The shortage was there a decade before Covid hit...that just worsened it. Multiple studies have been done as to why EMS providers, specifically Paramedics quit. Pay is obviously one factor, but there are others. The leading one is toxic leadership. Followed by lack of recognition, excessive workloads, long hours, and being placed in positions which are not real safe. On this last issue, I am not talking the scenes but doing emergency transfers where you take a critical patient from one hospital to a higher level of care with insufficient crew staffing on board. Add to this all the mental and physical wear and tear and you get the idea. Why work a job with the amount of initial training, continuing education, and legal liability when a kid at a fast food joint makes about the same thing you do. I think the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics said that most Paramedic leave the field after 5 years. Sadly, it take 5 years to become a really competent provider.
Part of it is the pay. Ems has turned into customer satisfaction instead of patient care. It's a joke. You know why it takes so long to respond? Because we have to respond to the idiots who want an ambulance but don't need one. "I need an ambulance because I ate too much and I'm not full". "I need an ambulance because I have had chronic back pain for 3 years but I need to go to the hospital". "I need an ambulance because I was bit by a mosquito and now it's itchy and I scratched it". Actual calls. But nobody wants to report on that. Give the that STEMI, stroke, shooting or overdose. I live for that. But emt and paramedic school don't teach you that you'll use your skills MAYBE once every 3 months. People use ems as a taxi when they know dang well they could have driven themselves.
I am a street medic and i don't support this at all. EMS has real things that have real mental health impact. Hey lawmakers DO YOUR JOB and treat EMS like its going to save lives. EMTs and Paramedics should be paid the same as any other medical professional or first responder like police and fire. Mark my words if EMS fails the whole system will fall apart.
My department is in so short staffed they're hiring people with ZERO certifications and putting them in school with a 2 year contract starting after EMT AND FIRE certs are official.........
I wounder if they get paid or if pay is even on the table im thinking maybe the reason of everyone quitting is because of the pay.... I remember being a child slave for the chance to learn remember they will always say it will be a good experience for you until you hate you're life because they don't pay enough for long hours no social life and when it comes to starting a family then you regret it...
