I agree with Opal just below. My first crossing of Aussie was in 1958 and my last was in 2010. All the best were before the roads were sealed. Dad taught us to get far into the bush when camping. His motto was "if they can't see you they can't hurt you" There were a few bad eggs on the road in the earlies. It's good to see folks traveling but sad to see them camping like sheep. They miss SO much.

We spent two nights twice exactly where you were parked just before Border Village. Once on the way over to Perth in March and once on the way back in May. Just a beautiful place.
Kimba has an amazing art and craft co-operative shops inside the old tractor repair shed in the main street. They had a coffee van outside that made good coffee. Even I spent a couple of hours in there ( a bloke). At Wudina we camped out at a farm stay with its own mini rock formation and a flushing toilet/shower. It is a donation to stay, situated not far from Mt Wudina? on a dirt road

Thanks for sharing guys - we are so keen to do that trip again. 2010 we did Adelaide to Coffin Bay (to see family) then across Nullarbor to Perth, Margaret River, Albany, Esperance then back to Adelaide. It was our first road trip together and we’ve got thousands of km’s under our belt since then but haven’t managed to drive across to WA again (multiple flights though). We lost all of the photos from our 2010 trip when our house was robbed in 2011 - unbacked up laptop was one of the items stolen as well as our cameras and digital video camera and memory cards, plus loads of other irreplaceable personal items with more sentimental than monetary value 😢. Your stops brought back lots of great memories and reminded us why we really need to head West again.
Thouroughly enjoyed your video. Crisscrossed the Nullarbor back in April this year from Sale Vic, while the borders were open, for the 12th time. Love it. Yes just like shaenj my last trip on the Bor was 2010 a great experience. We hit Kalgoorlie did a right turn and off up the Canning. It was for me a trip of a life time. We started our trip in Brisbane and started heading home after we had a shower and a great meal and sleep at Birdsville. Had we left it two weeks later we would have been in big dodo's big floods. [July and August 2010] Ten thousand kilometres in six weeks and three days. Thank you for sharing.
Loved the video Mick. My first Nullarbor crossing was in 1985. Have crossed approx 2 dozen times since then and I have never seen some of the areas you stopped at. I cannot wait to take my van across and visit many of the wonderful free camp sites available. Brings back some good memories. Thanks.
Finally stumbled on to a great channel. Like you, we have crossed the Nullarbor, but stayed at places which has powered sites. The last time I came over from SA in 2017 crossing the Nullarbor I played the Nullarbor golf from Ceduna to Kalgoorlie...enjoyed all the designated towns that you had to play
Just saw your video. Brings back memories of the only trip I did across and back when i worked in Perth for 6 months in the 1970,s. I had to stop at Mundrabilla roadhouse as it was over 50c that day (54 on their thermometer ) and the car was getting too hot. I wish I had a camera at the time to take a photo of it. When I drove back however in June it was only 18 and came back at night following a road train (so I didn,t hit any wildlife!! ). One day when I retire i will go back across less hurried!!

However the trip of a lifetime to me was one I missed out on in the 1970,s There is a truck operator here named Mick Travlos (he is still alive ) who was famous for opening up the express freight service from Melbourne to Perth. In the 1970,s when I worked for Kenworth he had a V12 detroit powered cabover kenworth which was well known (he had other Kenworths with Cummins engines in them ). I got a chance to go with him on a trip but sadly a mate of mine was killed in an accident and I could not go. I did not get another chance unfortunately. Thems the breaks!!
Love the video guys, I do that trip regularly in winter time except I go north past Kalgoolie to Leonora , Sandstone, Que etc and spend a couple of months gold prospecting with a detector in those areas then continue the lap to the coast then down to Perth , Albany, Esperence and back across the long road. I love it, used to tow a camper now a bit more comfort with my off road Silverliner ( which I had to modify a lot )
You missed the short drive down from Penong to a nice campspot called Cactus Beach, not free but very reasonable. I spent 6 days (on my own) across there on one of the 8 trips I have done. First one was in 1969 when there was 320 miles (515 km) of gravel road back then. You didn't even get out of the Ceduna 60k zone before you hit the "dirt" then all the way to WA Border. The road was much further north back then, sometimes up to 25k. Have fun
There was a lot that we missed as there is so much to see going over that way. I bet you would have some stories to tell about your trips while sitting around a campfire at night.

I had a Super 8 camera loaned to me during the first trip in 1969 and for my 80th Birthday, my sister had it converted to video on USB and wow, did that bring back so many memories. Unfortunately, I have lost all three of my friends who traveled with me that trip. We went to Perth for a sailing championship and beside our vehicle, there were two others, one of which towed the boat we were to sail in. That was a HR Panel van and carried 3 adults and 2 kids. Recently, the last of my friend passed on at 97 and I gave a copy of the trip to his daughter, the best part for her being her dad kissing the bitumen at the WA border. I had set this up.

