  • Watch real bargains found at storage lockers and auction hauls and appraised by expert Ph.D. Antiques Appraiser Dr. Lori. Dr. Lori also features #bargains and deals people found at thrift shops like #Goodwill and church sales. See their actual resell values and compare it with values found in thrift with me style of videos.
    Watch to see paintings that resell for over nineteen thousand dollars bought for just a few dollars at a flea market. Plus, Dr. Lori appraises silver and brass duckling figurines and a sterling silver bracelet. The bracelet is a piece of Benson Boyd Navajo jewelry marked BB right on it. The auction missed it! See how much money you can resell these real bargains.
    Expert Dr. Lori also highlights real bargains people found including a Steigel glass vase, Italian Tulipano plates and dishes, and a ceramic Royal Doulton chamber set with wash basin and a pitcher.
    Ask Dr. Lori to appraise your auction #hauls, storage locker finds, jewelry and glass real bargains. Attend her antiques appraisal events near you or submit photos on Dr. Lori's website for review.

    My great grandparents (on my moms side) were Italian. My grandmother had some beautiful pieces from Italy. When she passed everything was sold at auction. I was out of town going to school and could not make it. I sure wish I could have made it to that auction! I do have my grandmother's cedar chest (not from Italy) that I do cherish and love. I might have to send you photos of it because I can not find any info on it! Anyway, another informative video! Learning so much! Thank you again!

    About the chamber pot, I was at our local Re Store and they had up for a silent auction a chamber pot but had it marked as a bean pot. I told the manager you might want to change that title. I won it for 2 dollars. It is a Upper Hanley semi porcelain with lid. Transfer ware. Beautiful! Lol

    Dr Lori thank you again for all your teaching us quick story my boyfriend needed a bedroom suite at his house I was looking at a online auction that was in my town but just saw the pictures online and loved it. It's a complete set dresser and mirror, chest of drawers, 2 end tables and full size bed for $160. It did have some chips on the bottom of the legs "looked like someone hit them when vacuuming" but I loved the wood and it is heavy and solid. Well had them deliver it which added $75 to the total. On your earlier video you talked about dark wood so I decided to take a closer look at it found a burned maker mark inside a drawer that said Century Furniture so looked them up and boy was I surprised what I read about there furniture. So THANKS Dr Lori I would never have took a closer look if you hadn't talked about it!

    I found a Stig Lindberg piece (I didn't know what I had at the time, I just knew, besides other markings, it said "Sweden" on the bottom). It was strewn, on a shelf in a basement utility room with a bunch a screws and nail at an estate sale. It didn't have a price so I asked.. $4. I went to a church sale . I looked at the jewerly table. There was a white metal and red stone bracelet. The lady manning the table said it was costume jewerly. I thought it was pretty. They wanted 2 dollars for the bracelet. I gave them 5 dollars. I took it home and put it away. My husband passed away and I was going through my costume jewerly. I looked at that bracelet through a magnifying glass. It had a stamp on it of gold. I took it to a reputable jeweler and he appraised it at 1500 dollars. It was white gold and Burmese rubies. I know a man who owns a string of pawn shops that buys jewerly for his wife. He bought it for 2000 dollars for his wife for Christmas. I needed the money, bit I bought a 50 necklace at his shop. I donated 200 dollars to the church. I used the rest for groceries, car insurance and bills.

    Dr. Lori I have a production tip for you in regard to your video. It would be better to use different color, other then red, to frame the videos. The reason is because when a video has been viewed already, youtube adds a red bar across the bottom so you can see at a glance, that you've already watched it. With your red framed videos, you can't tell at a glance if it's one you've seen already.

    These new teaching formats are just great. Stories are always amazing, sometimes worth more than the objects we purchase. I have found chamber sets that have included the most useful multiple “dump” slop jar, a bail handle, and lid included. I guess emptying many full chamber pots and wash basins individually and carrying them outdoors one by one didn’t make time and motion sense. Plus, if sharing the same pot, it would be nice to have an emptied one if you happened to be next in line. Maybe, the saying, “put a lid on it”, might have come from the odoriferous characteristics of a uncovered chamber pot or slop jar. I do know where the saying, “not having a pot to pee in, or a window to throw it out” came from, my obnoxious Scottish grandfather. LOL.

    Hi Dr. Lori,
    I have a question, I was watching another video where you were discussing Oleographs. Instead of dots from an ink printer, can there be little cracking behind the clear varnish stokes? Or is that considered to be crackling from actual paint? Sorry, I hope my question makes sense. It makes better sense in my head. Lol
    Thank you!

    • @DrLoriV
      @DrLoriV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there can be little cracking behind the clear varnish layer on the surface of the canvas of an oleograph. Good question. You are really looking closely at the piece and that will help you to recognize the good paintings from the fakes.

    Hey Dr. Lori, first of all thank you for the wealth of knowledge! It has helped me more than I could ever explain. Quick question, is there a reference book that you would recommend for China makers marks? Or any reference guides for markings that are trust worthy? I am fortunate enough to live close to a university that has an amazing library I can check books out from. I’ve inherited tons of China and glass as well as vintage clothes and it is over whelming. I am trying to save up enough money to be able to do a video chat but I keep having unexpected bills pop up. Right now it’s between a video call with you or the power bill. Lol sad but true.

    • @DrLoriV
      @DrLoriV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching. There is not one book that covers everything! Experts don't rely on marks when identifying pieces. Many factors affect value. Marks are easily forged, change over time and very valuable pieces might not be marked.

      @@023joma I'm sorry, but there are not a set of books that answer that question. I have been asked this question for years. I wish there was one answer, but there isn't because most people who create this books like this don't compile extensive lists, they only feature the marks for pieces they own or are trying to sell. I hear people all the time tell me that they go out and buy a few books and then they can't find their specific marks in those books. They ask me, what now? I know the marks and can help you and others too if you like. I just need to see your pieces.
