“Music is more powerful, when there’s less of it.” -Jóhann Jóhannsson There’s a beautiful and complex simplicity in this music. And I don’t think melancholy describes it accurately. Perhaps we feel something that we think is sadness or melancholy, but really, what we FEEL is more complex than the simple names that we prescribed as emotions. JJ - Thank you for letting us FEEL what we can’t explain with words. Rest in power.
"l think melancholy is kind of a misunderstood emotion. I don’t think it’s necessarily an unpleasant or bad emotion. There’s an emphasis, especially these days with social media, that everyone has to be this ecstatically happy person living this amazing life. Melancholy is a state that I very much enjoy being in, actually. It’s not the same as feeling sad. It’s a more complex emotion; it derives from a tragic view of the world, a tragic view of art." ~ Jóhann Jóhannsson.

Saw him in Barcelona in 2018. It was the most beautiful, heartbreaking and emotional concert I’ve ever seen in my life, truly inspiring. Two weeks after he passed away. That was devastating, I still have the tickets in my Apple wallet as a memory, don’t want to let them go.
He is truly one of the greatest composers of the modern era! Jóhann with go down in the history books as a film score pioneer. He is one of my personal favorite composers alongside some of the greats like Ennio Morricone and John Williams. You can listen to his music, close your eyes, and get lost in the uniqueness of his style. From the relaxing melodies, Erie scores, and waltz ballads, he really combined every element of sound and feeling into his work.
Same here!. I'm like...wait, he died?!. There was so much beauty in his music that is needed for my soul. 😟😢😭 Watching him and knowing that he's in the past tense is really sad. It's like watching his ghost perform such amazing music.
i wanted to get old with him. listen to his music until i am an old woman. it broke my heart when he left. i am so happy that you all here love his music as i do. it opens your heart, let you grow and let you dive deep.
I believe that we lost one of the greatest musical minds. However, I believe that I can feel and hear his depressions in his last masterpieces. His work is just amazing!
Totally agree the profound sadness is one I express in my music and I always tell people you can’t write it unless you’ve suffered that immense sadness

@@mikeg6748 Yes, I think so too, but that music enhances all the movie, gives it all that Denis Villlenueve couldn't explain with words, master soundtrack
The music industry removes the most talented. They know the artists music will become more monetarily enriching; in no way will I or do I believe this man took his own life. For him to succeeded to the echelon he got to, no one throws in the towel
Sadness on a scale that I never knew possible --- His musical contributions have not even BEGUN to be "discovered." I LOVE YOU, AND I MISS YOU, MY BROTHER.
Got you in the feels, eh? Me too. Been on repeat since I found this, and got the album on Apple Music too. I'm just gonna say it: he's the new Hans Zimmer.
I disagree. Johann is very different from Hans. Hans uses more classical roots with changing melodies and Stravinsky/Shostakovich peaks, while Olafur Arnalds, Ludovico Einaudi and Johnannson all stick to a minimal composition, inspired by Philip Glass. All while Johann could be Hans 2.0, but minimal.
Alexander, I meant that in the sense of his foray into film more than his stylistic approach; I've no doubt you're correct about the latter, but as fare as the former is concerned, I feel that Jóhann is slowly but surely beginning to surpass Hans as a film composer. I love both, a lot, but I'm so much more excited about Jóhann scoring films than I am about Hans these days. Personally love all the work he's done with Villeneuve and I can't WAIT to see where he takes BLADE RUNNER 2049.
So sad hearing him talk about his recent and upcoming projects in that central section. He would have gone on to create so much more; and his music really was improving all the time. RIP maestro.
I am deeply moved by this music. An inspiring and musical pioneer for future composers. He was far ahead of his time. The more regrettable his sudden death. What else could he have done? He has opened up a musical horizon for us to discover more and more. Thank you Johann Johannsson.

Decended grief as I learned of his passing; I was overwhelmed with reverence, admiration, and fear of his ability to inspire the emotions of listeners…to a better place, Godspeed.
One of my favorite composers to listen to during writing. His music always brings up such detailed moods and imagery for me. I very much wish we could hear any of the music he might have written for Blade Runner 2049 before they decided to go in a different direction - I don't know how far he went with that and how much he created for that film. And now I learn from this video he was writing music for Aronofsky's Mother! but I don't think any of that ended up in that film either.
Song for Europa is such a beautiful piece. I love the mysterious vocal that runs throughout. If anyone has listened to the brilliant podcast 'Death in Ice Valley' you can tell the composer of that score took a lot of inspiration from this track! R.I.P. Jóhan
