Finland has the highest percentage of metal bands of any country. It's also rated as the number one happiest place to live. Coincidence? I think not. There are 42 metal bands per every 100,000 people there, so if you figure 4 people per band that means that 1 out of every 595 people there are in metal bands!

Very familiar with that metal stereotype you've mentioned, I get that very response when I tell someone I like metal. They have a certain predisposition, not knowing there's stuff out there like this. There's so much variety within metal. And absolutely, there's something in the Finnish water I think. Many, many great groups hail from those lands. I'd add Amorphis - The Bee to the list for that very reason.

The guitarrist on the right side, Anton. He had the band Battle Beast before he start this band. Check up Battle Beast - Black Ninja and listen to Noora ..... she's one of the best female singer. Great band.

Let me school you a bit on the whole genre of Metal, if you'll let me. Metal came about in the 70s, but was quite tame by today's standards, in fact, most of 70s Metal would be lucky to be called Rock today. Rock and it's heavier cousin Metal came out of an Era that was seeing (and hearing) music that still had roots from the Big Band and Swing Era of World War II. You had Bebop, 50s Rock, Acid Rock from the 60s, Disco and Southern Rock in the 70s. When KISS, Black Sabbath, and a handful of other 70s Rock/Metal bands put out their music, it kind of shocked the system. The younger generations loved it and their parents were repulsed by it, giving the genre a kind of a rebellious feeling to it. So by the time the 80s rolled around, the genre really started taking off, and youth world wide started to get into it and Metal festivals started popping up. Hair/Glam Metal started to become big in the Mid 80s, along with a real heavier Metal called Thrash Metal, that was characterized by a chugging riff, over a more gallopy one which can be found in Power Metal which became popular in the 90s. And by gallopy, I literally mean the beat and background riffs sound like horses galloping. Not all songs within each subgenre fall into those style of rhythms of course, but when you take the work of an artist as a whole, you can pigeon hole where they belong. There's also Progressive Metal, which just like Progressive Rock, has many different change ups of rhythm and riffs throughout the songs. Death Metal, and its darker cousin Black Metal, are usually classified by their fast riffs, beats, and harsh guttural vocals. Each can actually be quite Progressive too. In fact, I will only tolerate those kinds of bands if there's enough Progressive elements in their songs to keep them interesting. I'm not a fan of the kind of bands that just blast out really fast paced songs with guttural vocals that you can't understand at all, just for the sake of making music. That's not music to me. That's just noise. And speaking of which, in the 80s, when the whole genre of Metal was taking off, it was such shock to the public, that they actually had Congressional hearings over it, and in an infamous appearance e by Dee Schneider of Twisted Sister (It's on You Tube, look it up, he absolutely roasted Congress in a surprising (to them) calm and well spoken manner that made them look foolish. Because of all of this, Metal kind of got a bad rap in the 80s, for being "Devil Music" and all that nonsense. Therefore it didn't gain the widespread popularity it should have or could have gotten had it not had that stigma attached to it. Which is ashame because for people like you, who have only been exposed to pop and Country music your entire life, you've missed out on a LOT of great music just because it has electric and distorted guitars in it. I got into Metal in 1986, and despite what my musically inclined mother thought of it, I loved it, and understood the brilliancy of it all. I like to say that I listen to Metal exclusively, but that's not exactly true because i know the roots of the genre, I can listen to and enjoy music that has elements of Metal in them. The northern European band, Heilung (healing in German), an ancient Germanic and Nordic Tribal band plays what is considered ancient tribal music, and even though they mostly use percussion instruments, it's as Metal as anything else you'll see. Then there's Symphonic Metal which started to become popular in the late 90s, and that incorporates lots of Keyboards, choir-like vocals, and even full orchestral parts. Nightwish is the premier Symphonic Metal band, and i would recommend the 20 minute epic "The Greatest Show on Earth" to get a taste of that genre, preferably the live 2015 Tamperre performance. But anyway, I guess my final point is that because Metal now has a roughly 40 to 45 year history behind it, and so many subgenres, that it can now reach a much broader audience than it could back in the 80s, when there was only 3, maybe 4 subgenres. So my advice to you is to embrace it and fall down the Metal rabbit hole with no parachute. Because you're gonna love it.

Dude, Metal is REAL music. There's so many subgenres that there's something for everybody. And when you learn that Metal is just the merging of Classical Music and The Blues, then you'll appreciate it more. Everything aside from the Brutal Death Metal stuff, which even this 35 year long Metalhead hates, the instrumentals are the Classical Music part, and the lyrics are The Blues part. But just performed in a more aggressive way.

Beast in Black - Beast In Black is pretty neat song as well! Similar 1980 - 1990 vibes for modern day -> Battle Beast - Black Ninja, Noora Louhimo - Still Loving You (cover), Noora Louhimo - Sweet Child O' Mine (cover) or Battle Beast - Wild child (cover). Noora Louhimo is lead singer in Battle Beast and these two bands have some connections as well. For example founder of Beast in Black (Anton Kabanen) was originally fired from Battle Beast because of disagreements. Of course you got to see also that Ghost Love Score (Cover) by Yannis Papadopoulos (lead singer of Beast in Black).
