I love this video. I live on a 54 foot lot in a small city. I've incorporated 17 raised beds, a 20*18 garden, and a chicken coop with 8 chickens. I'm able to grow and can, freeze and dry enough food for a year supply and I've recently traded my garden plants and time teaching for a farm raised pig. Maybe I didn't raise it, but it was local and just as good. Im also a single mom who works full time. It's a lot of work to juggle but so worth it!

Out of all the zillions of homesteading videos out there right now about any topic one could think of, this video right here has been so needed. I can't be the only one who has watched so many videos thinking, "If only I had that huge farmhouse kitchen" or, " If only I could set our property up just like theirs" or, "If only I could stay home full time." Meanwhile, I'm completely forgetting about my true goals for this lifestyle and just HOW MUCH we're still able to accomplish. Thank you for the honesty and true encouragement!

Yes!! Its how it should be. Everyone should have at least an acre or two to grow and raise food. Now the Government even regulates collecting rain water. This money based world is not how it should be. We should go back to trading, bartering and growing food for our families.

Same here. We are debt free and work for all that we have. Currently living in a rented '70s single wide trailer on 5 acres. I have a fantastic garden in a clearing in the woods, chickens, rabbits and I'm getting pigs and goats this year finally. I built a she-shack out by the garden and it's my favorite place to relax. Hoping to buy the property next year.

@@MelissaKNorris The only thing I disagree with - that you do not own the land. I think if you make improvements to the soil it takes a while until you see the results and if you do not own the place it can be taken from you. Or if you are not allowed to plant errect fences as you would like to.
On the other hand if the land is not ideal - you are not stuck with it when something betters comes your way. So maybe getting your feet wet, get some first experiences (what you would like to have), and then get your own place. If need be living in a camper for a while, or a container.

The thrill of raising something that wasn't from the "store" is still new to me. I realize that homesteading NOW is not an option for us but a small garden? Yes, that is doable. Looking back, I realize that I ALWAYS have had what I needed for a particular time in my life. Being content and comfortable with who you are and what you have is a gift from God. Continue to count your blessings and share those blessings with others. Can't wait to watch the next video and go back and slowly watch all of your other videos.

We are not homesteaders we have a garden can preserve foods dehydrate our spices etc. we just bought a green house to do more in and through the fall and winter drilling my own well this year for food water for our garden foods on .65 acre only. Our goal is to get chickens soon but we have only supplemented our vegetables last year with only $60 While it’s not a huge deal...it is to us. Thank you for this Melissa! We live in a manufactured home too. I have an aunt that loves to down talk us for living in one. It works for us and helped us be mortgage free sooner. Also on the semi container, I feel it’s a smart solution. Yes, we have one too. Many years ago a garage was going to cost us $10,000, the container only $2,000. When we had a remodeling job, it was so nice to have it and now helps with storage. I think debt free is the way to go.

    • @xyzsame4081
      @xyzsame4081 3 ปีที่แล้ว

hi, Natasha, if I were you I would call her out very directly: Why are you _down talking us_ for living in a modest home ? Are you such a materialistic person ? - I would not give her any arguments why that is a prudent choice or discuss any of her "rationals". This is not about "reasons" it is a relationship dynamic, she would like to establish - and you are down on the ladder compared to her in "value".
Or she would bother to be polite and at least kee her thoughts to herself.
People like her need to be called out on _the impoliteness_ - on being mean / thoughtless / someone that thrives on comparing herself favorably over material possessions
O.K. you will not call her a materialistic person that has not grown out of the mean girl phase of highschool. But I think it could not hurt to use the word impolite. She will huff and puff - and then shut up.
It sure sounds like meant not just rude. If she "loves" to put you down it was not just one offhand, thoughtless remark.
Unless she has a fortune to pass on, that you _might_ give her a pass ;)

I've been following you for many months; this is your best video I have seen, as it gets to the heart of homesteading. We bought an old homestead that was built in 1802; we are still using much of the old infrastructure that was created centuries ago. The old springhouse still produces the sweetest water I have ever tasted, the old Concord grape arbors still produce wonderful grapes that are hardy and delicious. 100+ year old apple trees are still producing ugly but delicious apples. I wish I could talk to some of the old homesteaders to learn more of their secrets. I love this lifestyle!

