Granular Synthesis and Test Equipment Soundpack for Audio Damage Quanta

  • In which I talk about the sound pack for the Audiodamage Quanta Granular Synthesizer I made from test equipment sounds.
    Chris Randall of Audio Damage saw my video on the Princeton Applied Research 124A Lock-In Amplifier and was impressed: he asked me if I could make a pack on basis of that machine for their synth Quanta, and I was more than happy to do that. Granular synthesis has been an old love of mine, it was even part of my masters exam back in University. Combining the test equipment with the granular tools was a perfect fit, and I was so happy with the pack that I incorporated it in my live and travel setup. In the video I describe the process, talk a bit about Quanta and go into the context of how I use these sounds personally.

    I was visiting Ircam in Paris about 20 years ago, as a sound engineer , and they managed to make me a special tour and discussion in Xenakis work because I’m Greek! What a great day it was.....

    I was excited when I saw this collaboration on Instagram and I am blown away by the result!!! Audio Damage kill it and you are by far one of the most creative guys on here, so thank yous very much for this! I continue to buy Audio Damage's products just because I think they are cool (plus, I gather quite a collection there that enables me to make better music) and I will get one of your shirts for Superbooth now just because you did this cool project and rock it while I'm there, haha! Brilliant!

    Granular Synthesis is life... I just finished reading Microsound the other day and I have to say, there's a lot I didn't understand, all the technical aspects (which are a lot), but I found lots of inspiration in it as well. Maybe you have other sources where one could read about Granular Synthesis? Cheers!

      Formalized Music (Xenakis) is a great read, Feichtinger wrote some standards on Gabor analysis which was essential back in my studies, though more for the analysis part. Microsound by Roads you have read already, Barry Truax had some essays if I remember correctly.

    I love iPads so much because of all the different "keyboards" and weird input methods. The Moog Model 15 is a freaking marvel on the iPad with the built in Animoog style MPE keyboard. I haven't used a computer for music for more than 8 years or so, relying fully on the ipad. Drambo as a sequencer inside AUM driving all sorts of cool soft synths is my preferred way of working. It's like a modular Electron box with great UI and immense flexibility. Nothing like it exists on PC and there's no way for me to go back to working on pc/mac at this point. I just love having absolutely everything I need right there at my fingertips. My workflow on an ipad is probably 2x what it would be with a mouse and kbd.
    The AUM workflow is pretty much as dawless as you're gonna get on a tablet, and I absolutely love it. There are DAWs on ipads as well, but I literally never use them anymore. I find the workflow saddening and tedious. I'd rather work within the limitations of dawlessness than have to work in a DAW at this point. I'm sure it would be different if I made more normal music, but for my tastes, can't get much better than AUM and Drambo + thousand bucks worth of soft synths and effects.

    • @Hainbach
      @Hainbach  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gabor made a ground breaking essay in 1946, that is a good start. He developed the idea of sound quanta Vs Fourier, and Xenakis, being interested in science as he is, soaked that up. Else, Microsound by Curtis Roads is very good.

    I have a pretty stupid and simple question about quanta: can anyone tell me how quanta organizes the pitch of the samples? My logic would say quanta takes the exact same pitch of that sample and if you press a key for instance three semi tones above it, quanta should play that sound three semitones above the original pitch.
    In a lot of cases something strange happens like: I put in a c# sample. Next I try to find some harmonies and have to find out that many tones of the c# scales sound inharmonious (in this case for instance works the c maj scale best)
    Can anyone help me with that problem?

    • @Hainbach
      @Hainbach  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you sample a c# pressing c will play that sample at that root note, which is c#. Quanta does not know the pitch of you sample, it will only transpose in relation, as will most samplers. So that is why the c scale you play works. It's actually c#.
