As soon as I heard this theme, I knew I would love this game. Before I started making my character I just waited on the screen and listened to the music.
It's definitely one of the best- my favorite is the one that plays after you beat the game, "Nameless Song", along with a few battle themes. Most notably Great Grey Wolf Sif's theme.
When MW3 had reached the end of its peak, I remember buying this after a friend recommended it to me. One of the best decisions I've ever made. The thousands of hours spent playing this can never be brought back, but it was not a waste. Truly a one of a kind game that will forever stand the testament of time in gaming history.
***** I happy to report I've arrived in Anor Londo ( Sorry for the late asf reply lol) However i'm afraid i've not really explored most of the ingame world, like the noob I am. And almost every boss i've encounterd has had me require help from A.I summons, which many people on the internet seem to do themselves so I don't feel to bad. My class is a Knight(since i haven't really thought of reading a guide), Nevertheless going through the campaign has felt all the more satisfying.
When I heard this for the first time, I immediately realized that this game would be one of the best ever. Surely, I wasn't disappointed.. I mean who can forget the Moonlight butterfly, Sif and, of course, Ornstein and Smough fights. How easily one could miss the Great Hollow and subsequently the tranquility of the Ash Lake..
Agreed. I loved Dark Souls 3 and how dark it was, but the atmoshpere of Dark Souls 1 had something unreal, that just can't be explained, only listened to.
DKS3 did NOT feel gloomy. lol Dark Souls 2 did, especially Demon's Souls. DKS3 felt hot-headed and monotone throughout the entire game, hence the theme of the game, "embers".
But there is peace in this game. The intensity of the trials it put you through made each bonfire respite and pause to take in a beautiful view that much more meaningful.
Yeah I love those games too, Resident evil 1 and 2 were brilliant game! They should do a remake of Resident evil 2 BTW! Bring it up to modern standards but keep all the atmosphere!
I can't really explain it but this song always brings tears to my eyes, there's something about the soothing contemplative melody being mixed with the celestial synth simultaneously being brought down to Earth by the gongs of the bells, it just hits so hard. And yes, as others have pointed out, I can hear major influences on this track from the Resident Evil save room themes. Such a masterpiece.
It's childhood beckoning. At home, turning your Playstation on, block TV, playing a game you couldn't even comprehend if it was good or not, you just simply played it. The journey to the end of the game. The music. The sounds of you selecting menus.
This game along with its music probably had more impact on me than any other game besides FF7 and of course, Resident Evil 2 when I was a child. Maybe the similarities between this song and RE's music is why I connected with it so much.
Its weird this isn't my favorite souls but I always miss the game so much for some reason. Whenever I play it it doesn't feel the same. It genuinely hurts, this game is so special to me.

Just started playing Dark Souls, after spending over 200 hrs on Bloodborne. I heard this song and immediately knew I was about to spend 200hrs in another souls game xD
I remember first encountering this game at a random internet cafe 8 years ago. I was in my last year of high school with some of my classmates. We were all playing counterstrike. I eventually got bored of it and decided to check out what other games the cafe had. As you hover each game, its respective main theme would play. I remember hovering over Dark Souls 1 and this beautiful song played. I was completely enchanted and mesmerized, but the feeling wasn't weird or anything; it felt like home. It's as if I was destined to encounter this game (and eventually the rest of this brilliant series of games.) I'll never forget that cold yet warm morning.

@@glorykiller998 I agree, games are art. Why wouldn't they be... In many ways, come to think of it, they're the largest combination of artistic expression. You have artwork and graphic design, the interactivity element including martial art the character may display, and the music... Is good

I get paying no mind to this when you didn't have a connection to it yet, but why would you even think "what's with the dumb music"? I mean, even out of context, it sounds fine and appropriate for a character creation menu.
Dude I was so dumb at the time I didn't even knew how to get to the burg, I thought the way to go was to kill the skeletons until a friend told me there were some stairs I had to climb and that the enemies were easier.
Not only is the game extremely difficult and beautiful at the same time, but the music too is both beautiful to listen to and somewhat "difficult": it's not the same old 4/4, instead it adds a little shift in the rhythm with the 5/4. Very well done.
Well, if you refer to each harp note in the consistent arpeggiation pattern as the reference beat for the meter denominator it would actually have to be 9/8 where each phrase cycles, because those are eighth note steps relative to the tempo. 9/4 also works if you want to count beats at half the rate of the harp tones (at the actual tempo, which is a bit less than 120 quarter note beats per minute) but it's tricky because the downbeat gets displaced to the upbeat relative to the pattern's feel after the fifth quarter note of the measure because of the odd number of eighth notes in the actual pattern.
