    M R James was a master of ghost stories. None of his tales have "explainable" ghosts - they are really there and they are usually malevolent. "Oh whistle and I'll come to you, my lad" is an absolute classic of the genre.

    M R James's ghost stories may have been written 100-odd years ago, but the majority of them leave a dark, cold impression on you long after the book is closed 👻😈 "Oh Whistle and I'll Come To You" takes most of the glory, but my favourite is "Lost Hearts" 🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️

    Oh my god you're reading it!! It's like one of my all-time favourites, and definitely my favourite Stephen King. It's just so creepy from page 1. After the very first bit, the first 200 pages are a bit slow, but still quite easy to read, and after that it really pays off!

    A good haul! I hope you like the MR James. Not your typical ghost stories, much more weird. Had a similar take on Remina. A lot of the ideas are great and stick with you, but some of it doesn't work, as you say the ending in particular. Shiver and Smashed have some so-so stories but also some really good ones. Have fun!

    So much books I haven't heard of, thanks for the list! Definitely going to pick some of them, especially Sloane.
    IT reads surpisingly well even after the movies and spoilers, it's just a nice combination of summer, small american town and nostalgia for childhood. Guess it's one of those situations where the journey itself matters more than the destination.
    And man, I really hope to pick up this edition of Remina at some point. Sure, the plot is wonky and the ending is eh, but the artwork is worth it 100%!

    Shiver is great for Hanging Blimp and The Long Dream but, personally, my favorite Junji collection is Venus In The Blind Spot. It has The Human Chair, Billions Alone, Venus In The Blind Spot, The Licking Woman and The Enigma of Amigara Fault. All fantastic.

  • @inanimatecarbongod

    Oh, that William Sloane double is GOOD. They're more like each other than it perhaps sounds on the surface, but well worth reading. I was really disappointed after finishing them that these were his only novels (there's a handful of stories but I don't know if they're collected anywhere).
    The Monk is kind of nuts. So pleased you got a copy after all these years.
    IT is one of the few Stephen King books I've read, and that was a VERY long time ago (some time in the late 80s or 1990, I don't know exactly). I don't really remember much about it except the length.
    I've always been meh about King in Yellow. I do think "Repairer of Reputations" is a great story and the other KIY-related tales are good, but I never had any use for the unrelated ones.
    Haven't read Only Good Indians but have seen it recommended. I picked it up cos the ebook was going cheap on Amazon. Have been meaning to read some of Tremblay's stuff, too, just not sure what to start with. I also share your pet peeve about books that reference really modern things like Facebook. I know it's just the same as if a book written in the 50s referenced the characters watching TV, and that doesn't bother me when I come across it, but for some reason it irritates me reading about things like Twitter...
    I've read M.R. James' first volume of stories and I like individual stories, but I find reading too many of them in one go (even considering how short his collections are) makes for kind of monotonous going.

    • @RGsDevilship
      @RGsDevilship  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the pet peeve thing for me is that it kind of comes off as breaking the 4th wall, even though I know that's not what it is. I don't know, it always just comes off a a bit cringy to me when websites or apps are referenced. I'm glad I'm not alone there anyway!

    The MR James collection consists of carefully crafted non-allegorical horror stories - which apparently were written for narrative purposes so that he could tell the stories to his relatives & friends - that would probably explain their quick pace & lack of descriptive detail - but there's an immediacy to his work which seems real at times..
    Generally I like more descriptive horror writers like Machen, LeFanu, & Blackwood, because I like savoring their atmosphere - but MR James was unique - nobody wrote like him.

    Junji Ito's strong points are short stories. tho I did enjoy Remina, the short stories stand out more and are more memorable. idk if that's the name not if it's in any of the collections you showed, but I read Layers of Fear (I think that's the name of the story, but correct me if I'm wrong) that my best friend boyfriend recommended and I was left speechless by the end. the whole story is weird, but the ending... I still think about it sometimes....

    Hey. Am Reading IT right now in a readalong for summer with Carol Marie Reads and Brews & Binds -- chatting in Discord and Instagram. They've broken it up into manageable chunks for the whole of summer but you don't feel it's so long when reading (Kindle helps to forget too). Perhaps you could join in! We're just coming up to the second interlude now, so there's time to catch up.
    I did a Gothic course and never got around to The Monk, though it was set, but I need to. I did, however, read a pretty amazing Italian set one with a dark female 'villain'-- Zofloya by Charlotte Dacre. 1806 -- so a pretty twisted female character written close to when Austen was writing hah. It really sort of messes with the Gothic genre even at that stage. It’s been compared to The Monk for more than coincidence, as a female reaction even. I don't know but I know I love this one.

    • @RGsDevilship
      @RGsDevilship  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was disappointed by "The Rim of the Morning". NYRB publishes a lot of quirky over-looked books, that seems to be their mission. The first of the two stories included is OK but no great shakes. The second one is awful! I think one of the reasons this book was published was that the author presided over a fairly prestigious annual creative writing conference at swanky Middlebury college in Vermont for many years. These two stories show his own writing to be polished but uninspired. Another NYRB sci-fi book was stories by Anna Kavan which was also underwhelming. Another NYRB, "The Long Ships" was a Viking novel with no fighting, just a lot of domestic issues! Jakob van Gunten is a nice little book too but it is not horror. I guess I am saying you should be a little leery of NYRB books.
