What's the Middle Income in Australia? | Richard Denniss Explains

  • There's been some confusion about who earns a 'middle' income in Australia, when talking about the Stage Three tax cuts. It might be less than you think. And just because $120,000 a year is less than it used to be, doesn't mean it isn't still a high income.

I love your work. I am a truck driver in the waste transport industry and earn plenty of overtime every week. I want to pay more tax, not less tax.

@@windwaker0rules you said ‘earn nothing’ not earn not much.
Also, we have a minimum wage and for citizens a social safety net. JobSeeker/NewStart/Dole pays a lot more than $100 a week.

Bit more than $100 a week or the ‘NOTHING’ for doing nothing you suggested. Not to mention the fact few people pay this much in tax to even offset the cost of unemployment benefits - all before childcare rebates, free schooling, free healthcare, heavily subsidised medications.

Having been a mechanic pretty well all my life, these "average" wages are really crazy figures. People on $190,000 pa should be able to live comfortably, pay off a house, have holidays each year, educate their children etc. etc. I did it on $45,00 pa. Of course, if you like to bet on the horses, drink and smoke, you're going to battle all through your life......

Clarifying the true situation re Australian earnings is an important job especially when politicians from both the big parties seek to mislead the public on these matters when it suits then.

Stage three tax cuts and no windfall tax or sovereign fund for our natural resources leaving these shores - just brilliant economic management. Disappointed to see Labour is as short-sighted or corrupt as the LNP. I am sick to death of hearing them gas light the Australian people about trickle-down economics.

I earn 68k per year, or I would, if I were able to work full time. As it is, I am lucky if I make 45k per year. I'd like some tax breaks, ever since they did away with claiming medical expenses as a tax deduction in 2015, I've been doing it tough.

Earning $45k means you pay less than $100 a week in tax. Just how much less tax would you like to pay?
What do you think it actually costs Government to go to the Doctor, medication etc etc.
