I literally just turned fourteen, and I'm self taught...I tend to lean in more towards the crossing of manga/realism I guess? This is my first year taking art and I feel like I can finally dig deeper into your tutorials. Thanks for everything Mark! :D
i like how you lightly colored with the colored pencil against the almost construction paper like surface because it gives you that sand papery effect that bone often has
Out of every step-by-step video I love yours best! Number one it is not all sped up and number two you actually speak and detail it! I love the descriptions and the touch of humor in there! Keep it up man, it's awesome!
Hi, I think your videos are great. My middle school art students are very successful using the guidelines. I cut paper squares instead of having them measure so they don't have to mess with rulers. We are currently having a Mark marathon until the end of school (20 days) so the videos with guidelines and narration are what I am showing. Thanks so much.
I just started drawing a couple of days ago and by following these tutorials I actually draw like I if I have drawn my whole life, I love these tutorials!
markcrilley The indentation on the skull, to the right of the cheek bone on your drawing, is the area where muscles connect from the lower jaw to the head. If you look at a different picture of a skull, you'll see that the cheek bone area actually has a hole in it for the muscle to go through. If you place your hand on your own head, above and a little forward of your ear, and clench and relax your jaw, you can actually feel the muscle move. I have no idea where I learned that, except that it was probably on the History Channel, or the Discovery Channel. I'm one of those people who can remember weird trivial stuff, but not information I actually *need* to remember! ;)
Drawing looks like it'd take 1 hour or so to make, but it took you a lot more. I sometimes draw something that looks like it took an hour but I actually had spent 4 on it or so... I tought I was too slow and that sometimes upset me. But looks like some things need time :) Thank you, Mark! Great video!
The ridge isn't meant to protect the eye, it's there because just behind it sets a cavity were the larger facial muscles sit to move the jaw. But this is a great video. And you're an awesome teacher!
Hi Crilley. Have both your books. And I was wondering if you could give us little tutorial on how to draw ethnic hairstyles? Like afros, kinky curls, dreadlocks, small size dreadlocks and things of that nature. I would greatly appreciate it.
PS: Im going to start drawing on black paper, I loved the contrast and all the things that you can come up with, I think is way better than drawing the opposite on white paper... Thank you again.
I love the jokes and your narration. That make the videos more entertaining and your art work is amazing. Learned so much and soon to be the new proud owner of mastering manga 1 and 2. Keep up the amazing work and jokes. Can't wait for more videos!
Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. I share this with my High School Art students at Halloween for a fun drawing lesson. If you have it in you to make another white on black demo with a non-holiday theme, I would LOVE it!
Abosutely stunning, Mark Crilley is one of the Masters, I have also learned so much from you, I only regret you werent there when I was 8, I could have been a master like you. Im 47 but Im going to try to go as far as I can.... Thank you so much for the joy you bring to me, and to countless millions. my respect from Puerto rico...
I don't know if anyone said this but the ridges above the upper teeth where where the adult teeth set and grow when baby teeth where in use... that's why brushing your baby teeth is important cause they do have contact with the adult teeth in those channels (ridges) by the time out skull grows the channels become softened making them more like ridges! ^-^ hehe just so you know as info hehe
the nose is filled with these bones called nasal conchae which help create turbulence when we breathe, my assumption is that curved outward part you were referring to is a part of that, but I'm no expert just a regular school student studying anatomy.
I'm actually doing a Halloween-y project in my art class now (it's a horror style thing) and we've been drawing skulls a lot lately so this video is actually really helpful
This makes me feel like trying to draw marvels ghost rider, additionally i looked up skulls and found what i think might be your reference photo. Your ability to decide which small features are important and which major features you can change drastically i an awesome thing. love it
Now it would be great to do the exact thing on white paper with black pencil.I know it is considered common but it is hard for some to find black paper!
Its weird you can't get a hold of black paper. Can you order online? There is dick blick/utrecht. Cause Im in the USA, and black paper is every where. Its likely though he is using canson mi-teintes which is why you can also see texture on the paper.
Hey Mark! I was wondering if you could do a video on different types of markers. Like a comparison of like copics and prisma colors and what you recommend for beginners. I'm sure lots of people (including me) would find such a video to be very helpful. :)
I just found out about you today because my drive for art randomly came back to me and I thought I had your Manga books, but it turns out I have "Draw Super Manga Monsters" and "Draw Super Manga" by David Okum. I believe my older brother has those two books of yours though. Tomorrow I'm going to try and draw a skull and see how that goes. Great video :)
The texture and detail you add is amazing. I'm still working on my skills, but learning something new each and every day. Thank you for these videos. :)
Hey Mark, I was wondering if you could make a video talking about how you got to the point you're at now. Meaning of course, getting your comic published and the steps you took to create it. I'm curious about this, because I'm thinking about making a comic of my own...
I have no intention of learning how to draw a skull, but I still came hare just to hear Mark talking (and sometimes giving extra advices) and laughing with his funny voices and ideas xD
Hey, I've been wondering this for a while: for all your drawings, before you start filming, do you sketch the picture out a bit roughly beforehand? I guess you would because you have those box-like guidelines a lot, but, like, how long do you study pictures and how much do you sketch out your own design before you actually turn on your camera, get another piece of paper, and draw the final picture? Is most of it on the spot or do you have it all figured out?
Hey Mark, These cracks are called "suture" btw. There are in deed 5 of them on a skull. I really like how well you prepare for your videos. Very detailed.
I just got Brody's ghost book 1, and i gotta say, it,s pretty good, the thing i like the most, is the art. It's a japanese influenced style, with a little bit of American style there. So it gives a Nice flow of both of them. I will order the next book next week!( sorry 4 the bad english)
mark have you though of making another book that only concentrates on how to color manga? maby something like mastering coloring manga? (the third book in the series?) Im sure im not the only one that would love to learn how to color?
Mark i actually have two questions to ask 1.you always say "basics" in your videos but i dont think ive ever seen you do a basics video, have you already? 2. You spend so much time drawing for us and drawing for the public, do you ever just sit down and draw something for yourself?
Amazing video. your videos are so descriptive when talking about the little details I own your mastering manga 1 book and its really helped me thank you
Can you cover how draw a skull on white paper with regular pencil. I'm interested in how to shade it without making the skull grey since im using a black pencil and just play on the white paper keeping the skull white
Mark the ridges that u see above the teeth are actually were the root of ur teeth are they are just underneath that part of the bone and that's what creates that effect
It's funny when you say stuff like "Skullology". It brings in a little extra humor to what might otherwise be somewhat formal. Your videos are great for learning without being overly dry. That's what I like the best. You crack me up
Omg I really love your videos, I've actually been trying to get better at drawing by watching your videos because I want to be an animator, I know it will take a long time to learn to draw as good as you but I would like it if you had any tips for me so I can get better!!! Thanks!!!!☺️
Hey Mark really love the videos! A big fan of your realistic drawing videos and was wondering if you could by any chance do a realistic hair one? I've seen other videos from other artists but they don't seem to show or explain in very well detail like you do. Again love your videos, oh and your books as well.:)
Can you make a video about making background details? I know you have done some background things but I would like to know how to draw tables and stuff without them looking unrealistic or ugly.
Hi mark! I just love your videos. Are you a freelancer? I'm 14 and I want to publish my own comics but I don't know exactly what to do. I want to be a comic artist, and I need some advice on what it's like in that career. Is it hard or is it easy? Anyway thank you for posting such awesome art!!!
Hi Mr Crilley! I'm going away for a while and I don't think I'll be able to access the internet in order to find references. I was thinking as a substitute I could try and get one of your mastering manga books. Which one would you recommend? And roughly what does each book contain? Thanks!

