After testing the new MacBook Air M1 (and walking away impressed), I wanted to test the new Apple MacBook Pro M1 and see how it compares. In addition to testing battery life, photo editing, video editing, etc. I'm also curious if the 16GB vs 8GBs of unified memory will make a difference in how the new M1 MacBook Pro performs.

7:00 Mics on the pro sound like they do a better job of canceling out ambient noise. The Air mics are much louder but don't "regulate" anything so your "p"s willing probably pop and anything going on in the background will pick up more.
Both webcams look like garbage.
I've watched a bunch of reviews trying to decide if I wanted to give the M1 a try (currently use a 16" MacBook Pro) as a toss in a backpack and go machine. This is by far the best real world review(s) that I've seen. Thank you for the videos!

As a Sound Engineer, the M1 Pro has WAYYY better microphones. I am shocked by the difference between the two. Obviously, I actually won't use them in the recording studio, but it does make my heart happy to know that, so thanks Apple

@@KLm912 Nah man, they're just louder. It's a well known psychological phenomenon that louder is automatically perceived as better by the brain cos all the frequencies are boosted equally

Probably the fan. Air doesn't have one so doesn't muffle the sound.
Super nice review and comparison between the Air and the pro. Increasing the Unified memory to 16gb is definitely the way to go.

7:01 from what I hear from this part of the video... MacBook Pro M1 - has very crisp audio and suppress background noise while the MacBook Air M1 - is picking up every noise in the background and amplifying to be louder and it sounds like your shouting even though you are not.

Could you compare the iPad Pro and MacBook m1 in a real world test?
The pro’s mic sounded muffled compared to the air. Didn’t really hear any difference with the speakers.
I have the M1 macbook pro now and I have to say 8gb seems to be pretty good because of the way apple utilizes swap memory. I would say don't pay extra unless you know you're going to use that extra memory. I don't video edit so I don't need it but I do have to write tons of research papers and I'm usually running a bunch of workspaces at once and for intense multitasking, 8gb seems to hold up. I also have desktop pc with i9 9900k, rtx 2070 super and 32 gbs of ram so I guess I don't really need all that power on the go

Sound is always subjective, but when listening to your video with studio grade headphones, I prefer the MacBook Air microphone and also speakers.
Hey! Nice comparison between this 2 amazing computers, but what you can tell about the pro and the razer book 13? As I saw on your video, it was good in video editing with that new Intel Xe graphics. Witch one of those two (razer book 13 and macbook pro 13 do you think is better (or will be better with future optimizations) for content creators? ;)

Curious about the 16GB Air
Thanks, I just got the Air 16 gigs ram 8/8 core and 1 TB SSD.... Will be way better than my midtier 2019 iMac that was actually slow as molasses with most of my videos footage...

@@sunitjoshi3573 Heh I've actually gotten one M1 pro 8gb ram, for game development( hyper casual ) and it is working great so far very happy :) By the time I'd need to buy another one it'll be M3 or 4 :) but so far so good :)
Is the 16gb ram worth it on the baseline air, upgrading from the 8gb/256gb 2019 intel MacBook Pro
The M1 got me to buy my first Mac - The MBA base model. For $949 (thanks Costco), this is a steal. You would be hard pressed to find a PC laptop with comparable performance unless you spent $500-700 more. When you talk about experience, the absolute silence of the MBA elevates the enjoyment. Now, I don't edit video so I didn't run into the same limitations you did. But if this isn't your workflow, the base MBA will satisfy 80% of us (if not more).

Hey man, love your content, but with the 4k 10 bit footage, at least with my PC's, I found that premiere sucks when you have it run at anything other than full Resolution. The computer has to interpret 1/8th of the 4k 10 bit and on premiere it freaks out. This is someone who has used a gh5 with 4k 10 bit footage for years.

Did you get the 7 core or 8 core gpu?
I got the 8 core gpu. Just came in today - a bit earlier than scheduled. The first thing I noticed was that plugged in or not doesn't seem to affect performance at all and the battery life ... so far its crazy good compared to my xps 13 which lasts a few hours under the best circumstances.
While I won't ever go back to an iPhone, their computers are definitely impressing me.

I would recommend Air with 16GB
I’d get the Air and do the thermal mod which is very simple to do and reversible.
16 GB RAM is a must imo
That is the first video where I could actually hear a clear difference between the Microphones of the 2. I still believe that the microphone on my new Air is great enough for my use, And I can buy a better external microphone than the one in the pro for that saving.

Did you noticed a big difference in display brightness between the Air and the 13 Pro?
Could you check the read/write speeds on the external drive plugged into the MacBook vs Razer Blade? IIRC I read something about the Thunderbolt implementation on the MacBooks being wonky due and needing a fix (maybe a firmware update). This might have affected your render times.
Also this is by far the best M1 review /comparison I've seen! 🔥
Not entirely sure how much this matters :/
With video editing having the files in prores makes all the difference because of the hardware media engines on the chip.
Im sad to see no further videos on the studio I bumped mine to 8tb ssd and 64gb of ram. Im surprised you have not done a follow up video.

Yep, selling my 2019 16” to a friend because I need portability again and unfortunately my old 13” died. I work docked at home anyways so I won’t notice a difference
when you showed webcam I've thought that youtube cut my quality from 4k to something like 720p, sadly it did not 😒
I have the Air and the Pro and am deciding which one to keep. I had them side by side the other night and the air mic and speakers are both louder than the pro. And I noticed a difference between keyboards too!! I like the Air keyboard better, but I do like the touch bar. And the Air is more comfy to type on.

@@freud4771 I am staying with the Macbook Air HOWEVER, I ordered the one with 16 GB RAM because I have nothing but problems with 8GB. The memory swap is huge...I am not even running any programs...just about 13+ chrome browser tabs open, and I had to shut down all other apps like Signal, messages, etc. because the machine was spiking for memory use and freezing. My 2012 MBP with 16GB Ram and SSD did better than this. Also, speakers and mic are a lot better than the pro to my ears and because I usually have it plugged into a monitor, the display didn''t make a difference, and I can take or leave the touchbar. Plus, Air is more comfy to type on for the times I do use as laptop.

ME: watching on my MacBook Pro.. I already like this machine. The amount of power you get out of it is crazy. If you pick up any I would say go with the air, but considering that fan in the Pro.

The Air's mic was louder but the Pro's sounded more natural.

While the speakers might not be as good as the Pro, they are easily the best on any laptop I've ever owned.

What’s crazy is I had a decent 2017 27 inch iMac the middle model with an external SSD and my base model M1 Mac mini smokes it it plays games better. City skylines and civilization play perfectly fine.

The Air charges at 45W when I hook it up to a 65W charger. But the included charger is only 31W.

I am selling my 2019 MacBook pro for the m1 MacBook air. Probably with smoke my old pro without the 16gb option but I might get the upgraded ram just in case
The Air Mic quality sounded a lot better, clearer and more crisp than the 13'' Pro.
P.S: I was watching the video on a 2015 MacBook Pro.

idk what was wring with your pro m1, but mine 16gb 512gb rendering 4k videos with no problem, 5min video in 2.44min in davinci resolve, never had problems for full resolution
pro's mic seems worse than air's ... is that correct?
