    I grew up in the town of Tuolumne where the West Side Lumber Co mill operated. I actually got to ride in the locomotive, with the engineer of WSLCo Shay #15, from Tuolumne to Camp 24 in 1955 when I was 10 years old.

    Just came across this, and just having gotten the "New Shay" by Kozo, which I'd already planned to scale at 2 1/2" and Narrow gauge, found this to be perfect! These are awesome!
    Love seeing the Stephenson valve gears in action!

      There is a scaled up Kozo shay that runs on 7 1/2" track, I've seen it at LALS. Still all made of brass and unpainted, very striking engine. mikemassee.com/gallery/v/livesteam/album/LALS_50th/kozo_shay/LALS_50th_Anniv_3540-01.jpg.html

      Thanks for that link! That was a gorgeous engine! Built to Kozo's first shay plans. I'm now working to the new shay plans, his second shay, designed around a 1920's shay.

      The title may not be clear to metric users....they are two and a half inch to the foot scale, that is about 1/5 full size. Cheers.

      Now I see. 12/2.5=4.8 You're right. The imperial units are so tricky for me. One more thing, Do you use a comma or a dot for decimal numbers?

      I'm guessing 2 1/2 inch scale means 1 foot equals 2 1/2 inches so its 1/4.8th scale.

    That is certainly the rich-man’s hobby.
    It must cost hundreds of thousands in machining time for each one of those Shays. The rolling stock is probably $100s to $1,000s each.

    As a Looper, Georgetown Loop rr employee I got to operate GB&L14 on several occasions. I also got to operate GB&L12. These both are ex West Side Lumber Co. locomotives.
    The joke is that the 14 is a slut. She will put out for anyone. It’s said if you hold a lighter up to the firebox door she will steam.
    The 12 on the other hand was said to be very difficult. I personally never had a problem with her. To me the 12 was a slick a locomotive as the 14 and used less water.
    Loopers of 2004 highball.

    • @thomabb
      @thomabb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Google "Shay Steam Locomotives". These were designed for logging applications so they could climb and descend grades that other locomotives would struggle with. The driveshaft powers all the trucks on the locomotive and sometimes even on the tender. That gives the loco more tractive force, much like an all wheel drive car. You will notice the boiler is offset to allow room for the unique driveline setup, a distinguishing characteristic of the Shays. There are a couple original Shays still in operation on historic/scenic railways.

    • @ChrisB257
      @ChrisB257 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many thanks for the info - I shall now explore further. I can imagine the extra tractive force obtained. Quite fascinating.

    • @MasseeMedia

      Hi Chris. They are one of the three major geared types of logging locomotive. Emphram Shay was the inventor. I reccomend "Pacific Coast Shay: Strong Man of the Woods" by Dan Ranger. Unfortunately, the most complete volume, "The Shay Locomotive: Titan of the Timber" by Michael Koch is long out of print and very expensive, but you can find copies on Amazon and Ebay. Otherwise, check out shaylocomotive.com for some info online.

    • @MasseeMedia

      Richard Ulin of Ulin Locomotive Works sells the drawings. (and castings) there are probably also prototype erection drawings from Lima, the builders of the prototypes, if they survived.
