This lesson show you what to look when you want to buy a tabla, then how to tune it. Then John gives a short lesson on how to start with the bayan. All lessons by John on our website : www.play-tabla.com
Hello. Thanks very much for your great vid. I even appreciate a lot as I'm waiting my tabla set just shipped today. So I will use the indications you provided in order to get in tune both drums. Thanks again for this.
That's a useful guide to tuning in particular. I have just bought my son some tabla. They were bought on the recommendation of his tabla teacher and they sound much better than the ones we'd borrowed but we'll obviously have to keep them in tune, particularly the dayan. My son has perfect pitch and a very good ear but I suspect using the hammer properly is not as easy as it looks.
I tune to a sine wave, much easier to get super precise tuning, because you can hear the actual beating of the note against the reference, which is not very easy with a tanpura or even piano note or whatever.
Hi john thanks for the tip but you have one error: you do not play the left drum with 2 fingers you only play it with one. but overall great video and thanks for the tips
how many bracing tired on wooden blocks? in video it seems 4 bracing are tied on wooden blocks while other videos seen only 2 bracing are tied on wooden blocks.
depends on the size, usually 5.5 inches diameter drum means from b to c#, maybe d at the highest, but c-c# is the best range for that size. That is the smaller drum, called specifically "tabla" . The baya is easier to tune, but a little more complicated as far as pitch. it doesn't necessarily have to be at the right pitch open, but with your palm you control the pitch. So it is good to have a good interval, but whatever sounds good is fine. Zakir Hussain, though, has such an accurate pitch on the baya, that singers can sing with him accompanying without a drone. That takes a lifetime of practice, and there are some masters who can't do what he does. I have heard him play actual basslines, like a walking upright bass line on the baya.
Nyall Jodhan i am a tabla student... It is better that the bayan should be in copper metal base....Steel and iron is also ok ...dayan should be in shesham wood
Can someone help me to tune my tablas. I am a beginner and I just bought it. It sounds very low comparing to all the tablas I heard. I would really appreciate if someone can give my his advice. Thanks Pierre

I've watched a lot of videos on tabla buying and tuning. By far this is the best as I not understand that tablas are tuned to their own level. Thanks
Thanks to share your knowledge with us John! this is extremely helpful!! All the best and keep beating the beat!
Thanks a lot for your demonstration. Simple and unique. Really appreciated

are bayan and dayan to be adjusted on same pitch/scale?
really enjoyed to listen U :)
Great stuff
Can we increase the bass of dugga/bayan? If yes, how?
how do you know what pitch to tune a particulary drum too , ie the difference between a c sharp one and not?

Agreed 5.5 inches is best for C#. I got a 6 inch dayan C# made by somnath kakade
which scale tabla should i buy i am a beginner? c#, B, c, or d#? or which scale should i tune
Does it matter what material the bayan is made of? wood, copper, steel?

Beautiful
I want to buy this dugga
thanks good vid
good~!
good
Sir how you get full pitch sound in dagga(a resonance)🤔😊😊🙏
so would it be possible to tune a C# tabla any other note or is it strictly C# and just get another tabla? Thank you
It is possible but it won't have that same essence as it would on its respected note.
Actually it may have the same essence but it can be risky sometimes for example a D# tabla, if on F, it could rip apart.
Very useful
