I had this same idea, and thought to look matters up to see if I was crazy, etc.for thinking to do this. The goal was to add a measure of durability to common cardboard items.
Thanks! I be bought an adorable cardboard box of sponges that looks like a cassette recorder and I really wanna make it strong to sit on my kitchen shelf and had no idea what to use.😊☺️🙏✝️
I seen this video in the search engine when i searched cardboard lamination. i was looking for someone who tried to fiberglass cardboard to see what they feel about their end product. I haven't found any videos on that, most people just fiberglass wood. But Tech Ingredients has very interesting information on composites and etc... that you can take in almost any direction, because he is very detailed in explanation. But my ideal was to laminate cardboard to itself, and then laminate the fiberglass cloth to it using epoxy or polyester resin. I bet that would be strong and beautiful looking end result too. i said something here because it is similar to the result you got from shellac, it will be very hard surface adding strength to the pieces. I am looking for a way to use cardboard for structural(load) purpose.
This is great, I too am on the lookout for materials I can replace my aluminum sheet metal with. Wood veneer, vulcanized fibre and cardboard comes to mind. Also looking to increase stability in cardboard for cheap. My idea was to soak it in wood glues and press into shape, like one would do with metal. using epoxy resin is something I am not fond of, it will be sturdy no doubt but I want to use systainable materials.
Very helpful thank you I have a great display A business was putting it in the recycling dumpster and it’s lagging you and I definitely will use the shellac!!
M&M´s are covered in shellack, it gives them their gloss and hard outer surface to protect the candy. Many other candies use that too. So it´s really harmless.
@@alfonso3990 I am a pro on this topic. The difference between water based and other chemical based is usually that wated takes longer to dry. You probably can, just need to try that out.

I recently purchased a hardcover book, copyright 1920, it has a coating of shellac to the outside boards themselves, and judging by the appearance of the book, very fine condition, it looks like the shellac was applied soon after purchase in 1920? It seemed to work beautifully, but strangely enough, I can't find any information whatsoever on the internet related to applying shellac to hardcover books to protect them?
Could you shellac two pieces of paper together to make a smooth hard surface... Shellac the top of the 1st piece of paper and then add a second piece of paper on top. Bascially using shellac as a glue to make the paper hard?
I have a flimsy video game system box, if I added Shellac to the inside cardboard surface, would that help stiffen it up? I can't put it on the outside of the cardboard because of the box art.
Hello. I just finished painting and gluing foil onto thin cardboard wings. The wings fold upwards. (For a costume) Can you please tell me if I can use this to paint over foil and paint? And will it help reinforce the folded wings? I want them to be sturdy and stay upwards. They're cracking too.... after I folded them. Btw love your camera!
Hi. I have a cardboard project that I wish to paint it. This project piece needs hardening so I wish to use shellac to accomplish that but do I shellac the project before or after I have painted the project?
Oil based paints are said to work; here's an article. I am going to shellac; then use a clear enamel spray paint (all are said to be oil based) and then paint with acrylic.
Great way is to soak cardboard in 25% shellac solution. After 30 to 60 minutes it penetrates the cardboard completely. It will dry in about one week to one month, and sholud be dried far from fire sources.
I made a UV light sanitizing box for my hospital work gears. I want to use shellac on the outside to protect it from the weather elements. However, I am wondering if it would be harmful with the uv light? The uv is on the inside and the inside of the box is lined with aluminum.
Try fiberglass, if you wanna build with cardboard. Two layers of 1.5oz chop strand mat and polyester, resin It'll be as tough as nails been doing it for over 30 years.
Any idea how good this works as a insulator for electrical projects e.a. battery boxes, Can you use screws? Is it water repellent, or does it soak and swell?
Just coming across your channel! We need you back bc the cardboard works is picking up and your videos are amazing!
