  • A short review of the low-cost Netgear GS110EMX managed switch with 2 10GbE ports and 8 1GbE ports. This is a low-cost multi-gigabit switch that provides a good entry point into 10GbE and has full support for VLANs. In this short review, we will cover the hardware and walk through setting up the devices as well as a VLAN.

    Great info. I purchased the QNAP QSW-308-1C 10GbE Switch because I didn't need a managed switch and I needed 3 10G ports and I wanted to use fiber also. This Netgear switch seems like a good buy, I will consider it, if I ever want to try out a low cost managed switch.

      I also have all 4 for of the QNAP models and really like their management interface, but the Netgear is just much less money. Thanks for the feedback.

    appareciate the part in the video u taught how to setup the vlan. specifically @6:27 you point out that vlan1 is still used for port 10 because that is the uplink.
    when i first started i was clueless about setting these vlans. nice to see some tips for this for the netgear switches. depending on which brand of switch you get, though some parts are still generally applicable, their UI is different so it's done differently in some regards.

    Can I setup two different configurations from two different routes and switch between the configurations? I have two ISPs, one is my primary and the other is the back. I'd like to be able to flip from one to the other without recabling everything.

    • @MikeFaucher

      Not with this switch. This has to be a function of your router. Look and the Unifi equipment as they make that very simple.

    Do you have to use a VLAN supported router? Can this switch be used to create VLANs with a standrad router?

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you can use the switch in a standard configuration but VLANs are created from your router and can't be used with a supported router. If you want to use VLANs, you will have to most likely upgrade your router. Great question.

    Hi, Do you have any video explaining how to create two vlans, one with internet access and the other without internet access?

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a couple that shows VLANs and another coming out in two weeks but they cover VLANs in general not one with and one without internet. The process is exactly the except of one critical piece and that is to block that VLAN/subnet in your firewall by not allowing (blocking) traffic in your firewall. I like the idea though and will add that to a future video.

    Hello sorry to be ignorant but can I link aggregate my gigabit internet if I plug 2 1g ports into my router. I know I can get more than gigabit but my router has only 1g ports. I'm hoping I can use lacp to aggregate the connection to pull more out of my router.

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can only get more if both your switches and your router/device will support it but it will not a true additive. LAGs only work when there are multiple requests. If you are going to increase you internet speed, get a 2.5GbE switch as that will truly add speed.

    Any recommendations for a switch with poe scheduling? Does that exist?

    • @d00dEEE
      @d00dEEE 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had never thought about it until you asked, so searched and apparently it is a thing ("duh" on my part, seems like it would be very useful). In fact, the Zyxel PoE switches (mentioned in the comment by @Pedro Brigham) appear to have scheduling as a standard feature (I searched for your term, "poe scheduling", and Zyxel was in the first three).

    • @AinzOoalG0wn
      @AinzOoalG0wn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      not sure about poe scheduling but netgear probly has some POE switches, just go to their site and browse. The more features/ports u want, the more u have to pay though. but they got a whole assortment of switches that will match your requirements.
      on the product page for the switch, just check the features to confirm if it has poe scheduling or not.

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As mentioned by @d00dEEE, Zyxel switches do have it and some of the Engenius switches as well as many Netgears. I am sure there many others as well. This does not work for me but it is a good idea.

    by the way i may need to buy a 2.5gbe addon, becauz of the motherboard having a faulty 2.5gbe nic. i know the qnap 2.5gbe addon is problem free on that end but shipping cost sux. do u know any other 2.5gbe addon which does not have the issue of the port constantly reseting and dropping out randomly over time over and over? this is an issue im getting on realtek nic on the motherboard. some old v1s for intel 2.5gbes also had this issue.

    I have a 1000 Mbit/s internet connection. If I have occupied both 10G ports on my GS110EMX switch, one as an uplink to the 2.5G port of my router, the second to the 10G port of my workstation, then I get 1060 MBit/s downstream in the Ookla speed test. With all other devices on the 1G ports, I only get 400 -500 MBit/s in the Ookla speed test. If I change the uplink to one of the 1G ports, I have 960 Mbit/s on all devices. This deviation does not exist in the home network itself.

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If by uplink you mean one of your router ports, then there may be an issue with the 2.5G port negotiating properly with the 10G port of this switch. Moving everything over solves your issues as everything is negotiated properly. Hard to say network cards are used in routers but my guess is that it is a negotiation issue. Since a 1G connection does not utilize the speed of a 2,5g, I would stick with the 1G. Not a great answer but without seeing all the connections and hardware, I can't think of anything else. I recently had an issue with a 10G card not even running at 1G and had to replace the card with a different brand of card and this was on a different switch.

    • @danieleichler
      @danieleichler 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the assessment. It is definitely correct because the problem appears to be the router port. I connected my router's 2.5G port directly to a 10G Intel network card on my workstation to see how the devices negotiate. In short, I have to manually select the 2.5G full duplex, otherwise it stays at 1G.