Hello markcrilley, Would there a possibility if you could try using the program "paint tool sai" please :D ? ? Would love to see what you can come up with. Just a suggestion from a lover of your artworks and tutorials. ^.^
Great video! Let me start off with i am a huge fan of yours! I watch you regularly, i have both mastering manga books and have enjoyed a good slew of brodys ghost which is awesome! And i just wanna ask are you gonna be doing a video anytime soon about battledamaged backgrounds? Because that is the only thing im having trouble with at the moment, is like when a protagonist and antagonist fight i can never get craters right or proper scene of destriction like when some one is flung into a cliff and what not. Well any ways amazing art as per usual and i apologize about my horrid spelling.
I love the details in brody's ghost, i read it a lot, and everytime i see something new, like the miki falls books in the store! Love your drawings! My BFF and i made this skull, i made a woman and she a man ( not on purpose )
You give me so much inspiration to draw. Not that I could ever be as good as you, but you explain everything so good and the way you draw and talk is entertaining! Thank you for all the hours I spend on enjoying these videos! Btw, from Norway, so my english might not be totally correct! :)
O.O Witchcraft... I would love, love, LOVE to see your take on Zentangle. If you've never heard of it, it's the process of creating beautiful art from repeating patterns...if you somehow actually read and pay attention to this, thank you so much for making all your wonderful videos. You're a true inspiration. ^_^
I never noticed until this video just how much pencil it takes, when the video starts it says PRISMACOLOR, by the end it's ACOLOR, sharp pencil is the key!!
Hi Mark, thanks for the great tutorial on drawing with black paper. I really want to try it for a project, however I have absolutely no idea where I can get my hands on affordable black paper. Again, I believe you are an amazing artist. Your flowing form and graceful marks convey true artistry.
Moomers Cow Wow thanks! :)
Graceful Marks :P
Hey Mark you should do a video on the very basics on drawing manga and advise on drawing to help new people wanting to draw
Out of every step-by-step video I love yours best! Number one it is not all sped up and number two you actually speak and detail it! I love the descriptions and the touch of humor in there! Keep it up man, it's awesome!

