You have no idea this is going to help me. I'm practicing to be a voice actor and simple techniques like these can produce amazing effects ^_^
I'm a physics teacher and amateur musician (clarinet = reed instrument!). I love this video, it's so much fun. A bassoon player will be very familiar with the reed making.
Yes, it's a good project. The only down side is that the balloon produces a very narrow range of air pressure, so it's tricky to get the reed vibrating. But I guess some frustration and experimenting to get something working is not all bad.

This is amazing! I just made one in about a minute with a slightly smaller straw than the ones used here. I'm going to have a lot of fun experimenting with this. Thanks!

@RicoX697 Yes, thank you Rico for making that clear. Straws connect by butting one against another, then taping around. If one straw went inside another, then there would be some obstruction to air flow. It's already challenging to get the reed to work when there are multiple straws connected because there's more resistance to air flow with a longer path.

Great idea. Lots of flexibility. I liked your point 3/4 ths of the way through the video about keeping your eyes open...Stop and really think about what's around you and how things operate... Another great video and project.
What a great idea! I tried it and found that pinching the wire could get the reeds close enough. Pushing a pencil in would widen it. Even just sliding the wire a tiny bit closer or farther from the reeds adjusted them effectively. And I finally was able to get those high squeaks that have alluded me until now! Putting the tape on and off is a bit of a pain, but I folded the end so there is an un-sticky tab at the end.

@Tyler4768 Yes, we're talking about a speaking prosthetic for people in the less developed countries, the way inexpensive wheelchairs or prosthetic leg designs are designed for those circumstances.

one thing that is missing from the video how to properly connect multiple straws. Initially, I pushed one straw inside another.....but you just make sure that both ends are touching each other and carefully tape to seal off the air.
@kiravintio Yes, pipes, accordion, sax. harmonica, oboe, snake charmer's pipes etc... all reed instruments. I have a project on the sciencetoymaker website: snake charmer duck call.

What is that vocal effect? The stereo robot effect?
I'm not sure what you mean by "stereo", but if you look at video 0:36 seconds in you can hear clearly the overtones and harmonics from the resonant vocal cavity. It's always there when we vocalize, but we perceive it better with the robot talk box or overtone (throat) singing.

+Oxygen Beats (Quinlan) Thank you. Unfortunately, the pressure range of the balloon is narrow, so it is more difficult to get sound from balloons than directly from our lungs. So it takes some fine adjusting. It's on my list of things-to-do to see if I can make an easier straw/balloon talk box.
the balloon is a cool representation of our lungs; and you have some cool representations of our vocalchords + mouth. i wonder if you could get something to represent our diaphragm...
+Oxygen Beats (Quinlan) Hmmm…interesting idea. The various Celtic pipes are reed instruments and many designs use bellows. There might be the seed of an idea there. Let me know if you have any ideas for it.
You mean like bag pipes, right? I was actually thinking about that. Bagpipes can hold a tune pretty much indefinitely though right? They store air as they release it, right? If so, that would be like a super-human lung/diaphragm. A little off topic, but that would be amazing if we could exhale while we inhale.
actually, do you know the science/anatomy of whistling (with the human mouth)? I've never been able to whistle. I'm not sure if people just haven't explained it well enough to me or if perhaps my mouth just can't whistle. My teeth are really crooked, so i'm kinda leaning toward the latter explanation.... but i'm not sure.

You should really look into that. It would help alot of people who can not talk. :) It could be kinda possible would it not? Just keep a small blower that blows air throught a straw. Then from there you can help those who can't talk. Would that possibly work? If anyone knows please tell me. :) It would be cool if it could help them.

tex shepherd Usually a talk box determines the pitch, while you create the word with your mouth. So I think that instrumental tunes would work better than vocal songs. That would be more of a standard talk box, not this balloon one.

tex shepherd At 2:50 into the video I showed how I connected a keyboard to a cheap amplifier, then to a certain kind of directional speaker/tube. You would do the same, except that you would connect to your phone instead of a keyboard.