What was it 40 years ago that you could not safely camp? Could you give us some examples.? I’ve been free camping, work and Leasure for nearly 40 years and have never experienced any trouble. Golden rule, don’t camp outside a pub on on Friday night, just go 20 km out of town
If you get the chance and head that way again if you haven't done them already, some good spots in SA are - Mt Wudinna (little Uluru) 2nd largest monolith in Australia; Polda Rock Recreation Reserve, Murphy's Haystacks, Gawler Rangers - Organ Pipes and Kolay Mirica Falls.
A lot of people say that there is nothing to see going over the Nullarbor, we think it is one of the best trips to do. We have done it several times now.

Thanks for your great drone footage and videos. This is what it’s like now, 2022, many years ago it was different, unsealed roads, carrying fuel and water. Streaky bay is civilisation, no chainlink fences of Ceduna, maybe there is a problem? About 5 years ago I took my mother on a “retraching” trip from Holleton, near Merredin. Her father was given a soldier settlement block, 2nd world war,along the emu fence line. This is where they drew the line between farmable, and non farmable, basically heartbreak blocks. After trying farming on unfarmable land they packed up 4 daughters in a model t ford truck and headed east. My mothers memory , at 5 years old was the Madura pass. There were camel teams that use to take vehicles up and down the pass 1938. There are picks in the roadhouse.The pass has changed. It is now a gentle gradient. If you walk out the servo 90deg and cross the highway on the lower exit you will walk up the old pass. On the left hand side going up the 70s bypass you will see a “blowhole” cement plague. This is all limestone country that used to be under the sea. Australia is tilting lower into gulf of carpentaria and the great Australian bight is getting higher

We have a Holden Colorado and diesel at the moment is anywhere above $2:00 per litre. he cost of all fuels and groceries here in Australia has escalated out of control over the last 6 months.

We filled up with water at Ceduna and then Noresman before heading to Perth. The reverse order was done on our way back. It is a matter of conserving the water to suite the carrying capacity at the time. There was limited to no water available to refill on the Nullarbor.
Better than filling up at the BP, there is a self serve tank just after passing the airport on the way into Ceduna from the east, much cheaper, but no roadhouse facilities. Swipe card required. Fuel used to be cheaper at the Eucla Motel than at Border Village, but sure if that is still the case.
Hi mick, Another great video. We have just got home after doing the round trip from NSW looking at the wild flowers.. A comment, I noticed that nearly all of the transport use the cab over prime movers. Is this coincidence or a perticular reasoon, maybe due to the mainly flat road? As soon as we crossed back into NSW it appeared that the long nose took over on all routes. also noted was NSW has the worst roads! SA & WA were great all over. Its a pity that we have the most population and can't seem t have a decent road system.
Thanks Ross, sorry but I cant really answer your question regarding cab overs. I think most states have their own fair share of road issues. I am assuming that you did the W.A. wildflowers, we did them back in the early 2,000's, was very pretty to see.

Perhaps more information may be of some help to you Jeff. I removed the spring sets and took them into a suspension repair shop and ask for the spring height be reset and an additional leaf be fitted for heavy duty towing. It has made a huge difference to the back of the Colorado and the way it rides.
@@jeffgibson7528 the cost for the springs to be upgraded was $475.00 as I supplied the labour to remove and refit the springs. It did raise the ride height noticeably. From the ground to the bottom leading edge of the rear bumper bar the height is 51cm.
Very nice clip just bit concern about the dangers of free camping compared with secured proper caravan parks . Love to travel around in a caravan have done a lot of camping in secured parks and stayed in motels and hotels .Looking to purchase a van and travel with my Mrs around . Also is it difficult to clean or dump the toilet waste .
Everyone will have their own ideas about the dangers of free camping compared to Caravan Park security. We have never seen a safety incident while free camping but we have had the people next to us in a Caravan Park robbed during the night. We go with our gut feeling when we free camp, if it doesn't feel right when you pull up, then don't stop there, move on. Toilets on the modern day caravan are very easy to clean and empty. Sometimes the mess left at the dump area by others isn't very nice although this is a rare.
In the last 10 months I’ve lost in order,, Mum 64, Pop 84, Dad 65, sister 50. And lost home ownership plus most possessions. Your video is like a dream I need to feel for myself. I can see myself not coming back if someone needs a boilermaker along the way. Had to say this, just have to tell someone. Thanks . Take care .

