  • **Update: Polaroid Originals is now just called 'Polaroid' these days. You can pick up fresh film directly from Polaroid's website.
Polaroid cameras are powered by their cartridges, and this video shows you how to salvage a cartridge with a dead battery by transferring the film.

What's interesting is that I have an old Polaroid 600 with an empty film cartridge in it from the early 2000s and its battery still somehow works to this day.

Pretty good tutorial, man! There is also a way for knowing if the first picture is well put inside the cartrigde in complete darkness. Try to close the external plastic lip (not the mylar thin strip) against the oberture, if it's completely flat along the line of the cartrigde, it's completely inside and the border is not outside. I use a dark bag and complete darkness room.
I usually refill i-Type film inside 14 or 15 battery powered cartrigdes for my folding SX-70 Alpha 1 Model 2 and my Supercolor 1000 (vintage Onestep). If it's the case too, REMEMBER TO PUT THE ND FILTER before putting in the camera, getting it out it's possible but annoying. It happened to me xDDD
BTW, if the dark slide is not correctly inside, it will not be ejected by the camera...it happened to me also.

When testing Polaroid cameras with an empty cartridge it's a good idea to put a few already exposed images in there just to make sure the camera pushes the film out properly. Sometimes the pick arm needs a little adjustment. Also if you put a film pack it in the camera doesn't do anything check the battery contacts. On rare occasions they sometimes move out of place.

Many of the color 600 films sold as 'new' in places like Amazon are actually expired and give no pictures - just read the 1 star reviews. The black & white films appear to be better.
May want to use i-type film to put inside a 600 type cartridge. From what I read on forums, this film transfer is actually very difficult to do in the dark - so think twice. People say it's better to insert no more than 4 photos instead of 8 and insert the cartridge inside the camera while still inside the dark room. Absolutely not any trace of light in the room. For the battery, measure with a voltmeter: if it's close to 5.8V better discard it. If it's around 6.0V it should be safe to take a couple of pictures

be warned I recently did this and it was so stressful because I didn't want the film to be ruined, and not being able to see anything makes it even worse. like he says in the video practice with developed film again and again, and then again with your eyes closed to be sure you got this down.

Hi, I have my spirit 600 Polaroid, I guess it’s from the 70s but I’m not really sure. I found it last year and the flash always worked, it always had the green light when I opened it. Today I tried using it again after a few months, but it had a red light. I tried taking a photo and at first the flash wasn’t working, so I took the thingy out put it back and the flash works but I couldn’t take photos, so I repeated the process and then no light appeared, neither red or green, same situation for the flash. What can I do? In the past when I tried taking photos even without the film it has always worked:(
