I don't see any harshness here. I see the Judge telling her the truth. Adults are responsible for what they do and what they allow to keep happening to them. She knew how this man was but she wanted to hold on to him. Some people need the hard truth in order to wake up. Judge Mablean is a Judge, not a counselor.
