Nick goes out and about in Bow to trace it's history in The Salvation Army's past. The story of the Match Girls' Strike has recently been popularised in the Netflix film 'Enola Holmes 2'.

Yesi like the salvation army for these types of reasons. My grandfather was a member of the salvation army I m proud to say and work against poverty . Yet again the same type of oppression is back and the S A will be there to help.

Today, 2 March 2018, I found this video while trying to find some about a match factory problem that occurred during early 20th century in Hull, Quebec (Canada). Yours is about similar history that's very good to know about. A friend recently, last month, Feb. 2018, told me a little about with respect to what happened at the E.B. Eddy match factory in Hull, Qc, so I did some Web searching to see what I could find and I didn't find any videos about this but did get links for some articles and then searching for videos, I came across yours and some others. Thanks for the video and it's playlisted in my Favourites as well as History lists. It's definitely history to be commemorated but is also good to know about if we care about working conditions of people ... globally, today, tomorrow, .... If we learn about it, then we'd need to be either sociopaths or psychopaths to not care about this; and it is ongoing mistreatment for MANY people.

It's excellent that the SA opened the red phosphorous factory, but this is a rather skewed view of Bessant. She may have acted with good intentions, but garnered fame as she was middle class and therefore a 'mentionable' person in the press of the day. The matchworkers themselves organised their strike, by most accounts Bessant was not involved in the decision, in some accounts the strike was organised despite Bessant.
It seems that her resistance and calling attention was a factor that caused the workers to organize. This often true in labor movements and civil rights.