I know, I wrote a music a piece with the 5+4 scheme and thought of it as 9 on 8, but then people immediately think of 3+3+3 and get confused, so maybe writing 9/4 is the better way... I'm actually conflicted about whether to use the 9/8 or 9/4, one seems somewhat more correct, the other more "immediately understandable".
As someone who finished this game several times, this song always gives the feeling of being inside a mother's womb. At first it's very peaceful but the music gets gradually tense as it comes to the ending (the character's birth) and the bell tolls adding to the tension. One small detail that I just realized about this song is that you hear the bells 9 times during one loop (I'm stating this because it's an extended version of the original ost and it plays twice here). I find this very interesting as the sound of the bells feel so uncomfortable like they are a countdown for your character to face the dark, unforgiving world of dark souls. And as everybody knows a baby has to stay 9 months inside their mother's womb. I don't necessarily believe this was intentional by the composers yet it's such a cool detail that I didn't see anyone else talk about so I had to write this.
I came here so I could use it for a surreal horror tabletop game I have been working on for months. It's a little inspired by Dark Souls. It's not super hard or punishing, but they can lose currency in the same way players can lose souls. So in that sense players can sort of "lose everything", but I don't expect them to die very often. But in some scenarios death can inadvertently lead to new areas since their bodies are carried away and reassembled somewhere safer, the beginning involves a player trying to struggle out of a wheelchair (they're bound by barbed wire) as it slowly slides backwards into a glowing red abyss. If the player willingly jumps in afterwards though, they'll die, but nanobots will carry their body to a unique hidden area that's otherwise hard to find, which can also lead to an in accessed area which also has a door that only opens from one side ala dark souls (a chair propped against a knob prevents access to a stairwell from one side until its pulled out.
I have the Darksign tattooed on my back between my shoulder blades. It beckons me whenever I listen to this, a slightly painful yet soothing burn. It reminds me that should I ever die, there will always be a bonfire waiting for me.
I couldn't agree more. Words cannot describe the feels this song evokes in me. I feel sad, as the violin and chimes seem to resonate a finality, like the embers of a dying fire, a conclusion has been reached, however not in your favor. The end of an era, and submission into darkness. But, there is a faint glimmer of hope, as streams of light pierce the darkness of your cell in the Undead Asylum, and there is a chance that maybe, just maybe, you can defeat the forces of darkness and restore hope to a world where none remains. You are all that stands in the way of all that is good in the world that remains, and those who seek to destroy what is left. If any of that even makes any sense
Fuck I just saw the alternative cut scene before fighting the Great Grey Wolf Sif while listening to this and now i'm tearing up. Can someone hand me a tissue?
"God damnit! Son of a--ugh! I swear to god, I hate this fu--" "Honey? What's wrong?' "I'm playing Dark Souls, and I'm stuck." "What part are you on?" "The character creation screen."
Yah I think that dark souls kept a sense of wonder and mystery that just kept you hooked throughout the game. I wish dark souls 3 would've used that a little more
Dark Souls 3 is such a disappointment IMO. DS2 was the last souls game I played and it felt like a much better version of 3, and I played Scholar despite everyone saying to play Vanilla. Really the only hard areas was Cave of the Undead and Frozen Outskirts. Otherwise it was a blast to play and was far more engaging and refreshing than DS3 by a very large margin.
If we can get one more souls game with the music and storytelling from Dark Souls 1, the PvP from Dark souls 2, and the PvE gameplay and boss fight experience from Dark Souls 3, it would be one of the best games ever created.
It's a great song to have in the background while drawing, it gives everything this majestic feel and inspires you to be mindful of details and take your time It really helps my creative process
God, how I wish I could put words to this game, how I wish I could even wrap ly head around it. I've been playing this game since I was very young, and to make anything that could capture what this game is like after years of playing seems simply impossible. Just the nature of that fact inspires me in some strange way. I just love this game man. I'd easily say this is the best game of all time by a landslide.
Alas, they knew not what dwelled beneath the scared visage, the weathered plate he adorned. The etchings of blade and bone alike scrawled themselves a tale of struggle and pain across the breast. Boots scuffed and gloves worn from a tireless journey, shield scorched black from vile flames and belt loose from countless tools and trinkets passing through it's loops. His helmet, cold, still, and stalwart, acts as a visage for him, an identity made of steel, known only as what he wears. This Knight, this traveling soul, despite his journey, his forging through fire and despair, is reprised by such a beautiful Melody. One of calm and stoicism. It seems to suit him well.
