Over 30,000 people climb the mountain each year, and Abbie experiences some anxiety over the hoards of people who were walking on the same day. Thank you Abbie brings back memories from 2003. Climbed Ben Lomond from the campsite on the west coast of Lock Lomond. It was August bank holiday weekend and I was on the top early so no crowds. I ran out of water as it was 26 degrees c at the campsite 8 hours up and down. Out on the North Yorkshire moors national park most weekends as it’s close by and quiet.
Abbie as good as they are Ben Nevis, Ben Ledi & Ben Lomond might be the wrong mountains to climb if you’re looking peace, quiet & solitude in Scotland! Thanks for sharing 😊

Man this is a beautiful place. Scotland is defiantly one of the UK’s best treasures when you get past the midges!!! Lovely views of Loch Lomand too. Mondays aren’t so bad when it starts the week off with a bit of Wild.

Nice video again, Abbie. Not sure when you did this, but Ben Lomond, already a very popular hill as it is the most southernly Munro and easily accessible from Glasgow, has been pretty much mobbed since the easing of the first lockdown. Fantastic hike, but not the hill to head to for solitude.
I totally understand how you feel with the busy nature of Ben Lomond, I avoid the southerly Munros for this very reason - I can't handle the car parks and I don't like being around other people, the point of hillwalking for me is to get away from that dynamic. I feel like it's far worse during Covid since outdoor activities are all we really have. If you can, head much further north.

Walked it earlier today from the Overflow car par park via the "easy" traditional route. Very hot , sunny day soas buy as you'd imagine. My first Munro. Found it quite demanding at the age of 63. Didn't recognise your descent tho (Ptarmigan route ?) Oh and crowds bother me too but what is infinitely worse was the walker who was playing loud music. I could've screamed.

Great video Abbie. As you've found out, Ben Lomond in July is like Sauchiehall St in Glasgow. Well done get through that anxiety point 👍

I have a pair of Vasque Sundowner boots that are 2 years old, and that I have hiked over 500 miles in. I have found these to be a very durable and good boot. As far as grippiness goes, they are excellent most of the time. Unfortunately, the polyurethane outsoles do not grip well on wet rocks. If anyone reads this and decides to buy some, I recommend buying and using a different insole with these boots. Also, they occasionally need to be re-waterproofed.
Thanks for sharing your anxities and being so open about how you were feeling, I try to avoid these situations by going out on less pleasant days or avoid popular places. I always feel self-conscious in crowds, weird but there it is, probably why I prefer the winter to the summer (I think my dad was the same). Enjoying your vlogs 👍👍👍

Abbie,fantastic footage of indescribable and dramatic beauty of Scotland.Missing it so much as i have not been able to visit for about a year.Reminiscing how scenic it was and lucky to have spotted lots of deer with massive antlers almost as big as there are in Sweden 🇸🇪 Would you like to visit Sweden one day and explore its wild hidden beauties?

