I like that he had the guts to change it up, it wasnt perfect but he really had a lot of guts to do something different
He showed what he could do musically and creatively. Just because he changed the song arrangement doesn't mean it was bad. Yes, it was different, but it was great and his voice made it work. They are just stuck in the 'original' and didn't open up their minds to what he is all about. I say Bravo!
the original is great for a reason. He changed it but added his average singing voice.

But it does matter! I think this was an absolutely crucial part of his life. I think he really learned a lot from this experience, in performing in front on such an audience an especially from learning from these judges. I think that one of the many reasons that he is so successful now-on Broadway, and his powerful TH-cam presence, all of it-is because he knows how to take criticism. Because Todrick Hall knows how to learn. He learns from not only things like this (American freaking Idol!), but also from others, and his own mistakes.
So yeah, this matters. It matters a lot.
I don't think these criticism were really helpful. They did not encourage him, rather discouraged him from singing. Thank God he was strong enough to know how talented he is. Actually, it was the inspiration for him to show the world who he is and what he can do, because people love him. He learned that he can be a star without these self-important judges.

I actually love that version. It fits his voice a lot better than the original could and it does sound very good.
He did an amazing job! The judges can't make up their mind. They want everyone to be original and creative and to NOT sound like the original artist and to make the song THEIR OWN but wasn't happy when he did just that. He was very creative, definitely a performer, and the crowd loved it! At the end of the day, it was an awesome performance and it's the viewers voting. So, good luck Todrick!

yes he was awesome and original.. Ellen was right the audience loved his originality, his energy, his voice, his everything... Randy, Kara and Simon were very wrong to say he shouldn't have changed the arrangement.. it was GREAT!

If i don't know Todrick, i think i will say what the judge said. That he is a dancer trying to sing. But now he learned a lot of lesson and became a best performer, not just a dancer, not just a singer. I love you, Todrick!

There is NO problem taking a song and completely transforming it into another thing, they are dead wrong about that. Simon actually had a great point though, that when you change a song it's supposed to be for the better, and what he did was different, but not better. Simon and (weirdly enough) Ellen are the only ones making sense.
