I love these old reviews.. I stumbled upon a bottle of this today and it was $33.45us no added tax.. Ralfy gave it an 89 and you both gave it an 88. It is now my least expensive scotch whisky and I hope it is as good as you all say. I may have to go grab another one... Cheers gents!

I think the colour of a whisky tells you something genuine about how that particular bottle came to be, that for me is part of the appreciation. That said it wouldn't prevent me from purchasing a bottle. Equally, I wish distillers trusted us enough to believe we wouldn't not buy a bottle because it was the 'wrong' colour. There's no such thing.

For me, the Aultmore 12 I'I can get for CAN$30 cheaper than The Balvennie 12, plus it's higher abv, natural color, and non-chill-filtered. I can add more colour if I so please. I'll just buy food coloring. How does magenta color sound?
Aultmore certainly is extensively used in Dewars blends but it isn't the main source. That would be Aberfeldy. You can taste the peat in all the Dewar's blends.
chill filtering take the fats and oils out of the whisky and prevents the cloudiness when ice is added, but it takes a lot of flavor out of the whisky. e150 additive to color the whisky is wrong in many ways you just need to check out rally.com

+Scotch Test Dummies notice they always go with e150a when they want to defend caramel coloring because c,d are cheaper to produce yet are the worst to consumed . if they just used better barrels this problem would not exist

i agree, it's about the taste. but i do mind colouring. the colour can give you an inside at the aging on the type of wood, a peek at it's history. and did you drop the price im seeing on the website?? oh man, the whisky u can buy for that money.

+Bart Fargo Nice little kit but you are correct...on my budget I wouldn't have been able to afford it and would have spent my money on buying more spirit liquid over the display box. Bart. These are more of a tool for Dewars to get the word out on their single malt bottles.
This is THE very best scotch on the planet. Investigate the use of peat vs use of coke/coal. Better distilleries could afford coal....lesser ones had to use peat which unfortunately imparted a peaty aspect to the final product.
If I see Aultmore I will buy it, that is, if I have the money... Right now, I have a big pot of French vanilla ice cream with salted caramel swirl going, and my dram on the side of that is an Ardbeg Auriverdes with a splash of water...I'm pretty close to being in heaven, dummies...
its not a big deal to me about the colour added...the reason most do it is not to "fake" or hoax us into thinking a 3 year old whisky is aged 50 years in sherry barrels its simply to keep a standard level colour to the whisky...personally I don't like colour added but it makes no real difference to me....now the chill filtering is a whole different thing....every barrel will have slight variances in colour so they add a bit to keep them all the same...some people might get turned off if the bottle they buy now is a different colour then the last bottle they bought
If a scotch is that good, why add colourant? I won't purchase anything with added colorant. It's not hard; Macallan, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Glenglassaugh, Ardbeg, Highland Park, Benriach, AnCnoc, Balblair, Glendronach, Brora, Port Ellen, Glenfarclas just to name a few that don't add any colourant. I purchase a lot of scotch and I'm very picky about which scotches I purchase. As it is, I'm unable to purchase everything I want. So why drift into coloured scotches?

Down here in the colony the present expression is 46% ABV natural colour and non chill filtered so all good. Delicious.

just saw Balvenie 12 dw here for $73 and they had a sign up with a one bottle limit!
