Matthew, if you build a shelf to sit on the first support, it works well. 25 years ago, when my family and I live in Germany, sleds like this were a dime a dozen at the flea markets, and we added shelves to make them display pieces. Just a suggestion.
Mathew another great build. I live in southern Texas so a sled will only be a decoration here but it might just sell. Thanks a lot love what you do. I’m on the list as well!

I think this would be neat as your own Christmas decoration by the tree, stacked with presents! Or maybe a smaller version using it in the center of your holiday dining table with either a nice horizontal floral arrangement or even holding the platter of turkey!
This is awesome! I have been thinking about building a sled, we have an old metal and wood one hanging in the barn but I love this build you did and will use your idea.
Great video and love watching them, have workshop envy , but wood is more a thing in the USA than UK. Did see one weak point in the sledge and that was the curved nose piece as forward motion and impact is with the grain, hence easy to snap the curve off.
I bought the plans for this today, and I have to say... they are really well done! I do have a question. Early in the video you mention that you can get three of these out of two 2x12s. Do you have a cut list/order for accomplishing that? Thanks for the great videos!
I agree - you’ll need 6 runners at 3 feet each - with an 8 foot board that’s no more than 4 runners - you could do a work around and make one sled a little shorter I guess - and not sure what wood is left for parts and if there would be enough- now if these were 2x12x10 instead of 8 feet it would be easy - but not sure of the math with 2 eight foot boards - maybe it’s just me - don’t actually have everything in front of me to play around with it, so I could be missing something
Another amazing project as always from you sir. Can’t wait to make one for myself and some family members. Good luck on your online school journey as well.
Great looking project. I have been thinking about making a few sleds. I am brand new to this and have some items for sale on Facebook Market place. Going to give it a try. I am retired and I just want to build some projects. It is not all about the money for me. I just want to see where I can go with it. Looking forward to checking out your course. Thanks for the plans to build this project and your weekly show.
I found the Pottery Barn piece called “Found Wooden Sled” for $249. It has some cool metal decorations, like metal along at the bottom of the rails. It’s not really necessary for decoration, but you could add it if you’re making it for yourself. I also think Matthew should go all out with a more upscale version, like what you would see on The New Yankee Workshop. He could add dados for the supports, smooth the corners with a router, and so on. Norm Abram is the king of woodworking, and his level of detail is at the expert level. If you’re starting this online course, it’s okay to start with the basic entry-level projects, but I would also like to see some videos that go beyond these craft-booth projects and show us where the course is headed.
I went to Lowe’s yesterday and at this store I picked up a bunch of 8’ picket\privacy fence boards for 2.02 bucks per. This was the treated style but it was 10 cents higher similar 6ish foot style. Just fyi. We are in the season to buy outdoor stuff at the cheap possibly.
One of my favorite builds. I've thought about decor sleds but this is a good design. Any concern about the curved front breaking along the grain? Well done Matthew.
I am in the process of rebuilding my table saw. Had trouble ripping a two by eight even after changing blade for brand new blade. So I flipped the saw over and the pulleys are loose as all get out. Had to change them out and all that crap and it’s turned into a nightmare. Got it on the run now. Will have it ready next week.
While I follow you and build a lot of your projects and earn quite a bit, I don't live in the same market as you do. Some things sell, some dont. Not a criticism, just an observation. I plan to get your course when it drops
I agree Ive had good luck with the multitiered planters and the sectional bench planters. Built the purple martin houses but only sold a couple. I think they are nice so idk why they don’t sell. Only priced them at 110$ which is fair. They’re a lot of work. Great site though plans are spot on and easy to follow. Keep posting thanks.

Great build. The only potential issue is the wood grain around the curve of the runners. Any bump and they could split. Any thoughts on how to avoid that?
Hmm. If it sits on the floor, if there are 2, 3, 4 year olds around I can imagine them sitting on it. Do you think it’s strong enough? If not I can see bracing the runner support attachments. Thanks for the ideas!
Matthew, question on the first 3 marks you made for the sled runner. You said mark 3” then mark 5” but then you next said transfer our 5 1/4” mark. So was that a correction, a mistake or a new mark?
Wonderful project...Thank you. I have purchased your plans in the past, and have been very pleased. Just purchased this one, however, and not so much. Why didn't you put a cross bar at the top of the sled for steering? I know it's just decorative but wouldn't it look more realistic with the cross bar?

I got 2 sleds out of 1 2x12..just have to lay out rails on 3 foot board like you do on 5 foot board. Your rails will be 1 inch shorter then cut seat braces 6 inches..little waste left over
@ if you follow the video the off cut broad you can make center table top versin it would be 1/12 of the big one . Duh! Mathematician one broad. Make two product increases your profit!
Probably if it's handled roughly. Since it's strictly a decoration piece, it should hold up ok. If you want a "REAL" sled you'll have to build it differently, using different techniques.

Which angle is the correct angle?
@@davelarkin1604 I believe it is the 20 degree angle because the saw angle when cutting was not quite half of what a 45 degree angle would make.