Except for the day in Darwin where we are waiting on trailers, one of us is working all of the time for the 24 hours of each day. This excluded loading and unloading times between Adelaide and Darwin. The trip is basically non stop.
Great video, Myself, My Parents and My Partner and 2 Dogs Black Lab and Chocolate Lab are planning this trip in 2027 or 2028 and do you know what are the best places to stay overnight at on the Nullarbor and where are the best places to fill up the caravan with water and the car with fuel. What are the best places to see and stay at in Busselton, Pemberton, Albany, Esperance, Nullarbor, Yorke Peninsula, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland since we have got dogs. We Have got a 2010 Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series GXL Model and it has been fitted with a Bullbar, Snorkel, Roof Rack (Kayak Carrier), Awning, Towing Mirrors, UHF Radio and Tow Bar on it and we are pulling a 2.7 Ton Caravan Behind us. Do you know if we would be overweight with all the accessories I have mentioned above, the caravan and 4 People and 2 Dogs in the Car. How Many Months do you think we should spend travelling across the Nullarbor and up to Cairns for.

@@truthseeker7322 You can still do that, for tens of thousands of Ks. Problem is most ppl wont drive off a road thats not on ggl maps, or actually walk and camp. People are frightened to be by themselves it seems. You might be frightened to pull up and go to sleep, but no one I know is. We went camping last week and the closest person to us was in the ISS, 400k above our heads.
@@1mmickk most people don't have the rig to go out back and yes like you said they won't go off road or the time to go outback. Afraid bhahahahahaha thinking you been clutching too many short straws. Nothing out there too do but look at endless red dirt. Far more superior places to go camping in Australia.
On our return to Adelaide we used the Honda more than we normally would have as I had a medical issue and required heating to reduce the pain I was in. We do have a gas heater fitted but there was an electrical issue with it on this trip. We would normally not use a generator at all, in fact we haven't used it since that trip.

My problem is I don't want to be anywhere near other people. I want to be completely alone, not being able to see or hear anyone. Can you just park off road wherever you feel like it in an isolated spot, that isn't a designated camping spot where others are also going to visit?
Heading across the Nullarbor is no longer as isolated as it once was many years ago with a lot of travelers now doing it. It would be difficult to find places to camp where others would not be around if using dedicated rest areas. There is no reason why you can't camp anywhere heading across should you see a location that you would like to stop at. In saying that, a lot of people feel safe in numbers so if they see another camper already set up for the night then they may want to camp near you just to feel safe.

Recently, the last of my friend passed on at 97 and I gave a copy of the trip to his daughter, the best part for her being her dad kissing the bitumen at the WA border. I had set this up.

I did this trip 40 years ago. In those days there is no way you could safely free camp on the Nullarbor. looks like things have changed a lot. great video

What was it 40 years ago that you could not safely camp? Could you give us some examples.? I’ve been free camping, work and Leasure for nearly 40 years and have never experienced any trouble. Golden rule, don’t camp outside a pub on on Friday night, just go 20 km out of town

If you get the chance and head that way again if you haven't done them already, some good spots in SA are - Mt Wudinna (little Uluru) 2nd largest monolith in Australia; Polda Rock Recreation Reserve, Murphy's Haystacks, Gawler Rangers - Organ Pipes and Kolay Mirica Falls.

A lot of people say that there is nothing to see going over the Nullarbor, we think it is one of the best trips to do. We have done it several times now.

Thanks for your great drone footage and videos. This is what it’s like now, 2022, many years ago it was different, unsealed roads, carrying fuel and water. Streaky bay is civilisation, no chainlink fences of Ceduna, maybe there is a problem? About 5 years ago I took my mother on a “retraching” trip from Holleton, near Merredin. Her father was given a soldier settlement block, 2nd world war,along the emu fence line. This is where they drew the line between farmable, and non farmable, basically heartbreak blocks. After trying farming on unfarmable land they packed up 4 daughters in a model t ford truck and headed east. My mothers memory , at 5 years old was the Madura pass. There were camel teams that use to take vehicles up and down the pass 1938. There are picks in the roadhouse.The pass has changed. It is now a gentle gradient. If you walk out the servo 90deg and cross the highway on the lower exit you will walk up the old pass. On the left hand side going up the 70s bypass you will see a “blowhole” cement plague. This is all limestone country that used to be under the sea. Australia is tilting lower into gulf of carpentaria and the great Australian bight is getting higher

We have a Holden Colorado and diesel at the moment is anywhere above $2:00 per litre. he cost of all fuels and groceries here in Australia has escalated out of control over the last 6 months.