Was very cloudy, 3 hours we seen nothing and nobody. We summited with zero views and strangely zero wind. The decent was sketchy to begin as maybe 10m visibility. We were eventually rewarded at around 400m getting jaw dropping views of Loch Lomond. We found that honesty box, unbelievable selection. We hiked 8 miles in around 4 hours. Pretty big walk. As we sat up in the Bonny a “belter” 🏴✌🏻(passed 5 people the whole walk)
I like the combination of the visual poetry (as you so aptly described it) and the actual poetry of your narration. What a great hike that was. You can understand why it was so crowded, even if it takes away from the experience a good bit. We've been encountering this in the US this year, as well. Covid-19 has brought out many novice hikers seeking a way to get out of the house while avoiding places like movie theaters or restaurants that seem risky. Obviously, if everyone has the same idea, the green spaces can get a bit overwhelmed.
Love your Vids , and can I say from experience after doing over 200 munros You did the second most physical ridge walk outside of the Cullin Ridge. the CMD. Any munro's after hat would be no problems for you. Carry on the brill work
Have to disagree that the CMD is more physical than the Aonach Eagach ridge.
@@tuesdayjam5905 I said the Cullin Ridge on Skye. I didn't even mention the Aonach Eagach ridge. BTW, the full traverse of the Cullin Ridge usually takes 2 days , Each day around 10/12hrs ;-) Over the years Done many of the Ridge walks in Scotland. Unfortunately Anno Domini has caught up with me. IMHO, the best 5 ridge walks in Scotland in order of technical climbing. 1: Cullin Ridge. 2: Aonach Eagach. 3: Liathach. & The Am Fasarinen Pinnacles. 4: An Teallach , BTW the most beautiful mountain Scotland. 5: CMD. But my fav. Mountain at just 2000ft high is Stac Pollaidh. It should be a must on everybodys list to climb. I could spend all day up there just chilling out admiring the spectacular views, or scrambling, & Rock Climbing to your hearts content, You can make as easy or hard as you want. Or use the many paths that bypass the difficult bits. It's special :-)
@@protarget1 I never said you mentioned the Aonach Eagach ridge. I read your post as saying that the CMD is the second most physical ridge outside the Cullin Ridge......I responded by saying, effectively, that the CMD is not more physical than the Aonach Eagach ridge....which is much tougher.
Following your videos, you hike for the same reasons as myself, its a great way to de-stress from normal modern life. Finding it hard getting the time now having a family, so your video are giving me inspiration to take on the WHW or GGW.
Live in NE Scotland which is also great for walking in the Cairngorms, but the West Coast of Scotland just looks brilliant (weather permitting).
You should try some Caledonian pine forest day walks in places like Glen Tanner where you can also take im Mount Keen the most Easterly Munro at the same time. Or Glen Affric Caledonian forest where if you keep going West you can climb the 5 sisters of Kintail.

I also want to thank you for your honesty on how your feeling.
Strangely, my anxiety leads to an opposite experience to yours. On Ben Nevis, it was even more crowded and while I have social anxiety, in this case the crowd actually helped. It was my first time climbing a mountain of any kind and as I was doing it alone, I was very nervous. Having people around me made me feel safer. I actually had a bit of a panic attack on the way down when I was mostly alone (fear of heights was also kicking in).

That's a lot more people than in most of your films. Quadruple that and you have any of the valley trails in Yosemite National Park in the U.S. So many people! Some day you should come to Alaska, fewer people, and some lovely alpine hikes with granite tors on them.

Great Munro was my first one a few years ago now used in the training for doing Ben Nevis i done the same route but in Reverse . Great Video making me miss the mountians been off them for so long now with travel restrictions etc. good to see you enjoying scotland while you were up here in the summer Abbie looking forward to more Videos . see you on the next monthly podcast hopfully .
A great documenting of the ascent and descent of Ben Lomond and may I commend you on your pronunciation of "Loch", not bad for a Sasanach lol .....although marks off for referring to valleys and lakes. The valleys and lakes stop at the border, only glens and only one Lake - Lake of Menteith in Scotland. Can I also encourage to buy some boots with a good grippy sole, or your going to come a cropper on one of these steep descents. Great vid though :-)

I could totally feel the anxiety from all those people even just watching the video. Not what you anticipated, eh. I'm a Yank but I actually climbed Ben Nevis in my distant youth. Glen Nevis is one of my favorite regions, along with the pass of Glen Coe and Glenfinnan. A question, not a criticism: What sort of camcorder do you use, in terms of resolution? I was adjusting the controls to try and make it HD, with poor results. I know proper HD camcorders are expensive. Just ignore me. ;-)
A lot of people’s first Munro, ( being nearest to Glasgow), made better by going back down by the Ptarmigan. My favourite way of doing Ben Lomond. Unfortunately, though my fitness is fine for still doing Munro’s, my left hip and knee has decided that I can’t do the descent any more. Hence it looks like Ben Nevis a few weeks ago might be my last trek up the mountains unless I can get it sorted. The pain is beyond excruciating......
Having done West Highland Way, I am inspired to do Ronald Turnbull's Not the West Highland Way - it has additional Munros and bealachs
missed Anna in this one. trails here are overcrowded as well.

Ptarmigan Ridge is a diffrent route up Ben lomond a route less traveled the way abbie went up was the path main path and the way back down is called the Ptarmigan Ridge
I thought Scotland was closed off now due to COVID ?
Various restrictions have been in force since the original March UK-wide lockdown. If this was at any point after February this year, even if it wasn't illegal, the ability to maintain social distancing would have been, um... shall we say, problematic.........
