La patience devrait être présente dans toutes les activités. Hélas, on rencontre de plus en plus de gens pressés et stressés,n'ayant aucune patience...
I'm not a blacksmith, but I've never been fortunate enough to build something that didn't require a fix of something that went not-to-plan. Thanks, and Merry Christmas!
Good to see an experienced blacksmith make mistakes! I try to think of them as learning experiences (but it's still irritating). Been using that ball detail lately and try to make it after most of the forging is done to avoid breaking it.
Great video, you show how to modify something when you have a problem and still make something useful. That helps everyone that might have the same problem. I like the finished piece you made, gives me some ideas, for possible future Christmas gifts, thanks!
Wonderful project and great video. It is nice to know that it can happen to the best craftsman also. A great craftsman knows how to recover and you demonstrated that.
Thanks John! I hope you and your family have a merry Christmas. You have inspired me to start the craft. I am taking a intro class in January. I hope to just enjoy the crafting.
That's really cool John. I never thought about using a v block to taper it down. I figured you'd have to make it out of a thin piece of metal and make a cone. Merry Christmas ⛄
looks really good in the end John, I'd like to see your original idea for it but this one is still a good looking item Thanks for sharing and Happy new year to you both.
Love the lesson thank you . Happy New Year John and looking forward to learning more with your fine teaching. Mistakes happen in all walks of creating but not giving up is key. Your project looks great.
Very nice functional tool, I'm going to have a crack at a few of those. I like the butcher tool for making the ball shape, might have to make one of those too. Good to see even the best have things go wrong. Love your content, have a Merry Christmas and happy new year, greetings from a pretty hot and dry Aus.
Yuletide Greetings from MD. Great snuffer, although not what you had in mind. I'd think of it as a prototype, a work in progress. Only to be improved upon.
Merry Christmas John. I was wondering if you could do a short to demonstrate rounding over the sharp edge on the outside of the die to give us novices an idea of what it needs when we make our own dies? Thank you for your dedication to the craft and sharing your wisdom with us. Blessings to you and your loved ones.
Merry Christmas, stay warm!!! Btw next time make the threads first before the detailing then run the die again after. Also some tap magic will make it cut smoother.
Im just starting out and i have a duel burner forge. I have two questions about it. The first question is can i run one burner on the forge and leave the other burner off. And my second question is what propane tank should i run
Hi John, and Merry Christmas. Here's my novice (maybe stupid) question. When making the ball feature, could I start by fullering 2 bands around the bar stock, instead of using the butcher tool...and then form the ball from the short section of full diameter bar left between the 2 bands?
Does anyone know how to fix tongs 😂 I recently finished a set and when I went to forge with them, they loosened up a lot. The reigns kept getting closer with each hammer blow. Thank you for any help
@BlackBearForge Thank you! I reset the rivet. They are the Ken's Custom Iron quick tongs. The reigns are about 3/8" in diameter. Hopefully the rivet didn't shear. Thank you for all the great content and inspiration. Definitely my favorite blacksmith on the Internet 😁
i love to see mistakes and then the fixes one comes up with to continue with the project. thanks for showing the mistakes.
Having the patience to readjust your plan when something goes wrong is a virtue. Very nice job! As always!
Thank you

Merry Christmas, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
As always, this video is chock full of useful information, whether you're forging a candle snuffer or something else. Thanks, and Season's Greetings!
Thanks! Happy Holidays to you too!
14:01 you just made a beautiful magic wand for a blacksmithing wizard :)
Glad to see you making things for yourself and putting in the time, because you enjoy it and not always working for a customer.
This channel is my blacksmithing fix. I am definitely not a blacksmith I can’t forge a nail. I love this channel so much.
That’s how it goes. It is beautiful regardless of the mistakes.
Good to see an experienced blacksmith make mistakes! I try to think of them as learning experiences (but it's still irritating). Been using that ball detail lately and try to make it after most of the forging is done to avoid breaking it.
The handle shape is pretty neat, ill have to try that.
It may not be what you were aiming for, but it's still pretty nifty. Thanks for bringing us along, John! Merry Christmas!

