I think for a lot of people, it's the familiarity of those chains, they know what to expect and most likely what they are going to get. People are quite understandably uneasy about booking somewhere they are not so sure about.
I love Blackpool and always stay at the Big Blue. It's not ridiculous but not cheap either. I'm always fascinated by the wee B&Bs though and wonder who stays in them, and do they have a nice stay. Like other commenters have said - this channel is great for showing you can holiday on a budget and also great for the wee B&Bs as it shows they're maybe not as scary as people think.

This place is a palace compared to some of the places we've stayed at in Blackpool for 5 times the price. I dont know if i would want to stay a full week in that room, but if youve been caught short, or need a cheap overnight stay its a bargain. Other than the repairing of the ceiling, It wouldnt cost more than £30-£40 to decorate that room out and tidy it up a bit more (curtains and pole, a voil for the window, a couple of pictures/artwork for the wall etc) fitting the tv up on the wall wouldnt take ten minutes, and would mean you could move the tea/coffee stuff and kettle on to where the tv is, then get rid of the unit the kettle was on to make more room. The bathroom only wants a bit of touching up decorating wise, and going round with a steamer and some bleach. The windows could do with steaming aswell. If they did all that to it, for not much money, then it would be spot in, and make it feel like you were getting an even bigger bargain. If i had been staying there, i would gave found myself popping in to hime bargains ir somewhere similar for those things like the curtains, bleach etc and doing those things myself, just to make it feel a bit more homely during my stay. And it would be a bit nicer for whoever stays after that. But still you are getting a room for 2 people cheaper than a burger and fries for one. Unless you get your burger from Chris Higgit's.
When I moved to Blackpool 24 years ago (for work), It took me a week to find a flat. I paid for 7 nights at a place in Foxhall. This place is a palace compared to that. I stayed for one night and abandoned ship. I would honestly rather have slept on the beach. It was beyond awful. Didn't even have a real bed. It was a Z-bed thingy, and it was over £200 for the week.
