    Not knowing where you live, maybe your codes are different. But the open space between either vertical or horizontal balusters/pickets/cables should be a maximum of 4". In fact, a building inspector will sometimes carry a 4" diameter ball with him and use it to check the spacing. If the ball goes through the space, you fail the inspection. Otherwise, it looks good.

    • @wyojess
      @wyojess ปีที่แล้ว

      In my area code for cable railing spacing is 3", deflection in the cables is the reason given,

  • @rickwashek478
    @rickwashek478 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Awesome Clint. The only thing I would do do different is I would notch out the stair tread instead of cutting around it. Then cut the post so it sets about 1/4" on tread. It will then cover up you tread cut.

    • @ToolReviewZone
      @ToolReviewZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can definitely do that to Rick. My problem is, I like to measure once and cut 3 times, so I figured it would be easier to just cut a new post 🤣🤣👊

    I wouldn't DIY stainless cable. If you want a low profile, horizontal metal look - do stainless tubes. You can get them in 1/2" diameter. They're extremely easy to cut and work with. They're far cheaper than SS cable. And you can get tube painted or powder coated in a variety of colors. Easy install, drill the newels and glue the tubes right into the end newels or walls, and balusters for intermediate support.
    To get the cables tight enough to avoid deflection (that will either fail code inspection or the reason for code itself - it'd be extremely dangerous to young children) you've got to tighten them down to where there's around 2000 - 3000 lbs of force on the attached surface. Ask yourself this, would you hang something that's 2000 - 3000 lbs off of your newel/wall? If the answer is no, don't do cable.
    The spacing and cable tensing has to be precise. you don't want a child forcing their head through the cables getting choked, because you want a cool look on a budget. The cables loosen up over time, and the deflection gets worse. The professional contractors that install these system use specialized tools to make sure the tensioning is done properly. And the systems are generally designed by an engineer.
    Another hazard if you go with cheapo cable fittings, and you DO happen to tighten the cable down enough. Then you've got a stainless cable under high tension, with shotty fittings, waiting to break and whip around. Anyone that knows about high tension cables knows how dangerous that is.
    There's also the issue of cable tensioning destroying cheap metal newels like the ones shown in the video. When tightened to code, the cable can bow wood handrails and bend cheap metal top mount brackets. So if you go with stainless cable & cheap metal newels, you're setting yourself up for bad cable deflection. Because you won't be able to tension the cable enough without destroying your newels or rail.
    Stainless cable is alot like roofing or AC electrical. Just let someone do it that knows what they're doing, or use an alternative that you can DIY.

      More than the aesthetic aspect, Poplar is a soft wood….the only downside would be the hardness, could scratch or dent easily….so depends on the use and the budget….but anyways, having that in mind, is a very good and cheap option…..good job!

Some of the cables had too much slack to be tightened it had to be Cut and reattached so for anyone installing this system outdoors allow for the inevitable slack you will get in the future so you can tighten without having to cut and reattach.
