  • A trip from Liverpool to Manchester on a Mersey ferry in 1983.
    Silent cine film.
This nearly did not happen, because as we saw Eastham entrance locks in the distance, there was a dispute about the South American cargo of a tanker underway, and the Ferry was not allowed to enter. We cruised back to Liverpool, turned upstream again, and headed towards Eastham. The same happened again, but on the third approach, with the tanker turned away into the Mersey, we entered with both bottom gates and top gates fully open on flood tide. The weather deteriorated, and as we passed Runcorn on the 36 mile canal journey, I was the only passenger on deck in the driving rain.
I managed to use every second of the four Super 8 cartridges (3 mins 40 secs each), and the camera was struggling with the level of available light by the time we reached Barton.
A double decker bus raced us to Piccadilly station, and we "just" made the connection back to Lime street.
This was a "great canal day out".
note: The "Philmac Adventurer" was built in 1982 by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Nagasaki. After several owner and name changes, she was scrapped in 2013. Her specification was:
Gross Tonnage 25,593. Dead Wt 40,794 LOA 204.20 Draft 10.99
Speed 15.5 knots. One Sulzer 10,738 kW engine.