Amazing artist mark crilley just wow no words

Amalie Underbakke Thank you so much, Amalie ^_^
Why are people always numbering themselves in comments does it make them feel special??😐
Nice work Mr crilley
Those lines above the teeth are where the roots of the teeth are actually in the skull. So in a sense, yes, it is support for the teeth.
O.O Witchcraft...

Mark, have you watched Steins;Gate and if so how did you like it and would you consider drawing maybe Okabe Rintarou from that anime? Great video btw
another masterpiece Mark!
its crazy how good you are
What kind of paper are you using?? Probably stonehenge???
Hey Mark, could you draw Malfurion Stormrage or someone from World of Warcraft? They're always so detailed and Malfurion is pretty damn cool :)
wow that's some good art
wow this is so cool , thanks for this mark!
I never noticed until this video just how much pencil it takes, when the video starts it says PRISMACOLOR, by the end it's ACOLOR, sharp pencil is the key!!
You are great Mr. Crilley and thank you for your amazing videos you are an inspiration for everyone :) :)
Mark, you should draw a chibi Al to go with your chibi Ed from one of your recent videos.
Hi Mark, thanks for the great tutorial on drawing with black paper. I really want to try it for a project, however I have absolutely no idea where I can get my hands on affordable black paper. I don't want to use construction paper, but I also don't want to spend so much paying for each page of paper. Does anyone have suggestions?

First of all I want to thank you for recognizing Halloween. It's my favorite holiday of the year.
More importantly, I want to thank you for all your how to draw videos. I've learned so much from them and your instruction has been paramount in my continuing to strive to be the best I can be in my drawing.
I'm looking forward to your future videos.
Take care.
Sincerely,
Debbie
Debbie Stoughton Thank you so much, Debbie!
I have learned too!🎨
Nice job :) I like this video.
I do believe the ridges over the teeth are where the roots of the teeth are.
It's quite insane how you created this. Just a little white pencil and white paint in that way makes it look like a photograph. Great job!
Hi I liked this can you please do an animal drawing tutorial on black paper?
wow amazing i love skulls i dont know why.. gr8 vid bro..
I have a question. What is the difference between realism and overdoing details?
Hey,Mark! Love the video. Could you show me how to draw a masquerade like character?
Please explain to me why u are so good at drawing
