My sister and I were at one of these tapings and it was in Dec since there were Christmas trees up all over the hotel. I wish you had the shows from that week because we were shown several times in the audience.Chuck and Bob kept "flirting" with us since we were in the front row.. My brother took a picture of it on TV. I stayed after the show and saw Phyllis Diller leave in her limo, Artie Johnson went to the bar and sat to have a drink! Jay Johnson & Bob gave me their autograph! I was 17 and remember Paul Lynde died shortly after. Actually, just looked that up and it was Jan of 1982.

Other things to know about Vegas Squares:
    1. No money per game, each game was worth a prize.
    2. No Secret Square. At all.
    3. The reason: The winners of each show advanced in a playoff, where the winner (on the final episode) won $100,000.

If anyone has the final episode, please post it. I read that George Gobel was the center square in the final show with Paul Lynde making a walk-on apperance (he got fired before the series ended).

My guess on why they moved to the Riviera, aside from NBC evicting them from network's Burbank Studios due to the daytime show's cancellation, was maybe that since Peter performed a lot in Vegas when he wasn't taping the "Squares". And remember "Let's Make a Deal" moved their production to the Las Vegas Hilton after ABC evicted Monty and company.

Moving "Hollywood Squares" to Las Vegas was one of the dumbest moves in the history of television game shows. I can understand moving "Gambit" to Vegas, due to its blackjack theme, but this show is called HOLLYWOOD Squares. I also read that there were numerous problems there, which included having to tear down and rebuild the set for each tape day...not to mention everyone gambling so much.

With this having taped in Dec. 1980, and "Flamingo Road" premiering in January '81, I now wonder whether it was supposed to premiere in fall-1980, but got pushed back due to the Writer's Strike? There was also a pilot movie earlier in 1980...

Peter Marshall said in his book that he and Jerome Shaw were not happy during that season in Vegas. He felt that in the long run, they should have ended Squares with the last NBC show.

Plus they also appeared a lot at Disneyland.

Yes. In fact, "Dealer's Choice" was initially taped at the Tropicana Hotel (the one surviving Jack Clark episode bears this out) before they moved production to Burbank. And even more game shows with Vegas connections include "Caesar's Challenge" (taped at Caesar's Palace, naturally). And i also remember a milestone episode of "The Price is Right" was taped in Vegas (but at which hotel, I'm not sure).

That Price Is Right 30th Anniversary Special was done at the Rio in Las Vegas in 2002.

Thank you. I remember watching the episode, but forgot what milestone, what year, and what hotel/casino (although I kind of thought it was an episode milestone; for instance the 5000th episode).

    NO SECRET SQUARE GAME!!

Wondering if any of the tapings have been found from the Vegas run. I was a contestant during the Vegas shoot and won one of the 3 games but missed the show on TV...can't remember why. I have searched for it for years and hoping someone here taped all those. Thanks!

Actually I remember that each win was worth a prize package. And if the last game was unfinished, whoever had the most X's or O's won the last package (sort of like on the 1968 Saturday morning "Storybook Squares"). And was unaware of the playoff.
