I really love Marc's enthusiasm for the trap play. His commentary is educational and much more entertaining than 99,9999% of sports reporting on TV. Well done, Sir!
Besides subscribing to Backgammon Galaxy's youtube channel, you should also subscribe to my personal youtube channel "Marc Olsen", I make a lot of less formal backgammon videos as well :)

I'm really new to this kind of strategy. I wish Marc showed the trap play by moving the checkers so I could have better visualized it. I think I'll go back and review beginner stuff now :)
Very entertaining, but I still don't understand what a trap play is. Seemed pitched to experienced players. Why for example would you split and leave 2 blots on 8 and 7?
To trap the checkers from coming in after they have been eaten. By leaving the checker back gives u an option to hit the escaping blots. The blot on the 3 point will eventually be hit and then both will be “trapped” from coming in.. just my 2cents. I’ve been following BG for like 4 hours.

The key is to force the opponent to leave the safety of their hiding place in your board: sometimes they will roll a high double and maybe even win, but mostly they can only go with one checker. As as soon as they break cover you will have many shots at them, and often can close both out for a gammon or certain single. The whole thing is a calculated risk, but the downside is a lot smaller than an inexperienced player might think!! It needs to be tried out, maybe on Gnu (free) or XG programs.
@@chufflangs I found one that works good. Check out the FREE Android app called BG Scoreboard which does a nice BIG scoreboard so you dont have to pay $50-75 for the paper ones. or try the app Chess Clock. sadly it doesnt have a scoreboard so you have to decide whats more inportant ifyou dont have an actual "hit the button" type of tmer. its nice because you can add the 12 second delay before it starts taking time off your play close just like they do in the tournaments.
@@chufflangs yes I saw it on a youtube video once. I am trying to figure out / remeber the name of it. it had BOTH the scores AND the timer. was very very cool . tey were using it in tournaments. i am guessing you want to lure the opponent to hit you. in this case so you don't lose a race, but in the case where you are forced to play a backgame yourself, you can trap the opponent to hit you so you get more backchekers for a stronger backgame. these are the only 2 instances i know that you actually want to get hit. btw this game would have ended in a sort of containment game if there was a hit.
Your opponent is hiding in a safe place. You need to open an escape, so that you will have shots at them. Sometimes you can just leave a gap, to force them to move out, sometimes you must leave a shot: but the chance of reward is a lot higher than the risk - something that an inexperienced player doesn't realise. If you have BG software - Gnu is free - you should set up the position, or similar positions, and play through many times, remembering to attack the checker that's left alone in your home-board!
@@grover- I think once your opponent splits, you'd have better chances to hit back since you have more ammunition. If your opponent has a blot on the 7 and the other on the 3, you have direct shots on both of them from 8 and 9. If you leave the 8, you lose a few shots.

Ok, but... What IS a trap play? Is there a good explanation of it online somewhere that you might recommend?

Hi Marc, at the 1 minute mark, why would the 7pt be the better trap play than the 8 pt? thanks
