This series of alternative histories is great. As an American, I learned a lot that I did not know about this important battle. Thank you and keep up the good work.
Thank you for putting this on! It has become one of my favorite channels out there. The 'What Ifs' are absolutely fascinating. A few subtle changes here and there could result in a substantial change to the stage of geopolitics today.
Well, American grammar has definitely won! What if Britain won the siege of Yorktown? Well, it didn’t. There’s no doubt about that. What if Britain HAD won the siege of Yorktown? Well, that’s a different question. Why does this ancient British newspaper have to speak American?
*What if Britain HAD won the siege of Yorktown? America may HAVE never become a republic. Are there really not enough people left at the Times who are literate? How depressing.
It's the land on where now america sits on that makes a USA or somethng else inevitable. So much areable farm land and future other resources. (Like lithium which a bit a bunch of it is sitting near old valcanoes i bet) Someone was going to try to live there and control it an d the nature resources would have dictated the winner. No one from Europe could ever garrison it. One of the hidden reasons that the US 2nd Ammendment was important to the then young country was that no could just take the means of standing your ground be they a foreign power or just your neighbor. Arguements can be made on the how are what govt would be in charge but whoever lived there was going to get rich as a nation....
Even if Britain had won the siege, the US would fight on and with French assistance, the colonies would still win. The British priority was Jamaica at the time, not the 13 colonies.
@@Suchtel10 Trade, the wealth of the British Empire was virtually entirely dependent on trade. Thirteen Colonies at the time just did not provide anything like the level of trade value to the Empire compared to Jamaica. Sugar was one of the most valuable trade commodities of the time period, and that's before you start mentioning things like Rum. Jamaica was a huge source of wealth, the Thirteen Colonies on the other hand actually cost more to support than they generated. People tend to forget that this was well before the expansion West, and much of the raw resource as well as the agricultural wealth of the US was simply not present at the time. It either had yet to be developed (agricultural), or discovered (much of the raw material). The people of the time were basing their decisions on what was available at the time, not what would be available in the future.... One thing I have learned in sixty some years of life is that we do not have crystal balls capable of seeing into the future....
Why does that English guy keeps saying Manhattan without kings county - Brooklyn, Staten island- Richmond county which most of the British fleet is, New York- Manhattan is not much except where most of the wealth is.

I've been waiting for this one.

would of been better if they did Saratoga.

sieges either tie up enemy unit's or have the defenders advantage to inflict more losses. or indeed hold to be relieft.
I think if the British won at Yorktown New York stays with Britain and New England maybe.

Why should they care for Jamaica?
Wishful thinking imo
@@Suchtel10 Jamaica made more money than all of the 13 colony's combined.

Another question is what id the Americas somehow won the battle of Bunker Hill?
I don't think this would have made much difference other than speed up the British withdrawal from Boston
Umm Ackshewally it was Breed’s hill, not Bunker Hill that was fought over. 😂
British may have "won" at Bunker Hill, but it was a strategic loss. They were still bottled up in Boston.
@@dongilleo9743 that does not make the battle a strategic loss. The battle had no discernible impact on the outcome of the wider siege.
True and the British lost a lot of people....
What if the British Military had Commanders promoted on merit instead of family wealth? *Laughs in Freedom*
It didnt happen now did it..😅
