..but Legion? We needed Gul'dan for Legion which was one of my favourite expansions, the last expansion when WoW actually felt like WoW.
This doesn't erase history. It's an alternate timeline and even that, as we see at the end, the portal is still being made and so the invasion still continues, just without the demonic blood in the orcs.
aljosa raketic Grommash was alive for the first invasion anyhow. He didn't die until Warcraft 3; Warcraft 1&2 happened before Mannoroth was properly finished off, and Grom didn't die until the explosion from Mannoroth killed him like what nearly happened in this scene.

For those who dont know the exact meaning of this cinematic, Garrosh travles back in time( With a homie bronze dragon guy) after escaping prison, Garrosh brings future technologi( as seen when they attack the big green fucker) The main character of the trailer is Garroshes Father "Grommash Hellscream" The axe is "Gorehowl". The guy who has a hood on in the begining and saves grommash is Garrosh. The drink is actually drunk in the main storyline that we know, but not here. The drink gives sick powers, but ur skin turns green and you will be easily mainuplated by the demon fkers. As Grommash says " What do we have to give in return" Gul`Dan is seen with red eyes and green skin as he is already possesed. Gul`dan knows this, but he only wants power for himself as he will be gifted with an even greater power if he makes them drink. The Dark portal will make them appear in our real timeline, even tho it seems the dreanor/outlands is in the past. Garrosh liked the old horde much more then the "new one" with alliances with tauren, troll ect.
"Big green fucker" is Mannoroth, lol. He's the #1 Pit Lord in the Burning Legion who enslaved the orcs, who originally come from Draenor, and used them to invade Azeroth, and he shows up prominently in Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos. What's funny is that in both realities, this one and the original, he gets killed by Grom Hellscream with a critical strike from his ax. I like how they referenced the cinematic in WC3 where Hellscream dies due to Mannoroth's body exploding, but only this time it's different because Garrosh saves him. Nice little tidbit for lore fans, especially those who enjoyed the WC3 campaign.
I don't remember Grom being so... huge. -Or... brown.- Never mind about the color. I forgot that was... apparently?... due to drinking Mannaroth's blood in the first place. And I just realized something. Blizzard Entertainment... is pulling a full-on _Star Trek_-style reboot here. Seriously. They are undoing a *major* event in the timeline and splitting things off from the original. Granted, the _Warlords of Draenor_ content is completely isolated in its own "time pocket", just like all the other retellings of major events (Black Morass, The Culling, Archimonde...), but still... So I guess it's not a blatant ret-con so much as a "what if?" sort of thing.
Yeah, well, I think every male character became huge after WoW started :P And I'd say the only thing they've signifcantly retconned was the Draenei's origins, and even then, they don't talk much about that except in the WC3 user's manual. Everything else, including the Pandaren, were always there since WC3 at least.
Marksman230591 If i didnt say green fucker and added all the thing u said no one would read and yes i know who he is :P Thx for adding the content for others tho
That slam dunk head cleave was so perfect and the sound it made when it went deep into mannoroth's was so satisfying. Props to the Animators and sound designer - 6 years later and it's still perfect!
Man, the detail in this is absolutely stunning. Almost makes you believe that the orcs are real and this is live action. The little things on Grommash and Garrosh, the hair, the cloth movement, the realistic muscle movement as Grom catches the axe, hell, even little drops of sweat tricling down Garrosh's brow from the heat. If the upcoming Warcraft movie doesn't pull off at LEAST this kind of quality for the orcs, I'll be very, very disappointed. Blizzard really sets the bar high with their cinematics.
3:19-3:28 I don't know how many dollars were put into these 10 seconds in particular but they were worth every penny. Garrosh in these 10 seconds is to this day the best and most realistic orc ever depicted.
That insane attention to detail in every Blizzard made cinematic always brings goosebumps to me, and I don't even play World of Wacraft anymore despite being a massive fan of the Warcraft series. However the fact that the game is going back to on the lore and even changing it slightly just means they want Warcraft to take a closer look at the original past and ask the all mighty "what if". Splendid idea I say. By insane detail I mean look at how that orc when he takes off his hood. You can see individual sweat drops move and pile up in strains. All those damn pores and single strands of hair. That damn explosion and the dance that the flames do each time. Much effort has gone into just a couple of minutes but damn, these are some juicy couple of minutes.
There's tons of people here saying the cinematic is great. Do we really need to go through every line and say if its good or not? That's some pretty stupid thinking.
It's a cool line, but the most underrated line from a Blizzard game, for me, still goes to Diablo from Diablo 2. "Not even death can save you from me."
WoD got so much hate from the majority of players but the soundtrack, questing and zones are all so great imho. Very memorable. My favorite place to level all these years later and just crank the music and ambiance.
they half assed everything like they do with every expansion. They rather milk out another expansion soon enough instead of completing the previous one
BountyFlamor Well, it sure was convincing to old Kilrogg a few months later, along with the rest of the Iron Horde. That's what happens when you don't kill Gul'dan once you have the chance.
zain gelous it doesn’t matter if it is not out yet. Both have the same flaw as both have dummy conflict story, dummy antagonist, made up reasons, etc. I see that Blizzard lost somehow the ability to properly tell a story and make players part of it, and to make matters worse, it is also happening outside the MMORPG genre and even outside of gaming. I only hope this view is flawed because I am getting too old
@@laughingraven it's more about the symbolism of it all rather than what's actually going on; garrosh has yet to succumb to the torture and no amount of it will change that. he still has the iron will from his father and thus will never be a slave
Because of this trailer i started to work out almost everyday at the gym. By the end of the exp (lfr hellfire citadel raid) i got my shape of my life at my late 20s, bulky and rather defined. Tyvm blizzard for giving me the best inspirational workout video ever!
"And what Gul'dan, must we give in return?" "Everything." Gul'dan, master of lies and manipulation chooses in that very moment out of all moments to be honest. Talk about a bad time to be honest for once. He would have been better off just lying and giving a more pleasant answer like saying "nothing Grom, its a gift," instead of saying "everything." idiot moment +1 for Gul'dan right there.
Yeah, that little chat was just a formality (or rule of cool). Gul'dan was probably already convinced that it's a done deal, and Grom was already planning on not doing it anyway.
I disagree. I feel like Garrosh would have done it anyway, he'd be like "Why would I drink this elixir?" "It will give you the power to conquer all!" "Downsides?" "You'll be my BDSM slave until you die, then I'll resurrect your corpse and you'll continue for eternity." "Will I glow red?" "...yes..." "Deal."
This cinematic was the ultimate illusion, I bought the expansion because of it! It sounded perfect, an enemy so badass you don't really want to fight him...
THAT SCENE WHERE MANNOROTH DIES!!!! Grom made the same movements as in the WC3 cinematic but got saved by Garrosh OH MY GOD IT'S SO WELL MADE!! IT INVOKED NOSTALGIA SINCE I LOVE WC3 AND HYPED ME UP EVEN MORE ABOUT THE EXPANSION!! THIS IS GONNA BE SO AWESOME I'M FANGIRL-ING LIKE CRAZY!
Nick Santillo Every day WoD drives me closer to unsubscribing. All I do daily is pet battle dailies and weekly raids. Got all my chars to 100 ffs. Can't be bothered to do Tanaan on all of them.
***** Yeah, I've not played in 2-3 months now, it just lost all interest for me... it basically turned into Apex farming, Garrison bullshit and *insert your other interest of pvp, pet battles or w/e* I've been playing WoW for 10 years and while I burned out, or became bored or needed a break, it was because I had been playing TOO much of it...with WOD, i stopped 3 times in it's 4 month period and this time is the last. Legion doesn't look like it's gonna fix any or the real problems imo. I personally recommend you save your money and just play other games
I still come back and watch this trailer, it is a reminder of a future that never happened, an expansion that did not fulfill its destiny and a blizzard that was lost forever. Times change :(
"The conflict coming will be the Alliance's finest hour" - Chris Metzen, senior VP of Story and Franchise Development. Not a single Alliance shown in the expansion unveiling.
Rist F.G. Villains or not, it's still all Horde lore. I'd rather have more Alliance lore characters become villains than not seeing any Alliance at all. At least Horde get that (in addition to their heroes always hogging the spotlight).
Marty Blois Blizzard will never make a Alliance a villan because they are supposed to be the heros and many alliance players would be mad at Blizzard when an Allaince guy became evil
Alliance were shown, King Varien at the beginning of the lore video, also, this is NOT the horde. This is the IRON HORDE, which is just a bunch of rogue orcs who want to conquer Azeroth in our current timeline because of Garrosh.
Wrath of the Lich King cinematic is still the greatest, right behind Warlords of Draenor, which is probably the best cinematic of all time. Wrath and Draenor are very different cinematics. They are BOTH a 10/10, but TIMES CHANGE......