I don't necessarily like this game or any of these games but when I was making my character here, I just had a thousand mile stare from this song. Puts you in a trance state.
Gosh, this game is a huge piece of history and I hope it remains that way. I'm 14 and I first started playing early 2019 and I hope the new generations continue to play this game. Something about Dark Souls is very different than newer games, and it seems that a lot of newer games are slowly loosing their charm.
this reminds me of the first time I played dark souls. this theme made it feel so magical. don't laugh at me if I cry from nostalgia. I just want to replay all those good memories
I love this song. So beautiful but also kind of haunting and dream like. Never thought character creation music would be my favorite track in a dark fantasy game.
I just wanted to replay these wow moments in this game again. But I realized that's never going to happen. This is why Nostalgia exists. Note, I'm not saying DaSII or DaSIII are bad games they're not. Just feels like DaS had some vision to pursue while the others are just trying to cash in on the coattails of this original vision. With the DLC for DaSIII dropping tomorrow I really hope that it adds a bit more of the old magic with a new flair.
I always thought this theme was so out of place in Dark Souls. It's at first warm, calm and relaxing. It almost feels like your character is still in the world outside Lordran or the Asylum, living in the bliss of life on the outside. Then it gains intensity over time, feeling more epic and potent. Your choices of your character are no longer freeform, but weighty. I suspect this is since most players will spend a while messing with their character's appearance, and the music is timed to increase in intensity as you finalize the more important decisions of your starting items and class.
This theme is magic and otherworldly. Timeless. Dark Souls is a true masterpiece of a game in an era of gaming corrupted by corporate influence. The atmosphere in Dark Souls is magical and the world design was so well crafted by the developers. It's a shame the sequels were disappointing to a degree but still okay. FromSoftware was smart and capitalized quickly knowing the sequels would sell regardless of whether they were great or not because of the success of the original Dark Souls, the masterpiece. It's all about the profit I guess...
dark souls is one of those games that make you reflect on it for weeks, on everything you go through in the game, on the fights, the monsters, the bosses, but I think that the main reflection that this game gives us is the reason, it's the meaning of our struggles, why do we fight our own struggles? for glory, for happiness, for peace, or for simply fighting to live? only you can answer these questions, and I like that. many find the story of the game confusing, but I think the story of this game is formed by the player's interpretations and reflections about the world, the monsters, and companions that we make during the game.
First time i heard that music, back in 2011, i never thought i was about to get my ass kicked over and over again, and if i could go back in time, i would. Good times...
*Heres a trailer idea for my most wanted! The Chosen Undead!* Trailer: The trailer starts off in a open area littered with ruins of a castle, Sephiroth and Cloud are there fighting, Sephiroth manages to defeat Cloud only for Hero (Dragon Quest) to come take his place and fight Sephiroth, only to also lose, then as Sephiroth goes for the killing blow, a unknown silhoutte suddenly appears and slices Sephiroth, he collapses and suddenly from his Unconcious body, rises up a small white flame, as an armored hand grabs it, clenches their fist and the flame disappears into their body, the screen pans up into a familar character. CHOSEN UNDEAD LINKS SMASH! Stage Entrance: He rises from a bonfire / A summon sign appears and the character rises from it. Gimmick: Like Shulk, they can change weapons at will, a sword for a staff / talisman to shoot magic / miracles. Potentially weight gimmick, unlike any fighter, they dont become more vulnerable if they roll too much, instead thats replaced by a weight system. light roll = most i-frames med roll = mid-i-frames heavy roll = very little i-frames. If they have a shield, they can perfect shield to do a parry and counteract, like a counter. Final Smash(s): The victim gets thrown into a room full of dark souls enemies and bosses where they get ambushed / A bunch of memorable NPC's all attack at once (like Hero) / The victim accidently Links the fire and gets burned as a wave of fire comes for them. Stage: Lordran The stage starts off at the massive cathedral where you fight Ornstein and Smough in Anor Londo, then shifting to Firelink Shrine then it would shift to Kiln of the first flame, then it would go to Sens Fortress and loop. Assist Trophy: Solaire, he would come and help you fight off your enemies. Spirits: Gwyn, Iron Tarkus, Solaire, Crestfallen Knight, Firekeepers, Gwyndolin, Priscilla, Artorias, Sif, Etc. Music: since Dark Souls is mostly atmospheric music, it would most likely be boss music, gwyns theme and etc. thats all for now!

