The Ladder Doesn’t Matter - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

  • Friends, why was the story of Jesus with the little children, versions of which appear in the three synoptic Gospels, so vividly remembered by the first Christians? I think they intuited that it got very close to the heart of Jesus’ teaching. The way Mark sets up his account of this story in our Gospel for this weekend is frankly funny, and it’s an example of the disciples completely missing the point of everything.

    I grew up when the world was fun still a kid in the 70s playing pick up baseball games riding bikes exploring nature. My son grew up in the age of travel soccer and pressure to be a professional athlete at the middle school level lol. He stopped playing because it wasn’t fun. He later while in the military started playing pick up soccer games and found a network of guys who loved to play for the sake of the game. He has never had more enjoyment out of sports in his life and he’s become an amazing athlete for the right reasons. Sports are a great example of how parents go nuts with their kids and steal their joy

      Hah! We used to just play in the woods. Mount "scientific expeditions." Then we'd ride our bikes up and down massive hills for hours, be sad we had to come in when the street lights came on, and sleep very, very well. No one was fat. That's for sure.

    I am a substitute teacher. It is beneficial for my daughters that I am able to work periodically and focus on their needs, more than working full-time and being preoccupied with others' needs.
    On a daily basis, it feels that I have to continuously state my credentials for people. What school I went to, why I am only subbing and not teaching full-time. Basically, in their eyes, why are you settling for less. It's exhausting!
    I had my children to raise them, not to throw them in daycare and virtue signal that I'm a superwoman because I can work full-time and have kids, too. I've acknowledged that I can not do it all and have accepted that. ❤ I don't want the honor. I want to raise healthy, well-rounded, psychology sound children who can face this materialistic world with grace, integrity, and intellect.

    I pray for our leaders who’ve been placed far up the “ladder”. May they maintain humility and a childlike joy for simplicity so that the harsh reality of power doesn’t corrupt them completely. Great leaders such as Lincoln and Churchill and King David fulfilled roles that God needed for his people. While they stumbled they did not fail.

    Can you imagine being that child, simply unaware yet being entirely what God made him or her to be, being embraced by the physical Lord? We can comprehend this now looking back, but imagine the disciples in their bewilderment at this, not grasping the reality of it all. Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ!!

    One thing I've noticed about children in general: they don't find it difficult to believe in God, in the concept that someone created the world. Then when we become adults, we become atheists or agnostics. Bishop Barron draws out a great lesson from this scriptural passage.

  • @heronwireo1085
    @heronwireo1085 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

    Thank you for that excellent summation of that Gospel. I'm afraid though that children have no difficulty putting themselves first in line without it being taught. I taught my children what I was taught: show respect; be helpful; hold the door for your mother (and by extension, everyone). They did all that and still proved very dogged and inventive about getting what they wanted (they also learned great loyalty and kindness, thank God) Status, Jordan Petersen pointed out, is a baked-in concept from Lobsters on up. No wonder it took God to show us the better way.

    Thank you, Bishop Barron, for putting life in such an incredible perspective. "Let the children come to me." As a mother, grandmother and Early Childhood educator those words have resounded over and over to me throughout my life. I am so saddened today that our culture does not value children and pray that this mindset will change.

    The waste of time spiritually... It's so sad, but it's so true.

    Truth v Honor
    Truth (citizen of the kingdom of God) V Honor. (to the self or tribe, accepts lying as a course of action..to that ladder). I’ll take Truth ❤✝️. Thank you for that inspiring sermon.

      However, the honour in 1 can inspire and feed to aspire...`your goals and actions from day 2 day.
