I would love for the key cutting equipment in the magic store. You learn in lockpicking school

Okito Voodoo doll principle adapted on a key. It works great because the key has very light weight, and it doesn’t hurt if you do it correctly.

I must not be doing it correctly either. Does it not depend on "callouses" on ones hand to not hurt?

Needle files work well for making hills and valleys on key blanks. It will just take time. Or do what you stated, go to a hardware store and have it cut.

Hi David. Great review: thorough, thoughtful, informative, candid and enjoyable! I own the Voodoo doll, performed it once and said to myself "I don't need this abuse!" The only person hurt by the Voodoo doll was me! 😂 If I am going to do a key levitation I'll use a loop, spider pen, or a tarantula. Thanks again for all you do! Your friend, David

It is totally not worth it. I bought it last week. The gimmick is just glued and it came off the day after. Difficult to perform needs practice = more pain, just save your money and pick another key trick.

I was super stoked with this trick. Receiving the instructions I was a bit let down that it wasn’t cut and a dupe wasn’t provided. All my disappointment was erased when I started to perform this for kids telling them about the magic they had inside them if they believe they can see it too and then did this trick. It literally got as good or sometimes better reactions than Super Sucker. That’s a pretty tall order for kids considering with the later the get a lolly pop. Unfortunately after dangling from belt loop in a key chain it broke after just over month. Ire-glued it but think I did it wrong. Such a bummer because this was a five star review but after a couple ruined pairs of pants and a broken gimmick I’m not sure if I could suggest this.

Great review as always, David. You certainly have the gift for separating the chaff from the wheat when it comes to the over-hyped, enthusiastically endorsed, and highly promoted plentitude of magic tricks that continue to stream forth from the prolific purveyors of magic; or, to pattern a term so reflective of the Eisenhower era (which I can vaguely recall) … the “Magic Industrial Complex”, or “MIC” for short.
The MIC has become quite adept at the creation, production, and marketing of magic tricks that are targeted mostly to magic consumers, who total in the tens of thousands, rather than the relative handful of professional magicians with established repertoire. Many times, they get it right, producing wonderfully clever and entertaining effects and routines; but sometimes they get it wrong… producing mere “tricks,” whose methods reveal more than they hide and are often presented without context. Key Motion may be one of these.
In my humble opinion, The Okito Voodoo Doll (Extreme!), which is also available at Penguin, is a far better effect because it can be introduced within the context of a story line, such as voodoo (quite obviously), or… witchcraft (if you’re into that sort of thing). Likewise, I fail to find a context for Key Motion. As for getting “stuck”, I guess I would rather be stuck by a voodoo doll than a simple key - and The Voodoo Doll (Extreme!) is only $20. Of course, there’s always the Haunted Key Deluxe, which is also available from Penguin for only $15 - and, you won’t get “stuck”.
One of my favorite mystical “rising” effects (gag?) was a trick named Sleeping Pill, a trick whose time has probably come and gone. Sleeping Pill was an extremely large (two-inch long) plastic “pill” that was bifurcated, being split in the center, with the top half being one color, such as blue, and the other half being white. You would rest the pill on your outstretched palm and cause it to “wake”, much like the key or the voodoo doll, and then put it back to "sleep". Finally, you would separate the two halves, showing it to be a novelty pen and not a pill at all. You could even hand it out, with no need for a switch. Besides, it was an easy item to create a story around, especially for my geriatric (and highly drugged) friends, who would be drawn into the “effect” by seeing the prescription pill container (which fit the Sleeping Pill) that I had labeled by my willing, but suspicious, pharmacist.
Of course, there are those who will like the EDC aspect of Key Motion, which is lacking from effects like the voodoo doll and the haunted key; but for $25, I think that one should receive three keys, a gimmicked blank, a gimmicked cut key, and a matching non-gimmicked cut key. That way, you’re good to go - right out of the box; and, if you want to have it cut specifically, you can with the provided blank.
As for buying key-cutting tools and becoming a key cutter, why not buy some more equipment and become a machinist - it pays better! And who knows, you may become the next Joe Porper (or, maybe not, as there was only one Joe Porper).

Nah……not for me. The voodoo doll has a story behind why it rises. Can’t see the key rising very high unless you have hard calluses on your hand. Great review though.

Just out of principle I won't buy this. If they would have included a duplicate and cut them both I'd be all over this. For the price they are charging they could have included the duplicate and cut both and had a nice trick. As it is now they want me to overpay then take two hours trying to find a locksmith with a similar key, then pay to have both cut and hope they don't break the gimmick! What a joke!

See this is why magicians shouldnt use the term EDC. This is clearly NOT an EDC item. EDC means its durable and can be tossed in a pocket and not worry about it. The same for Flip Balm, if you EDC it, it will be ruined the first day. I dont mind uncut keys, I prefer mine to be uncut.
