When I first learned the babies of Toothless and Light Fury were called “nightlights,” I was head over heels in love with name. It’s the perfect balance of the names from both of the parents. The nightlights are also super adorable.

And the night's themselves Actually show more evidence that&and Day furrys are the same species. When they show traits of both as the grow up they show more one gender the males diverge the most losing white coloration as the female nightlight is all white like her mother
the egg shell's texture likely is determined by who the female is. As the female's body is designed to produce specific eggs.
Next question: since there are night furies and light furies, are there other species of furies out there (excluding nightlights)?
Sand wraiths are pretty similar looking, though they are in a different class and have different stats

Definitely an interesting idea! Though I will mention Timberjack is apart of the sharp class family, due to their razor sharp wings made to cut trees down.

Those are my picks for their names. Also I think they where all hatched around the same time probably minutes apart from each other. Or its possibly their eggs were laid one at a time. Although the night lights are about the same size so they were likely hatched at the same time

It'd have been neat to see at least some of them have that mix. But I also really like the spotted/patchy versions we got. It reminds me of cats, which is what a lot of Toothless' movements, actions, and general personality traits were based off of.
Well, if you look at the genetics of cats, it works out pretty accurately for these guys. There’s a thing called white spotting, which accounts for black and white cats. They’re genetically black cats, but they also have a gene that overrides that in some spots, giving them white on parts of their fur. Heck, even some full white cats can be genetically one color but have 100% white spotting, which is what I assume to be the case for the Light Fury. She may be genetically a black or silver light fury, but with this gene she becomes completely white. This means that by having children with a dragon with little to no light spotting (Toothless) they can have children that are black (no spotting), mixed (some spotting) or even pure white (100% spotting). Genetically it makes perfect sense, and I personally headcanon that the Light Fury is just a normal female Night Fury with white spotting, just with different powers than Toothless. Heck, females and males could have completely different sets of powers. But yeah that’s my take on it.
And that’s also why having them be gray in this case wouldn’t happen.

Alrighty, so I went through the video where you went over the Night Fury vs Light Fury. Also, made sure to watch through this video entirely. There are a few details here which I think are best to go over in order to better reveal why the Nightlights and the fact they were able to occur do make complete sense, from an ecological standpoint. As well as what exactly their fate is and what we need to expect out of the Nightlights in terms of their ecological impact. Which, considering the series, they have a very simplified, but extremely accurate, take on ecology in the dragons alongside taking a lot of real-life based inspirations from actual wildlife in terms of evolution, adaptability, ecological changes, etc.
First and foremost, it was confirmed that the Light Fury is actually a branched off subspecies to the Night Fury. Very, very akin to how domestic dogs (canis lupus familiaris) is a branched subspecies to the grey wolf (canis lupus lupus). Due to such, it makes complete sense that, exactly like wolves and dogs, the Night Fury and Light Fury can interbreed to create an interesting "cross", rather than what would be considered a true hybrid. This means that these Nightlights are a cross that if Night Furies still existed could have very well been naturally occurring, despite ecological differences between Night and Light Furies.
Then we have the impact. What exactly is the expected fate of these Nightlights? Well, again, based on how HTTYD works and how they beautifully reflect real life ecology and evolution in a more simplified form, simply put we should expect that future generations will inevitably revert into Light Furies. As, while yes they take on traits from both Night and Light Furies, we need to consider that Toothless is the last of his species. His offspring now take on 50/50 Night/Light Fury genetics most likely. But, of course, chances are they won't inbreed which means should these Nightlights be fertile, they will realistically only have Light Fury mates to choose from. Then, that would add in more Light Fury genetics into the bloodlines, making less Night Fury genetics. For several generations, that kind of breeding inevitably will snuff out the Night Fury species as a whole. This does mean that the Night Fury species is genuinely destined to go extinct, as the more generations from the Night Lights go on, the more Light Fury genetics will slowly overtake the Night Fury genetics if no inbreeding is involved. Up until eventually the later generations will have completely reverted back into having Light Fury genetics alone, seeing as Night Fury genes would have again been slowly snuffed out with each passing generation as each Night Light (and any descendants thereof) would have solely Light Fury mates to pick from if inbreeding were to be barred.
Out of all the comments I've skimmed across, yours make the absolute sense.
Unless I’m missing something, I haven’t really seen any defining evidence that toothless is the last of his kind in the world, just very hard to find others. I’ve also seen no evidence that there are any other light furies besides toothless’s mate. Given that note it is possible that the nightlights might find others of either species to mate with in the world (given they are fertile, they could not be) or they are a hybrid where their parents are both last of their kinds, forcing incest on the children. Since it’s a children’s rated world, odds are it would be given the the first option, or the light furies will never mate.

I don't feel that way. Both Toothless and Hiccup learned from each other and grew to becone the leaders of their groups. Those lessons were never forgotten and Berk was already gone, the Berkians needed to rebuild even if the dragons stayed.

The end of the third movie said that “Vikings will guard the secret of dragons until it is safe for them to return” and I think hiccup said “I believe one day they will” which might mean a soft reboot. Well that's the same as them saying no one had ever seen a night fury in the first film. Their knowledge was really limited until Hiccup started his search for it.
It's quite possible or even likely, depending on how much overlap the species' ranges had. Of course for me that further convinces me the nightlights are just sterile hybrids like ligers. Or if such hybrids had existed in the past, they had no evolutionary advantage over the two parent species so never gained a foothold as a species in their own right.

Also, I'm always so happy to see more videos on HTTYD. Despite it's popularity and how highly critics think of the franchise in general, there's really not that many videos on this amazing franchise in relative to other movies out there. And the only ones I've been seeing lately have been negative on the last movie ☹

Light furies and nightfuries are the same species. They have what's known as sexual dimorphism where one sex I different from the other. (See lions, most birds, white cheeked gibbons, ECT)
Now, just the white cheeked gibbons, all thier babies are born white. With age, they turn black and when they are sexually mature, the males stay the same color, the females turn white.
Night lights are the same way. They have two different colors when they're born and when they're young, but when they grow, they'll obtain the color of thier gender. I believe you can tell the gender of the babies by thier eyes. Boys have green eyes while the females have blue eyes.
Toothless was based on a variety of animals including cats, axolotls and (quite possibly) ferrets. So it wouldn't surprise me if thier offspring was based on the thought process of white cheeked gibbons.

If you read the books, The light Fury's real name is Luna. I don't know what Hiccup would call her, Maybe Moon or Cloud or something like that.