"Be careful out there. Neither of us want to see you go hollow."
Or as I like to call it, "The Calm Before the Storm of Death"
Like they're saying "Please, enjoy this relaxing music before you die horribly a thousand times"
Beat this game for the first time last night.. listening to this on repeat to cope with the post game depression
Man this theme and resident evils safe rooms really know how to chill you out for a moment
I can't do this...
I did it!
+Aftershock WG Praise the Sun!
"God damnit! Son of a--ugh! I swear to god, I hate this fu--"
"Honey? What's wrong?'
"I'm playing Dark Souls, and I'm stuck."
"What part are you on?"
"The character creation screen."
Don't you dare go hollow, friend.
You can. You just have to see that having that awful feeling is not the end of the world. It's just part of the journey
Yah I think that dark souls kept a sense of wonder and mystery that just kept you hooked throughout the game. I wish dark souls 3 would've used that a little more
grey area x20
sometimes grey with a tint of yellow
I think it really only works once. But man...
Dark Souls 3 is such a disappointment IMO.
DS2 was the last souls game I played and it felt like a much better version of 3, and I played Scholar despite everyone saying to play Vanilla.
Really the only hard areas was Cave of the Undead and Frozen Outskirts. Otherwise it was a blast to play and was far more engaging and refreshing than DS3 by a very large margin.
since the days of Dark Souls, I still sing this song all the day until now
Dark Souls is still one of the greatest games of all time.
Heard this song so much, but never really thought of it as actual music
+Flush Nutch wat
+Flush Nutch Yeah, like a poem, emotionally powerful but without a defined form. I just think it's beautiful. Music is great, good music, I mean.
Metatron Cube Yeah, I like good music too.
Your just used to music that have percussion. This is Ambiance genre. Its a pretty self descriptive title.
This sounds like an guitar arrangement
Videogames are another type of art.
The world-building in DS1 is so bloody skillful as well.
kinda reminds of the save theme from RE4 :P
Yes! Two of my favorite vg pieces of music
Nackols I literally came here to see if anyone else thought so :L
JCoyle92 haha really?
that's cool xD
Nackols the only place where you feel safe in RE4...
+Nackols I was thinking of the Save Room from RE1 :P
Am I the only one that gets so sad from this song. I wont ever be able to experience this game for the first time ever again
If we can get one more souls game with the music and storytelling from Dark Souls 1, the PvP from Dark souls 2, and the PvE gameplay and boss fight experience from Dark Souls 3, it would be one of the best games ever created.
Elden ring pal
@@noahanguiano7261Elden Ring’s music was mid unfortunately
I know this might be a bit late, however this track is relased, its called "a moments peace" and is in the original Album on spotify
The fact that i didn't need to question my self when did i hear this it was an instinct to know thats how magical is dark souls 1 to me
Early 2000s medieval games were something else. Idk but I get some sort of N64/PS2 Zelda type vibe.
It's a great song to have in the background while drawing, it gives everything this majestic feel and inspires you to be mindful of details and take your time
It really helps my creative process
Shame this was never released, easily my favorite song from the game. Thanks for uploading!
This is the character creation music
The moment this music comes on is when you realize how much you've missed playing this old masterpiece for so long.
The best souls game ever. We need a ds4 with this style of design. Just a masterpiece. The lore, the detail, the feelings...art
I've spent days in the character creation menu and this music never got old
God, how I wish I could put words to this game, how I wish I could even wrap ly head around it.
I've been playing this game since I was very young, and to make anything that could capture what this game is like after years of playing seems simply impossible. Just the nature of that fact inspires me in some strange way. I just love this game man. I'd easily say this is the best game of all time by a landslide.
Yes and yes and yes
Reminds me of the Typewriter music from RE4...
thats what puts it at the top of all the character creation songs in the souls series.
This sounds like something that would play in a Resident Evil save room.
Just started my first playthrough 2 days ago, it took me an hour to create my character just because I didn’t want this melody to end.
Just started dark souls for the first time today and this already feels nostalgic to me
I'm sure I've heard this soundtrack ingame though...very familiar
Nope, it plays only during character creation.
theres a part in the credits song that sounds similar
The theme of creation. Within its structure you may comprehend solitude and grace
The most whimsical fantasy sounding song in the series.
