I hit the road less travelled, and found myself at Windhoek City.
Windhoek is indeed the largest and capital city of Namibia, located in the central part of the country. It serves as the administrative, economic, and cultural hub of Namibia, offering visitors a blend of modern amenities and traditional African charm.

    • Night life at Windhoek...
The largest city and capital of Namibia is Windhoek. Windhoek is a vibrant and culturally diverse city that offers a variety of attractions and activities for visitors. Here are some things you can find in Windhoek:
    1. Independence Avenue: This is the main street in Windhoek and a popular spot for shopping, dining, and entertainment. It is lined with numerous shops, cafes, restaurants, and markets where you can buy local crafts and souvenirs.
    2. Christuskirche: Located in the heart of Windhoek, Christuskirche is a historic Lutheran church that serves as a prominent landmark. The church was built in the early 20th century and features an impressive neo-Gothic architectural style.
    3. Namibia National Museum: If you're interested in Namibia's history, culture, and natural heritage, a visit to the Namibia National Museum is a must. The museum exhibits a wide range of artifacts, displays, and information about Namibia's diverse ethnic groups, archaeological finds, and geological formations.
    4. Heroes' Acre: Located on a hilltop just outside Windhoek, Heroes' Acre is a national monument dedicated to the heroes and heroines of Namibia's independence struggle. It offers panoramic views of the city and serves as a symbol of national pride and remembrance.
    5. Craft Market: Windhoek is home to several craft markets where you can find a variety of handmade crafts, jewelry, artwork, and textiles. The Namibia Craft Centre and the Penduka Craft Village are popular places to explore and purchase unique Namibian souvenirs.
    6. Katutura Township: For a glimpse into the daily lives of locals, a visit to Katutura Township is recommended. This vibrant and bustling area offers an authentic cultural experience, with markets, shebeens (traditional bars), and a chance to interact with the local community.
    7. National Botanic Garden: Located on the outskirts of Windhoek, the National Botanic Garden is a serene oasis where you can explore a variety of indigenous plant species. It's a great place for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and those seeking tranquility.
    8. Namibia Craft Brewery: Beer enthusiasts may enjoy a visit to the Namibia Craft Brewery, located just outside Windhoek. This microbrewery offers tours and tastings, showcasing a range of locally brewed beers with unique flavors and styles.
These are just a few highlights of what you can find in Windhoek, Namibia's largest city and capital. The city combines modern amenities with a rich cultural heritage, making it an intriguing destination for travelers.

Welcome to the land of the brave. Hope you enjoy your stay 😊.
Just to add more clarity as to why there's not running water and electricity in homes in the informal settlements. Our urban planning laws only allow for houses to be constructed on land that has been serviced with all the necessary infrastructure like water, electricity, sewage, tarred roads etc. So the municipalities either give land to developers to provide these or they do it themselves and sell the land to individuals who then build their homes. But the for last 25 years or so most municipalities gave land to developers who then sold properties at high prices, which is out of reach for a lot of people.
People got tired of waiting and then decided to take matters into their own hands and grabbed unserviced municipal land.
The only way for them to have running water in their homes is if they get relocated, then the land can get serviced.
Also one of the reasons homes in informal settlements are made from zinc sheets is because they are there unlawfully and municipality does from time to time demolish these homes. So people can't risk building brick houses when they don't have title deeds.
These informal settlements only started after independence with the influx of people to urban areas. The majority of black people were confined to their ethnic homelands during Apartheid. Those that stayed in urban areas were given permission to stay there, and if one wanted to move to an urban area it was a long and cumbersome process.
With independence came freedom of movement and municipalities were not really prepared for such an influx of people.