We filled up with water at Ceduna and then Noresman before heading to Perth. The reverse order was done on our way back. It is a matter of conserving the water to suite the carrying capacity at the time. There was limited to no water available to refill on the Nullarbor.
We carried small container of grey water to wash down the toilet cassette when none available.
Good idea, several options to get around it.👍
Better than filling up at the BP, there is a self serve tank just after passing the airport on the way into Ceduna from the east, much cheaper, but no roadhouse facilities. Swipe card required. Fuel used to be cheaper at the Eucla Motel than at Border Village, but sure if that is still the case.
We have always found fuel to be cheaper at Eucla than Border Village.
Hi mick, Another great video. We have just got home after doing the round trip from NSW looking at the wild flowers.. A comment, I noticed that nearly all of the transport use the cab over prime movers. Is this coincidence or a perticular reasoon, maybe due to the mainly flat road? As soon as we crossed back into NSW it appeared that the long nose took over on all routes. also noted was NSW has the worst roads! SA & WA were great all over. Its a pity that we have the most population and can't seem t have a decent road system.
Thanks Ross, sorry but I cant really answer your question regarding cab overs. I think most states have their own fair share of road issues. I am assuming that you did the W.A. wildflowers, we did them back in the early 2,000's, was very pretty to see.

There is 560 watts on the van plus another 150 watts on our tow vehicle that we can add to it on shade covered days if needed.

It would depend on the individuals taste Max. September would have the nicest weather but we prefer the winter months.

I have had the rear spring packs upgraded in the Colorado. Enjoy your trip around Australia.
Perhaps more information may be of some help to you Jeff. I removed the spring sets and took them into a suspension repair shop and ask for the spring height be reset and an additional leaf be fitted for heavy duty towing. It has made a huge difference to the back of the Colorado and the way it rides.

@@jeffgibson7528 the cost for the springs to be upgraded was $475.00 as I supplied the labour to remove and refit the springs. It did raise the ride height noticeably. From the ground to the bottom leading edge of the rear bumper bar the height is 51cm.
Very nice clip just bit concern about the dangers of free camping compared with secured proper caravan parks . Love to travel around in a caravan have done a lot of camping in secured parks and stayed in motels and hotels .Looking to purchase a van and travel with my Mrs around . Also is it difficult to clean or dump the toilet waste .
Everyone will have their own ideas about the dangers of free camping compared to Caravan Park security. We have never seen a safety incident while free camping but we have had the people next to us in a Caravan Park robbed during the night. We go with our gut feeling when we free camp, if it doesn't feel right when you pull up, then don't stop there, move on. Toilets on the modern day caravan are very easy to clean and empty. Sometimes the mess left at the dump area by others isn't very nice although this is a rare.

Except for the day in Darwin where we are waiting on trailers, one of us is working all of the time for the 24 hours of each day. This excluded loading and unloading times between Adelaide and Darwin. The trip is basically non stop.
Great video, Myself, My Parents and My Partner and 2 Dogs Black Lab and Chocolate Lab are planning this trip in 2027 or 2028 and do you know what are the best places to stay overnight at on the Nullarbor and where are the best places to fill up the caravan with water and the car with fuel. What are the best places to see and stay at in Busselton, Pemberton, Albany, Esperance, Nullarbor, Yorke Peninsula, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland since we have got dogs. We Have got a 2010 Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series GXL Model and it has been fitted with a Bullbar, Snorkel, Roof Rack (Kayak Carrier), Awning, Towing Mirrors, UHF Radio and Tow Bar on it and we are pulling a 2.7 Ton Caravan Behind us. Do you know if we would be overweight with all the accessories I have mentioned above, the caravan and 4 People and 2 Dogs in the Car. How Many Months do you think we should spend travelling across the Nullarbor and up to Cairns for.

People are frightened to be by themselves it seems. You might be frightened to pull up and go to sleep, but no one I know is. We went camping last week and the closest person to us was in the ISS, 400k above our heads.

Being from Canada do you have a map of you trip?
If you bring up Google Maps & put in Australia and put in Adelaide to Darwin you will get the trip on the map that way.
Did you use the Honda very much ?
On our return to Adelaide we used the Honda more than we normally would have as I had a medical issue and required heating to reduce the pain I was in. We do have a gas heater fitted but there was an electrical issue with it on this trip.
We would normally not use a generator at all, in fact we haven't used it since that trip.

Always adventurous for the first timer, we could do it more often if only we had the time.
My problem is I don't want to be anywhere near other people. I want to be completely alone, not being able to see or hear anyone. Can you just park off road wherever you feel like it in an isolated spot, that isn't a designated camping spot where others are also going to visit?
Heading across the Nullarbor is no longer as isolated as it once was many years ago with a lot of travelers now doing it. It would be difficult to find places to camp where others would not be around if using dedicated rest areas.
There is no reason why you can't camp anywhere heading across should you see a location that you would like to stop at. In saying that, a lot of people feel safe in numbers so if they see another camper already set up for the night then they may want to camp near you just to feel safe.
Great video thanks for making it - there is something you could do to make it a little more enjoyable if you’d like my opinion, but still good all the same 👌

You can keep the music running in the background just got to ramp it down as you bring in the narration, it will make the viewing more comfortable 👍
