I've been watching it since it 's been on Netflix! It's truly an amazing piece of work, they all deserve awards.
The point of LB’s lie to his daughter was not that he was a narcissist - quite the opposite. The scene was complex but it was not Leonard’s narcissism - the drive there was to protect his daughter and honor his wife’s wishes.
@meveevem1001 I agree. I saw the interview Bradley Cooper did with the three Bernstein siblings on CBS Sunday Morning, and they spoke about this incident. I think Jennifer Garner may have mistakenly chosen this word to describe that scene. She was so excited at the start of the interview, and I kept hoping that she would relax, calm herself and get to the task of actually moderating an intelligent discussion with the actors and their film. I was glad to see that she did a relatively good job of moderating the discussion and allowing the actors to express their own thoughts and insights about the film they worked so hard to bring to fruition.
But the feeling of him not being a narcissist isn't meant to be felt until after Maya responds. Because it's what she needed to hear. Because then we know the lie doesn't matter. That what matters is the fact he's lying to protect her. Even though it breaks his heart to have to not be himself.
He is a narcissist for putting his family through everything he did instead of being himself openly and doing what's healthiest. That's the point. The point is the the most narcissistic thing he says in the movie, aka everyone is jealous of me, is in fact the one thing that isn't. His ego is his biggest flaw. And yet he is so brilliant he can't escape it. Tragic. Beautiful scene.
I watched Maestro tonight and it was WONDERFUL! BC was exuberant in his role, the energy was palpable. That silent walk between Bradley and Matt was fantastic, and the embrace where Matt took Brad’s head in his hands… the looks exchanged were, “you know we can never be together, right? We are not doing what we may WANT to do, but it’s what we HAVE to do.” I’m a gay man and had that moment with a straight friend… we were soulmates but ours was a love that simply couldn’t be our happy fate. I *knew* the look, and it broke my heart. 😢

I wanted to like this movie so much. I watched it the second it was available on Netflix. The task of putting it together was astounding. And Bradley Cooper has grown so much from his Alias days with Jennifer Garner. I want more people to see Mestro so I can read their comments. I'm gonna watch it again over the Holiday break. I guess I didn't know much or enough about Leonard Bernstein. Carey, as Lenny's wife, warning him not to become an old Queen while Snoopy is bobbing outside their Manhattan window in the Macy's Day parade is a scene I'll never forget.Carey should be nominated for an Academy Award for her work on this.
Harold Schoenberg wrote some great books - probably at your library...Lives of the Great Conducters; Lives of the Great Pianists;...good biographical sketches of LB in his books. And there's a great documentary on the making of West Side Story......
The story Cooper tells about what he was *really* thinking in the scene where Lenny lies to his daughter is hilarious. Watching it I thought, “He can’t go through with the lie. He’s gonna tell the truth.” I wanted that so badly!
Same with me. His face, eyes made me think…he’s going to tell her the truth…wow…excellent acting when the audience can read your mind. Then we find out that is exactly what he was thinking! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The film is incredible! Grabbed me from the beginning. The style and pacing, the acting is superb. It deserves an Oscar sweep. I'm so proud of you Bradley! Full disclosure.I wanted to love it. I did. I've been a fan of Bradley and his work ethic. His seriousness and reverence for this medium. But I was also turned off by the pedigree of producers and clear Oscar push. Most of the bad reviews I think had a similar visceral response to the press push. In this case the film lived up to the hype. It lived up to the obnoxious pedigree and the incessant press junkets. Yes, they got out there and SOLD this film. I'm glad they did. It's so well done. It's very sophisticated. The acting is stunning. I beg people, please don't hate it automatically because of the buzz around it. Because of the pedigree involved and the lofty praise. Give it a chance. Let it affect you. Its accolades are actually well deserved. There's a reason Spielberg let Bradley do this film and why he's connected to elite filmmakers. He's worked very hard for it. They all did. This film is the real deal. It also doesn't follow the predictable beats of normal biopics. The chemistry between the characters is compelling and organic. You can tell they worked SO DAMN HARD. The honesty is unreal. Congrats Bradley!
You all were fantastis in this movie. I left drained and could not shake it when I left. Evreyone in the theatre just sat when it was over and could not move. I cried and I have't cried since 1985. Carey was superb. The acting was so incredible. I was DRAINED.
After having wept for several minutes following my view of the film Maestro ... and having recuperated my equilibrium nee breath ... I can honestly say this was not acting, this was beyond a tour de force (directorial) performance. Bernstein was revived through Bradley and the mysterious creative muses are fully alive. Astonishing.