What? Questing in Draenor itself was fun. The atmosphere was well developed and amazing. The music was beautiful. Dungeons and Raids were good. I like the idea of Garissons but I didn't like that it lowkey took over. It wasn't the best expansion but it wasn't terrible either
+Gabriella Rodriguez I think it's more the fact that end game is just grinding in Tanaan and running HFC on various difficulties. Questing was fun, just like in MoP, but there were even less dungeons (10 in MoP, 8 in WoD I think?)
+Elisa Cubero Saavedra Blizz Cinematics have always been beautiful, but what really failed was the game devs. Levelling and questing in WoD was great because of its storytelling, but the problem was that the dungeons and raids became repetitive - there was essentially no distinction between dungeon drops, and they encouraged everyone to queue for randoms. Or, once you were raiding, you'd go to the same place at different difficulties based on your gear. Also, once you hit 100, your Garrison/Docks took over because it wasn't worth going anywhere else besides Tanaan for dailies. The story levelling up, environments, music, and new character models were great highlights, and raid fights were still top-tier, although less varied than in the past. Really, most bosses--the first 7 or so--in HFC boiled down to "taunt at x stacks" for tanks. I still miss it since I unsubscribed, it was just badly balanced. TLDR: Blizz knows how to make cutscenes, but WoD was still fun 'till you hit 100 where the story stops, and Tanaan dailies begin. Dat music tho'!
+Elisa Cubero Saavedra Assuming that the upcoming Warcraft movie ends up as a blockbuster success, perhaps Blizzard could switch their industry focus from games to movies? :D
+Gabriella Rodriguez There are good things in WoD (mainly the things you listed), but overall, it easily ranks with most people as being the worst expansion to date. The story was butchered and either didn't make sense or wasn't very compelling outside of 2-3 zones. While the end of expansions always drag on for a long period, in previous expansions, this period would at least be filled with quality of life improvements and bug fixes (MoP in particular, there were numerous improvements made over the course of 5.4). WoD still has bugs in it that people have been reporting since the pre-patch, some of which Blizzard made official statements on, claiming to fix "within the next week" over a year ago. While a lot of content gets cut from every expansion, WoD takes the cake by far. I don't think any other expansion has ever been as lacking as this one. And a lot of the content that has been released is clearly unpolished, Shipyards have an abysmal tutorial, and Tanaan has more in common with Battlefield Barrens (which, it should be noted, was an experiment) than the TImeless Isle (which was generally very well received). And that's not even touching on the economy changes (passive play pays more than active play), the stat squish (which I consider to be this expansions' xrealms - an addition that did do some good, but ultimately was kind of pointless and ruined leveling to some degree), or other problems.

