    Episode 534 Autorestomod
    We cheated and went to a local lighting shop. You might should too, unless you are building a 30x36 shop with 12 foot walls and 14 foot rafter height.

    When I first got my shop, it only had (2) 60W incandescent bulbs to light it…
    I swapped those out for (2) 4’ T8 shop fixtures the day I moved in, and also added one over my workbench….
    6 months later I had to add 2 more fixtures because it wasn’t bright enough...
    2 years later I added 2 more fixtures because it STILL wasn’t bright enough, and then I added another over my tool area…
    Now I’m feeling like I need to add about 4 more. I swear… the older you get; the more light you seem to need hahahah

      I like a lot of light then LOL. We experimented with cheap lights in Studio A and found them wanting. 24x24 building with 10 foot ceilings and 4 of the cheap 8 foot lights isn't enough.

    Your shop is looking great. I looked at using Sheetrock in my shop but felt the OSB was more durable and I could hang anything any where on the wall without a problem. The one thing I did was paint the OSN to give it a better look. I didn’t like the plain OSB look. I also figured it cost less and was faster to get done. This is just what I did and you will have a great looking shop with Sheetrock. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

      I have white painted OSB on my shop walls and ceiling and I couldn’t agree more. It is durable, easy to mount things and cheaper than finished drywall.

      We had OSB in our old shop and it was cool to be able to mount anything anywhere. Studio B will be a multi use area (green screen corner etc) so we aren't going to go with the OSB. Our goal is to open up the studio for local TH-camrs that do what we call "talking head" videos that we shoot edit and produce for them.

    Great info. When I built my shop a dozen years ago, I installed 8-foot fluorescent fixtures. LEDs were still rather expensive and somewhat unproven back then, so while it seemed like the logical choice, I've come to regret it. Light output is adequate when they all work, but that's rare. There's always a bulb or starter or ballast on the fritz, and with 12-foot ceilings, maintenance is a chore. I'm currently in the process of replacing them with LED fixtures, which I wish I'd done to begin with. It's been a learning process, but you've neatly summarized much of what I had to pick up the hard way in one nine minute video. I'm sure its a topic that'll prove useful to a lot of people.

    The right amount of light is always "as much light as you can possibly have" in my experience. Can always turn off the extra, but sure is a pain in the ass to supplement with trouble lights. Those end up being a point source of light too close to the thing you are trying to illuminate which magically creates dark via shadows. Light coloured walls an ceiling are vitally important. I'm actually debating painting the floor of my shop white because after experiencing it in another shop, it is amazing how much of a difference it makes working under a vehicle. Side lighting too dramatically reduces shadows and fills out the space. Personally, I prefer majority of daylight full spectrum bulbs with a few warm mixed into the fixtures for balance. True full spectrum lighting is 2 to 3 times the cost of "cool white" though. Another thing I did is install two "sun tube" skylights. Not enough to light the shop however introducing diffuse natural light really helps.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We went with a medium gray on the walls. And the floor is a nice light gray. I like the light we have. near zero shadow.

    I have a 2 stall garage that I run 4 metal hylide street lights mounted to my rafters and protrude through my ceiling. Bright is right when it comes to a work shop. I worked as an industrial maintenance tech for a few years and our shop was like a dungeon and you couldn’t see anything in your shadow. It was 45’x65’ and had 10 fluorescent fixtures, high ceilings and brown and dark gray walls. After years of working in that I painted the osb on my walls white, ceiling white and put in my lights. At night when I open my overheads my shop looks like a airplane hanger. If low bay LED lights ever become affordable to replace the amount of light I have now I’ll upgrade for energy savings

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. We are going with a medium gray wall as it works better for film. But white is a great choice for reflectivity.

    Love it! I messaged you years ago about doing a bit on lighting cause I was about to do mine. Then I moved, & moved again, then Covid & life. I'm about to start on it now, so Perfect Timing!! Lifes funny sometimes. The local lighting provider is really a good idea, I always want to do learn everything I can about a subject, but some it's just too confusing, Lumens, Lux, foot-candles, K, CRI, blah blah blah. Why reinvent the wheel, time to call the lighting provider. Love the show!

    • @tritter82008
      @tritter82008 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a former design engineer for a lighting company, and it's suprising how something as seemingly simple as light can be an extremely confusing subject for the uninitiated (so many different terms!). You touch on a lot of good points here. One of the main ones being that foot-candles (and it's metric/SI equivalent "lux") is the number one thing to consider when setting up "task lighting." It's a measure of how much light you have on the surface you're working on (where it's useful to you), as opposed to lumens, which is more of a measure of how much total light a fixture produces. The reason lumens is used in marketing instead of foot-candles: foot-candles is specific to your application (ceiling height, work surface height, etc.). You alluded to this in the list of info you gave your lighting provider, which is used in the calculations. Color temperatures are more a matter of preference, but what you said about 3000K being "warmer" and easier on the eyes vs. 5000K (or higher) being rather harsh and bad for filming is generally true. I prefer 4000K myself for general lighting. Beyond that, you can get into CRI, which is a measure of a light source's tendency to distort or misrepresent an object's perceived color compared to natural sunlight. Essentially, the higher the CRI, the closer the object's color under the artificial light will be to its color in natural sunlight. You also alluded to this when you mentioned having to adjust the camera settings so the colors "look right." Great video!
