Netflix ruined this show with their shit writing and overblown production budgets. The low budget filming from Showcase and the writing of Mike Clattenburgh and others are what made the show great. Netflix tried to revive it for Americans and just wound up destroying it.
Yeah. Honestly I don't mind some of the newer seasons. Some are legit good and still have a little bit of that charm left. But nothing tops the early seasons.
the Netflix years were a totally NS produced show though. Netflix had no say in any creative decisions or provided any production resources. They just paid the boys to stream the finished product and to put Netflix Original on it, sometimes with a pending deal and sometimes not. In fact the boys filmed season 8 in the summer of 2013 and were in the middle of preproduction for 9 when they made the deal for seasons 8 and 9 in March of 2014.
yes, without Clattenburg they failed. But the boys were the original writers too though and Ricky and Julian co-creators with Clattenburg and Ray (Ricky and Julian just weren't the producers of the original series as Ray came up with the idea for the show after he saw the 99 movie). As Ricky and Julian helped write every single episode other than the 1 hour Original Series Finale. Bubbles helping on 4, 5, 6. And 8-12. But in this particular instance I think it is more like them losing focus without Clattenburg than drive and passion (as Robb and JP were not professionals like him when they started, just his friends). As they are hardest working people in show business in my opinion. The reason I say this is how hard they work all year round on every stage of production. It's insane (even before 2013, all 26 years accounted for with the writing and/or acting). I would follow along very closely on Swearnet for the last 10 years and add up the pieces. For the last 10 years they typically write from Jan-March (and non-stop for the last 5 years, so get ready for 2 movies, Season 2 Jail, and a new park Season and Season 3 Animated being made this year and next). Then they do pre-production themselves as they are the producers. Typically from April-June (as Netflix never provided any production resources nor had any input creatively or production wise, they just streamed the finished product sometimes with a pending deal, sometimes not). In the summer they film (typically July and a little into August, but sometimes both months like Season 8). In the past they then would go on tour for 2 weeks in September and then get back and start on overseeing post production in October, November and then go on tour again in Dec (post is happening without them too but they are usually in the edit room saying what they want, you can see this a little bit on Swearnet too). Not to even mention them running the building, employees, and merch and content of Swearnet and all the businesses they own together in Halifax like multiple bars, and the side in conjunction with type businesses like weed companies, beer and whiskey (though I doubt they do too much work for those).
I love that I live in the same province as this show was filmed, it’s like bragging rights except nobody gives a shit until I tell them I met them twice and almost got my ice cream bike on the show lol