It's the best part of the cinematic
Here after war within trailer, needed to cleanse my eyes
Man, the detail in this is absolutely stunning. Almost makes you believe that the orcs are real and this is live action. The little things on Grommash and Garrosh, the hair, the cloth movement, the realistic muscle movement as Grom catches the axe, hell, even little drops of sweat tricling down Garrosh's brow from the heat. If the upcoming Warcraft movie doesn't pull off at LEAST this kind of quality for the orcs, I'll be very, very disappointed. Blizzard really sets the bar high with their cinematics.
ILM is working on the SFX for Warcraft, so we'll be in for a treat!
And the bar *just* as low with their games, lol; Diablo 3 was the original The War Z
yuptydoo Doesn't matter to me as long as that movie turns out right. I don't need the games to be good to enjoy the movie.
Dude, there's an upcoming Warcraft movie?? :O
Omar Mahmoud A live action one yeah
3:19-3:28 I don't know how many dollars were put into these 10 seconds in particular but they were worth every penny.
Garrosh in these 10 seconds is to this day the best and most realistic orc ever depicted.
We need to plead to the DK's to bring garrosh back to have the true horde
Garrosh did nothing wrong

Still true 2 years later.
@@lolilivesmatter5366 He cheated
Yea bro, he so veiny
Much effort has gone into just a couple of minutes but damn, these are some juicy couple of minutes.
fast forward 10 years..
3:20 - 3:28
This shot must have been very expensive. SO many details in his face

"And did you bring these... MONGRELS here... just to watch you DIE?"
I feel like this is a criminally under appreciated line
There's tons of people here saying the cinematic is great. Do we really need to go through every line and say if its good or not? That's some pretty stupid thinking.
It's a cool line, but the most underrated line from a Blizzard game, for me, still goes to Diablo from Diablo 2.
"Not even death can save you from me."

@@i93sme shadow lands isn't even out yet/isn't finished and bfa was wayyyy over hated. The wow community just likes to complain.
zain gelous it doesn’t matter if it is not out yet. Both have the same flaw as both have dummy conflict story, dummy antagonist, made up reasons, etc. I see that Blizzard lost somehow the ability to properly tell a story and make players part of it, and to make matters worse, it is also happening outside the MMORPG genre and even outside of gaming. Gul'dan, master of lies and manipulation chooses in that very moment out of all moments to be honest. Talk about a bad time to be honest for once. He would have been better off just lying and giving a more pleasant answer like saying "nothing Grom, its a gift," instead of saying "everything."
idiot moment +1 for Gul'dan right there.
Grommash was already well aware, so it wouldn't change much.
Yeah, that little chat was just a formality (or rule of cool). Gul'dan was probably already convinced that it's a done deal, and Grom was already planning on not doing it anyway.
Hurr Durr But Gul'dan doesn't know he knows that.
I disagree. I feel like Garrosh would have done it anyway, he'd be like

They are showing the villains. This is not our Horde. This is the enemy for both factions. Educate yourself good sir.
Pfft Alliance are boring.

Best cinematic of any expansion. Period.
I think Blizzard put more effort creating this awesome cinematic than developing the expansion itself XD
2:54 Every Reign of Chaos player are in love with this scene
They really did it well. The nostalgia playing the orc campaign and rewarded with the cinematic.