Chills every time.
Ah, the love of my life. The one ill Keep replaying till the day i die and nobody can change my mind ever
I don't necessarily like this game or any of these games but when I was making my character here, I just had a thousand mile stare from this song. Puts you in a trance state.
Death ahead in short be weary of death.
i love how one can just inmerse himself in this game and make the time just fly away...
when i first heard this i unironically thought i bought the wrong game knowing what souls games are about
This is my absolute favorite piece of music from the Dark Souls series, and one of my favorites out of all the games I've ever played.
just began my ds1 playthrough today (finished 2 and 3) and i just afked in the character creation for a while to listen to this.. beautiful
and do you finished this game? :)
Yes, it was amazing.. it has such a special feeling to it
I love this game so much
So good. So haunting.
I listen to this while I walk my dog. So peaceful. Praise the sun! \[T]/
Thanks a lot for this song mate. The audio quality is VERY high and it's 10 mins long. Thanks a lot again *^*
Some fear the Darkness and yet, others find solace in it... Such a wonderful ost and game :D
Gosh, this game is a huge piece of history and I hope it remains that way.
I'm 14 and I first started playing early 2019 and I hope the new generations continue to play this game.
Something about Dark Souls is very different than newer games, and it seems that a lot of newer games
are slowly loosing their charm.
this reminds me of the first time I played dark souls. this theme made it feel so magical. don't laugh at me if I cry from nostalgia. I just want to replay all those good memories
I like how dark souls starts you off so calmly before actually dipping you into the dark souls experience. Love the start of this game ❤
And the end of course…
And so it begins...
Elden Ring is a great game, but dark 1 and 2 souls will always have a special place in my heart
How im feeling nostalgic over a game i played 3 months ago?
This is what babies hear in the womb
Praise the sun!
Ah! Our famed savior! Welcome to my humble shop!
I have the best selection you'll ever find at this store at this moment of time! Please, look around!
Yoy249 Praise the pun! :D
I love this song. So beautiful but also kind of haunting and dream like. Never thought character creation music would be my favorite track in a dark fantasy game.
Welp, time to hear this again on Friday...
With the DLC for DaSIII dropping tomorrow I really hope that it adds a bit more of the old magic with a new flair.
draconic33 the real vision was in Demon's Souls
Well how was it?
So calm and so beautiful thank you
dark souls is one of those games that make you reflect on it for weeks, on everything you go through in the game, on the fights, the monsters, the bosses, but I think that the main reflection that this game gives us is the reason, it's the meaning of our struggles, why do we fight our own struggles? for glory, for happiness, for peace, or for simply fighting to live? only you can answer these questions, and I like that. many find the story of the game confusing, but I think the story of this game is formed by the player's interpretations and reflections about the world, the monsters, and companions that we make during the game.
i just stopped creating my character and was enjoying this music for 10 min❤️
i died at the intro of the game.
i died while installing
wrcz i died before i could hit the download button xD
I died when I bought the game.
I died when the game was announced
I died in real life.
First time i heard that music, back in 2011, i never thought i was about to get my ass kicked over and over again, and if i could go back in time, i would. Good times...
*Heres a trailer idea for my most wanted! The Chosen Undead!*
Trailer: The trailer starts off in a open area littered with ruins of a castle, Sephiroth and Cloud are there fighting, Sephiroth manages to defeat Cloud only for Hero (Dragon Quest) to come take his place and fight Sephiroth, only to also lose, then as Sephiroth goes for the killing blow, a unknown silhoutte suddenly appears and slices Sephiroth, he collapses and suddenly from his Unconcious body, rises up a small white flame, as an armored hand grabs it, clenches their fist and the flame disappears into their body, the screen pans up into a familar character.
Potentially weight gimmick, unlike any fighter, they dont become more vulnerable if they roll too much, instead thats replaced by a weight system.
light roll = most i-frames
med roll = mid-i-frames
heavy roll = very little i-frames.
Stage: Lordran
The stage starts off at the massive cathedral where you fight Ornstein and Smough in Anor Londo, then shifting to Firelink Shrine then it would shift to Kiln of the first flame, then it would go to Sens Fortress and loop.
Had this playing while I was creating a character model in blender. Somehow didn’t know what this was from, until my older brother came in and told me. I still remember being FRUSTRATED when I was creating my model, as it wasn’t looking exactly like how I envisioned….until I stopped to listen to this and calmed down
Ahh Those bells in the background i just love it it's so peacful...