Yup, Bradley is a legendary “composer AND conductor.” He won’t be able to deflect criticism in one of those areas by saying he is really the other.
I think Jennifer Garner is playing Natalie Portman playing Elizabeth Bary from May December on another acting job as Bradley Coopers old friend and Netflix interviewer but she still has a lot more of Gracie in her subconscious than she realized before she took the job.

the acting is phenomenal, the movie is amazing,but….. please stop saying that this is a love story….this isn’t about love, it is about a woman who couldn’t let go, and a man, a genius who was self consumed and somewhat abusive . Love is a verb, not just an emotion. If this was a story of “ a regular guy who marries and can’t control his impulse of who he really is , but couldn’t let go of a lifestyle that gave him stability and a sense of acceptance we wouldn’t call his behavior loving. This is elitist, and Hollywood is selling a narrative of what love is, because this man was a genius , and lived above the normal rules of love and respect.
The Acting in the Film is very good. I do think Jennifer Garner is too much of a FANGIRL to be the moderator of this Q&A. No disrespect to Ms. Garner, to be clear .....
Why is she so nervous?
I have the impression Hollywood always does the same movie. Maestro is "The Star is Born". Bernstein is The great maestro of USA, and there is almost no music in the movie, but the Mahler scene. They focused on the gender question, ok, but music was the main presence in Bernstein's life.
Music is set aside for social drama, and stuffed every possible clichee to embrace audience from all walks of life for box office. Wouldn't it be great to see a short scene from Bernstein's signature musical THE WEST SIDE STORY
If you think the movie was focused on the gender issue then you have not really understood this movie. The whole movie is, and I quote Spielberg, “an anatomy of a marriage”. It is the story of Lenny and Felicia and it most certainly isn’t a straightforward biopic. That was the initial plan of Scorsese who then passed it on to Spielberg who then gave to Cooper to do whatever he wanted. And Cooper clearly understood that a biopic wasn’t going to be interesting for a man who is probably the most filmed classical musician ever.
JG should not do this ever again. She is not good at it.

They first met over 20 years ago while filming the tv series, Alias. I was glad to see Jennifer calm her fangirling long enough to ask questions that allowed the actors to talk about the filming process and directing choices, as well as to promote the film to the public. I realize not everyone is a fan of Jennifer, but I have always loved the happiness and kindness she exudes. Everyone could benefit from a little happiness and kindness in their lives. Happy Holidays!

I saw it last night and I am thrilled to find more information on the background of it. I called friends today and told them it is the best movie I have seen in a few years (I have not seen Barbie yet and not sure why). I left saying “these are Oscar winning performances”. I think he is a master of his craft and is thrilled with the end product and SO WAS I!!
True HOWEVER, that's what it takes! Jamie Lee Curtis campaigned hard too, showed she REALLY wanted it, and voilà!! In life, in general, you have to go for what you want AND show people you want it!!! That said, I think he'll get nominated but he's up against too many huge movies this year to actually get it... though... the Oscars always have some big surprises too!!🤷🏻♀

Jennifer Garner was right. Her own words here, "why am I doing this?". She should not have been doing this interview, what an embarrassment. Extremely hyper, immature behavior, foul mouthed. The F word several times, the S word, the D word, she called Carey Mulligan a 'dude', She basically ruined this entire interview; interrupting them when they were talking, especially Bradley and Carey, like it's all about HER, how rude.
Yes I'm sure she's a nice person, but her behavior here was very unprofessional. I felt sorry for the cast having to put up with her. I wish this could be redone with a more sane, professional interviewer who has the decency to not use foul language and behave like a hyper 13 year old whose had too many cups of caffeinated coffee.
The cast is tolerant of her, had no choice, they looked embarrassed at times for her. Who hired her to do this? And I'll call out Bradley too for his use of the F word here, stop it. The making of this film and what Bradley accomplished and how, was glorifying. I watched an interview with him and producer of it Steven Spielberg and that was a great interview. Watch it.

I find the bumbling bubblegum facade of Jennifer Garner totally inappropriate to discuss this movie. I tried to get through it but have had to pause it for headache breaks. She's unbearably insensitive and disrespectful to Carey Mulligan, whose performance in this film is nothing short of spectacular. I have to stop now at 28:13 after Garner literally tells Carey Mulligan she's "not special." She forgot to step out of her 13-year old body for this one. Yikes.

while I do think that Maestro was poorly advertised in the sense that it doesn't really focus on the man's achievements, I still thought the exploration of their relationship made for a great movie.
@@pedrosantos929 I've seen a handful of interviews Bradley Cooper has given about this film. He explained that he purposely did not want to make a documentary of Leonard Bernstein's life. Instead, he was interested in exploring the love story of his marriage to an extraordinary woman. The fact that he identified as bi-sexual took a backseat to the devotion he felt for his wife and children. I think Bradley Cooper's passion and excitement for this project does more to promote the film than any conventional advertising ever could. If the film receives critical success, award nominations and/or audience buzz, the film could benefit immensely.
