  • This was a quick turnaround video for a client and i just want to show the advantages of using a correction lut to speed up your post processing. Everything here was shot in Slog3 on the Sony A74. Iso outside was 800 and inside was from 3200 to 12800. Lenses used here were the Laowa 9mm 2.8 zero D and the Sony 28 f2.
    Getting your white balance and exposure is critical to make your post production go smooth and fast. I use the Atomos Ninja V with the Phantom Luts installed. This way i can see what i am getting right away and can perform any small tweeks that you might miss with looking at slog3. I am also still exposing the slog3 at +1.7 stops btw.
    If you have to make any corrections to color or increase exposure, I do it right on the slog3 footage in premiere.
    After I have it all on my time line laid out, i make two adjustment layers above my footage. First adjustment layer above my footage i apply the Phantom Lut Slog3 to WDR pre lut. This gives you a bit more of dynamic range to your footage. I will adjust the intensity of this layer depending on the video. Above that on the other adjustment layer i apply the Phantom Neutral Lut. It does exactaly what it says, brings your slog3 to a rec709 neutral look. For real estate this is a perfect lut and if you dont have his luts i highly recommed purchasing them as all his luts are game changers.

    Great Video of a beautiful home! I saw another TH-camr which we both follow mention a lot of noise on the a7iv. I also saw on his test shots that he's using iso at around 160 000 and if I'm not mistaken he shoots in 1080. Would love to hear your take on the noise he mentioned.

      Assuming you meant 16000? I have a lot of interior shots in this video shot at 12800 and I think it’s very good. Is he shooting in slog3? If he is and not overexposing, he will get noise when he lifts the shadows. Hard to say when I don’t know his workflow. I would say this… a74 is great camera for low noise in the low iso up to 12600. Going above that is where the A7s3 shines with its 12800 dual iso. But the a74 is cleaner in the mid iso ranges. So it’s all preference and what you use it for. But I love the noise in this camera. It’s like fine grain. Where as the noise in my z6 was blocky and annoying.

      Hi Dan. Thanks for the comment. This one is the phantom neutral lut. But I find myself using them all in different videos. I shoot with a monitor with the lut in the monitor. This way I see what I am getting in real time. So I find my color being pretty spot on . But my normal process would be to shoot, then balance the color in post. Then apply any lut I am going to use. Then I fine tune it to get the grade I want for that project. Hope this helps.

      @@brianphelps2506 thanks for your fast reply. I’m still building my gear but would defo have to buy an external monitor. From what I’m hearing is does help a lot.
      Also I notice that more and more videographers are using the Phantom Neutral LUT, I usually stay away from buying LUTs or presets as in most cases I don’t like the way they look when applied so I prefer to make my own, but in video I’m still a newbie and probably will just have to invest into some of this LUTs to help me starting into shooting S Log 3 more often

      @@danchiricuta4692 yea a monitor is a hugh help. I was the same way with luts, but his are different. They are really great, I totally recommend you getting them. Get them all because the style luts are awesome also. You will also get a lut that will extend your dynamic range. you put that one with the neutral lut and adjust the dynamic range lut to your liking. Basically flattens your footage a tad. Yea I always shoot in slog3 now with these luts.

    Great Video! Do you use center metering mode by any chance ? i figure if you over expose the interior and not worry about the windows, there will no Noise on the interior...

      Thanks Alan. Correct, I meter for the inside (+1.7) then let the windows be what they are. I want that exposure because i feel like it keeps my noise low. However, I am always monitoring the image on my Atomos ninja V. With a lut programed in so I can see my final image. Then if I want to make the windows darker for a reason then I can really fine tune it with the monitor and lut programmed in.

    For how much are you overexposing your footage? I have noticed if 2.0 is not blinking it will be underexposed after I am done with color correcting(will get bunch of noise). But thats my own grading, maybe I should try these LUTs. And what's pre lut? Just a LUT on first adjustment layer, then you add another on top? Excellent vids btw, I have similar rig, a7IV and 12mm zero D.

      Hey man! Thanks for checking out my videos. So i am overexposing to 1.7 stops. When i apply the neutral lut on the footage, i usually have to bring it up a tad but not much at all. Sometimes its perfect actually. Best thing i ever did was to get these luts to make real estate edits go faster and always shoot with my atomos ninja. I have the luts programmed into the monitor so i can monitor the footage in real time with the lut on. I dont ever get a lot of noise though. Sometimes i might even be shooting at 12800 iso. Pre lut is a great one also. i will sometimes put that above my footage and then put the lut on an adjustment layer above that. If you have any other questions just ask man. i have the 12mm also. But latley im shooting in 4k60 so i have been using the laowa 9mm zero D. Its awesome and it gives me about a 13.5mm. I have it linked below, great price also, Talk soon!

      @@Baskozaa Yea its a game changer to be able to see it when shooting. You got to remember if you have windows in your shot, your camera is going to be blinking over 2.0 because of the windows, when you need to actually go brighter for the interior. That might be why your going underexposed and getting noise. Then in post you can recover those highlights some and have no noise in your interior shadows.

    I have to ask, did you shoot this in 4k60? If so, did you slow it down in post, or not? You mentioned 9mm, that's an APS-c lens, so I am presuposing 60fps, please correct me if I am wrong. Way to expose your work well man. I just picked up the A7iv, so I am looking for tips, thank you.

    • @brianphelps2506
      @brianphelps2506  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching the video! Yes, this was shot all in 4k60. Laowa 9mm is an apsc lens so its giving me a 13.5 in crop mode basically, but you are correct. Also yes, i am slowing it down to 30fps in adobe premiere. A74 is a great camera, your going to love it. In my real estate videos i usually mix it up shooting 4k60 and 4k30. I will add in some slider or tripod work in 4k30 to mix it in. Check out the last video i posted two days ago showing that. If you have any questions about anything, just ask. As far as tips go with the camera, i would just say customise it for your work. Like crop mode, assign that to a custom button. This way you can always just click it and get some extra reach when you need it. Comes in handy alot and it works in ANY mode in the A74. Talk soon and here is that link to that last video..

      @@brianphelps2506 is there any significant drop in quality with 4K 60 Practically. For Example 4k60 will crop the image turning not just the 9mm to 13.5 ( zero D makes it look amazing) but the f2.8 turns into around f4. Doesn't matter in real estate but is there a drop in picture quality when compared to full frame? Love your video. I was shying away from the APSC lenses for the same reason. @@flashedits2084 yes, there is a drop in quality. But the 4k 24 or 30 on the a74 is super sharp because of the downsampling from 7k. So you will notice the difference, but to be honest the 4k 60 is way good enough for real estate.

    Currently have a Sony A74 with sigma 24-70mm . Looking for real estate gear, was looking for a good gimbal and a lens. I was looking at the sigma 14-24 but was told there might be some distortion? Should I look at this? And what gimbal would you recommend?

    • @brianphelps2506
      @brianphelps2506  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dan. I own the 14-24 and i love it. Yes there is a little distortion but its minimal and its a great lens. Especially in lightroom, just click on the lens profile and it corrects it automatically. I use this lens for a lot of my wide real estate photography work. For video, it would be a good lens also, but id rather shoot my wide angle walkthroughs with the Laowa zero D lenses. Those lens are great for video since they have no distortion and i love manual lenses for that kinda work. Let me know if you are doing video, photos or both? @StarsPhotography before the update mine went below 800 also. But if you shoot below 800 you will not get the best color and dynamic range. Thats what those "lines" you see above and below the iso number means. 200 has those lines. I'd rather have the best image possible from the camera even if i have to throw an ND on it to get the f stop i want to shoot at.
