    Good video Sam! I had exactly the same issue as you as I bought a Oxford Radial extremely cheap that was completely dead but by bypassing the circuit board it was brought back to life and still works great to this day!

    Great show again Sam, and perfectly timed after supper with a coffee here. A DCC socket blanking plate causing a short. How interesting an odd at the same time... Can't remember ever having seen that. How could that be happening 🤔 Anyway, another one saved. Cheerio.

  • @RobA500
    @RobA500 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Good grief Sam, all you needed to do is bridge pins 1 to 8 and 4 to 5 on the socket with a bit of single core wire or even a bit of paper clip that fits in the socket holes.

    Sam I try to save as many locomotives and rolling stock as possible I received a 1856 revell electric model train locomotive and the motor was bad I couldn't buy just the pack motor because revell went out of business in the 70s I had an old. Bachman alco locomotive I got for parts low and behold the motor were almost the same thing I just changed the motor out the only. Problem I ran into how the new motor had to be mounted. On the frame I drilled two new mounting holes and it running on the layout today this was 12 years ago

    While I admit I’m not really into British/European styled locomotives, this is a rather handsome little steamer. I’m glad you got it working again, though I have to say that I’ve never seen the DCC adapter plug go bad before. Not that it’s safe from the scrapper’s torch, maybe you can go back and fix it so it is DCC ready. 😊

    Very nice video. Thank you for more excellent information. I have an Oxford Adams Radial in my Hattons trunk. They are such beautiful models that I bought one anyway, knowing they can be trouble and hoping that the troubleshooting and repairs on your channel will help me through any hiccups. Now for the broken record part: please stop using the time limit as it does not add anything useful for those of us who want to see all the repair steps and details.

    It's great to see you dealing with a recent engine with a well-known issue (and a model I had bought myself too, before changing it for the Hornby model via Hattons' !). And you have a tough one with this one, on a electrical point of view, but with a simple solution ! and suspense too !
    Lesson of the day : don't put your model engines in a deep fryer !

  • @jonny_vdv
    @jonny_vdv ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I probably would have used jumpers in the 8-pin plug instead of stretching the motor wires to the pickups personally, but well done nevertheless. It would have been a shame if this one couldn't be salvaged considering how good it looked aesthetically to begin with.

    Not really surprised to see an Oxford product on this series, to be honest you could get a whole series out of just trying to restore their poor products especially the locomotives, good to see it this restored though Sam although to be honest it still looks like it has problems when it was running at the end.

    Great Rescue of a lovely loco Sam. I wonder though, have you since done your magic by adjusting the front pony and rear bogie springs so that there is more weight pressing the driving wheels down on the track? I made those adjustments myself, to my own Adams radial Tank engine and although it isn't a massive puller of rolling stock it did approve its pulling power significantly.

      The 6 and 8 pin sockets are easily fixed without one you just need to connect the correct pairs of holes with a single core wire or a piece off small paper clip that fit the holes. Other more modern sockets are not so easy as they use fine pin plugs that can’t be bridged with such basic methods. In this loco it would have been pins 1 to 8 at one end of the socket and pins 4 to 5 at the other.

  • @johnarmstrong3782
    @johnarmstrong3782 ปีที่แล้ว

    As you have discovered the problem is not the motor. And there's a reason the DCC banking plug burns out and gets hot. It's the ridiculous brass/sprung plungers. They arc, overheat and fail. WD40 should be sprayed liberally into them before you run it. Spares seem to be unavailable. Utter shite. Unfortunately your fix means that you only have power from the driving wheels.

    I appreciate the concept, but chafe at the time limit. Your parameter should be base unit quality and value. A plastic'y garbage power unit should merit a trip to the tip. A quality engine should take as long as needed. There is nothing more pride inducing than going all in on a deserving fix. Instant sentimentality.