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.
Merry Christmas, and thank you for letting us enjoy watching what you enjoy doing.
Merry Christmas
First 2 things I made in metal shop in school were candle holder and snuffer. Holder came out really good. I had a lot of fun in that class.
Merci beaucoup, magnifique vidéo, passez de bonne fêtes de Noël ❤. (Elle éclairait vraiment très fort cette bougie 😅)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Wonderful project and great video. It is nice to know that it can happen to the best craftsman also. A great craftsman knows how to recover and you demonstrated that.
I've had to punt many times to meet a deadline. Merry Christmas, John.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
A nice bit of work John, I love that tool that puts the ball on! Might have to make myself something like that set of dies!
Great work! I’m a woodcarver and basically do the same with scrap limbs etc. .
Merry Christmas John. Great video and nice result!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Great project and presentation 😊
John, Thank you for another great video. The result is great without the other ball detail, and We will keep your secret!😅
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas
I don’t normally comment John but I like the piece without the ball accent on the end. Quite a nice piece just as it is!
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
That's really cool John. I never thought about using a v block to taper it down. I figured you'd have to make it out of a thin piece of metal and make a cone.
Merry Christmas ⛄
Making a cone may actually be easier, but it ends up with a seam to deal with. Merry Christmas
Great video have a super Christmas and a great New Year.
Thank you! You too!
Merry Christmas, thank you for another interesting video.

Merry Christmas to you too!
A nice source of material for making balling dies is old ball bearings. I cut the outer race in half,
I have some larger swages made that way, but nothing in this smaller size. It would be worth scrounging up some old bearings.
I’ve been thinking of taking a 1” coil spring and turning it into a tomahawk would that be a good idea
That would be good steel for a tomahawk
@@BlackBearForge if I may ask how do u punch your eyes for tomahawks I’ve been having issues with them coming out even
Concerning the finish, could you use something like a cast iron season or a Bees wax possibly?
Yes, any of that would be fine
@BlackBearForge thank you so much, Mr. John! Happy holidays to you and yours, sir
This doesn't have any significance to the video, but could a railroad spike work as a hole punch?
Ina pinch, but it won't hold up for long
You think it would survive making an improved railroad spike axe like that one you made?
Im just starting out and i have a duel burner forge. I have two questions about it. The first question is can i run one burner on the forge and leave the other burner off. And my second question is what propane tank should i run
I have a question. Is it possible to use instead of propane tank propane-butane(80% prop 20% butane) tank for gas forge ?
Possibly, but it isn't something I have any experience with.
Most propane has a percentage of butane contained in it as purchased anyway. I don't think the percentages your thinking of would be a problem.
@@BlackBearForge Recently tried with more butan and it works but it just has less heat
Before you put the cone on and after the ball detail mistake it looked like a wand from Harry Potter LOL. Personally I thought it was cool. LOL
I had that same thought
Hi John, and Merry Christmas. Here's my novice (maybe stupid) question. When making the ball feature, could I start by fullering 2 bands around the bar stock, instead of using the butcher tool...and then form the ball from the short section of full diameter bar left between the 2 bands?
Yes, that is essentially what the tool I have does
@@BlackBearForge Thanks for the help...
Beautiful work. What size hole did you drill in the guillotine tool for the ball?
I think it was 3/8"
Have you read Ryan Ridgway's book The Home Blacksmith? If so, what did you think and are there any other books you would recommend?
Does anyone know how to fix tongs 😂 I recently finished a set and when I went to forge with them, they loosened up a lot. The reigns kept getting closer with each hammer blow. Thank you for any help
You should be able to tighten the rivet. But if the reins are bending you will need to start over with heavier material.
@BlackBearForge Thank you! I reset the rivet. They are the Ken's Custom Iron quick tongs. The reigns are about 3/8" in diameter. Hopefully the rivet didn't shear. Thank you for all the great content and inspiration. Definitely my favorite blacksmith on the Internet 😁
. . . Straighten, then weld to bar stock that forms the body of the die.
Where did you get that long ruler with the shoulder on it?

@ awesome thank you so much! New to blacksmithing, currently rigidizing my gas forge and been watching your videos! Love the content!
Are you able to share the specs of your guillotine tool so others can make one similar to yours?
That tool is available here - www.blacksmithsupply.com/Smithin-Magician_c_56.html
What size do you use in the video for this project?
