With that being said there is a prevalence of antibiotic use and heavy metal pollution in farm raised catfish. Hello adam! Environmental engineering student here. The Bioballs that you mentioned in your video are actually what we call "Packing" materials, they are packed in a column or in a tank where water can trickle through. (In fact, the drum in his basement is a trickling filter)
    Packing material generally has a lot of surfance area which allows for aerobic bacteria to grow onto the surface and develop a Biofilm, which is then what cleans the water to become "effluent" grade. Trickling is also important as it prohibits the growth of anaerobic bacteria, which can actually emit obnoxious gasses, and it isn't really a pleasant experience.
    I'm happy actually that I saw a tertiary treatment step before dumping the wastewater out, as halfway through the video I was just under the impression that he dumps the wastewater out, which is very high in BOD, and can cause eutrophication in the bodies of water it might hit.

    • @iluvearth99

      How does aerobic bacteria filter water? Wouldn’t that be adding bacteria?

    • @bernardmontemor
      @bernardmontemor 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

      @@iluvearth99 bacterium, may be aerobic or anaerobic are ubiquitous-- they are everywhere. The mechanism of action done by the Biofilm formed by the bacteria can be a bit sophisticated, but generally nutrients are broken down and eaten as their energy source, leaving the water "nutrient-less" which is better off as effluent. Water that is rich in nutrients such as BOD, Nitrates, and especially Phosphates, if left untreated, can cause eutrophication, a phenomenon in which there is an uncontrolled growth of algae + which then competes with oxygen sources in the water, eventually killing the fish, further ruining the water quality.

      How does the lack of light affect the fish? It isn't good for them if they can't produce vitamin D or synchronize their circadian rhythm.

    • @goosenotmaverick1156
      @goosenotmaverick1156 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      @@sqlexpto my understanding they don't have a rhythm like we do, really. However we keep fish indoors quite regularly with very little to no access to natural light, in fact we tend to avoid it more than take advantage of it. Our goals as aquarists tend to lean towards consistency and stability of the ecosystem, if being managed in a natural-ish manner. A fish's diet is very important and a well cared for fish has a varied diet, with foods that have added vitamins to prevent deficiencies. If a person was really concerned with fish, they could get full spectrum LEDs or use vapor bulbs (metal halide or high pressure sodium, I believe both produce the UV spectrum required for vitamin D production? Unsure on that part, I just know that even until more recent times, the way to healthy corals has been using vapor bulbs for lighting, until recently (last decade range I'd guess?) Rather than using LEDs. I don't do saltwater so that's about the extent of my knowledge, I just know that it's been fairly recent compared to the adoption of LEDs for plants and general freshwater use, which was fairly common (albeit pricey) well over a decade ago I'm fairly certain.
      I think fluorescent bulbs of most kinds also provide the UV needed as that's what they actually produce inside and that's what energizes the phosphor coating that gives the color, if memory serves correctly. Prior to LEDs, T5 HO florescents were the go to for lush plant growth due to the spectrum of light provided for plants.
      Sorry for the long winded rant, just thought I'd share my knowledge that I do have, as a freshwater aquarium nerd and electrician. I get super into the lighting aspect of the hobby.
      If you actually read this, thank you, and I apologize. TL;DR- it's totally possible to not have those issues mentioned by way of diet and lighting, and then second issue tends to not be an issue at all. They do need rest, and would become stressed, but would, nonetheless, be basically fine.

    LOL "you ever smoke weed". I love everything about this video. Makes me sad though they have to kill the sturgeon for the caviar. Fascinating watching the sturgeon farms in Italy. The fish would be like 20 years old if i remember right before being killed. So much effort for fancy food 😅

      There are some newer farms that sedate the fish and squeeze out the eggs and the fish survives. The videos are right here on youtube.

    Our basement was converted into a cistern by the previous owners who needed a big water storage for their greenhouses. It's about 25k gallons at half a meter depth if my math is correct.
    We haven't used it, but this video makes me want to try converting it into a fish pond.

    I've had pretty high success rates with actually filtering aquarium water 100% with all plants and no water change systems but I understand that his situation requires that he cannot have aquatic plants so what would instead be probably the best option would be an above-ground bog filter or maybe a moss trough which would sit above the tank the water would run through at which point the plants would filter the water or the Moss it would go over it and then it would simply flow back in it wouldn't even be in the tank

    "The first thing they said is to never let any girls know about it" guys have no idea how to get a good partner. If you give people a false version of yourself, they will never be attracted to you, only the fake version of yourself. To get someone who wants the same things out of a relationship as you do, you have to present what you want out of a relationship. If you like eel pits, that is what you need other people to know and that is how you will attract people who like the eel pits too.