We homestead on 15 Acres 3,000 miles away, and we too live in a doublewide... I pay no attention to anyone who thinks this is a problem. Like you we both work full time, and yes it's hard. But like you we are debt free as well... while all the people in the fancy homes still have mortgages, we have freedom to some extent. Been homesteading for 30 years... last year we finally built a shop, when we finally had the money to pay cash for it. We are probably 10 years older than you guys... so all I can say is just keep doing the things. I always enjoy your videos when I watch them. Most of the time I'm pretty tired from working well into the evening. @@sandrabulluck1896 I live in a new housing development. What they do in these new developments is dig water reservoirs so people can have little “lake views” in their backyards. They use all that soil they dig and dump it next to the reservoir for the foundation of the houses. When doing this it causes really high amounts of phosphorus in the soil and the good microbiome can’t flourish and as a result, the bad funguses thrive. It takes many years for the soil to balance back out again. The HOA’S landscaping company sprays tons of chemicals in our yards trying to keep the fungus and diseases under control. If they miss spraying anywhere, you can tell because fungus will overtake a tree or plant quickly.
Man needs to stop trying to invade nature, it only causes problems, never resolves. 😔
I live next to power lines, a huge satellite dish, a water plant and they’re constantly burning fires to clear land to erect more of these neighborhoods. I’ve got to get out of here!

Sometimes I don't get why I do this! Then when the fresh asparagus we have nurtured for 3 years is on the table. The home raised pork is on the grill or the raw honey is on the biscuits. I know exactly why. Have enjoyed and learned from your videos, thanks.

Stumbled on your video by chance, and I couldn't Agree More with what you said.
I live in a small city in the PNW, and I had plans to acquire more acreage..which unfortunately fell through. But, I have learned over the last couple of years that I Can and Do make it work only on a tenth of an acre. Don't have enough room for pigs or any large animals, but I do have honeybees and chickens. In the near future I will be installing a pond (aquaponics) with local fish.
Until I get very lucky and win the lottery...I'll make a stand here.

I appreciate your videos , I have learned a lot from you and I thank you. I've got 3 acre's and a livestock barn ,10 chickens. Thinking about getting pigs . One of my boys live with me which is a good thing cause I'm in a wheelchair. We grow a good garden I can and freeze band enjoy the garden very much. Thanks again for your channel and God speed

I'm 62 and disabled but mobile. I just bought 2.5 acres in NC with a tiny single wide mobile home. It needed some repair, sub floor repair and buttoning it up, sealing bad spots, etc and I have to put a new roof on. Not much, if any, money left after, but this is better than the mortgage I was paying each month that used 90% of my social security check with sometimes, not even enough left for utilities! I struggled for the last 10 years! And basically had no life, just a roof. Now I can live free of a mortgage or rent. I had just enough proceeds after paying off the mortgage when I sold, to buy this! I want to have some raised garden beds (waist high) because I have a bad back and 2 knees that I was supposed to have replaced (but thats not happening anytime soon!) I want to have a small chicken coop/run, with maybe 6 hens to start. I would love to eventually be able to can and preserve whatever I grow, its only for me alone! Any tips, ideas, any help at all is very much appreciated!!! Thank you!

I like the emphasis on being debt free. For us it has been a saving grace as we don’t overextend and get into trouble. It helps us to not outgrow our skill level.

That is awesome and it cant hurt to do the auto feeders and waterers when you have day jobs too, not just vacation. Time savers are awesome. Also a lot of the perfectionism isnt set by someone else its the person's view of what they are seeing someone else that "keeping up with the Jones" mentality. The Jones are too busy doing there own thing to worry about what you are doing. So these pressures people put on themselves is more the trap of their own mind not something someone is doing to them. I think a lot of that comes from being so use to the rat race. Its a way of thinking that needs to go if you are to be free to do your own thing.

I think some of this is really location dependent. In Maine, livestock need some form of a shelter. The cold, rain and snow in the winter time will kill them if they don't have some means of escape from the elements.

Thats a fab video thank you. I will admit to land envy when I watch yours and other videos but I've decided for us to be mostly self sufficient in something rather than everything. In my case its potatoes for about 6 - 9 months of the year although that will involve some chipping part boiling and freezing for them to keep long enough and buying a few once the normal storage time has finished around January. I can't have any livestock as we live in an estate and I'm extremely allergic to animal fur and feathers but thats fine. We have a small garden and last year managed to grow enough potatoes to last from mid August to the end of January and be self sufficient in salad through the summer. We intend to improve on that but it may not all get done this year as we have to put in raised beds so that I can garden due to my health. We were overrun with weeds last year as I couldn't get down to the ground to weed. Thanks again I love watching your videos and have learnt lots from you and others TH-cam videos.

We live in an apartment. We have rabbits for meat when they birth. And grow food on our terrace and balcony. We also have a community garden plot. We have friends who will water the plants at home while we are away. The plot will be watered by a friend on the plot. And the rabbits will be at a friend's until we are back. It's definitely about thinking out loud. :) people don't get us. Haha

Thank you so much for sharing this! I would love to know more about how to find land to lease, etc. I know that through the Farm Bureau and other organizations there are people who are looking for tenants to farm their property, but my knowledge is very limited. Also, more detail on sheltering the animals, especially in extreme weather. Thanks again!
