I grew up in Washington, a suburb of Peoria, Illinois. For our 8th grade field trip, we went to Springfield and toured Lincoln’s home, law office, and tomb, as well as the nearby State House. It turned out to be a pivotal event in my life, since seeing the legislature in action and relics of Lincoln’s law practice inspired in me the determination to become a lawyer. Consequently, I later went to law school and practiced law for 30 years before retiring. All inspired by a trip to Springfield!

I am Australian and admire Abraham Lincoln as one of the truly outstanding heroes of human history. I visited Springfield several years ago and visited the home every day for a week or so. It was a privilege to visit his home. I also visited his nearby tomb and the remains of New Salem where he lived as a very young man. I was driven to New Salem in a spectacular act of kindness by an American woman. Someone looking for a business idea might consider running a van for tourists between Springfield and New Salem!

While I admire Lincoln, it must be said that, as a politician, he pulled a few fast ones. When he was in the state legislature, he joined a few colleagues who actually jumped out a window to prevent a quorum for an upcoming vote! As president, he suspended the writ of habeas corpus, a highly illegal and unconstitutional measure. He was no doubt a great leader, but not in any sense perfect!

When we last visited Lincoln’s home, it was a wonderful experience. My daughter uses a wheel chair & as soon as a park guide saw her he personally lead us to the back yard. The back porch lowered to ground level & we both got on & then it raised & we basically took the tour backwards & it was wonderful. We could not go upstairs but we saw everything on the first floor & did not feel like we missed anything. It was really great.

I am so thrilled with this video. I will be 74 soon. I "met him" when I was 12, and have been awed by him ever since. In 1962 my parents and I visited the Fords Theatre, which had not been refurbished. It was a Lincoln Museum. Plain walls, wooden floors and exhibits. Thinking back, I think I felt closer to him there under those circumstances, than if I were to go back there today. My father went to purchase a small botebook so that i could take notes on the exhibits. I was 12.
From that point on, he's the human being I've reverred the most in spite of the fact, I recognize his many flaws. After leaving academia i began lecturing in various aspects of Lincoln annually in my local community. But sadly, I never made it to Springfield. My son and his family are vacationong in the West this week, but took a southern route in order to visit his tomb and sent me pix. They didnt take time to tour his home. I will be sending him a link to this site. Thanks so much.

They had three different holes; that’s fancy. 😂 Idk why but this tickled me bc when I think of outhouses, I’m like, why would you need three different holes to do your business in; it’s all waste from the bodies so it shouldn’t have mattered that much, right? But I guess he was the president, so nothing but the best for him.

When I was a child my parents brought me to see President Lincoln's home.
Also we went on a train ride that had an actor that played Lincoln.
I was small & he was so tall & the top hat made him look taller.
He sat down with us & would tell us tails & it was really like meeting the real person, especially when you're a little 'kid'
I sat on his lap & got to hold his gold pocket watch as my parents looked on & he told such interesting stories.
Our time with him was brief because there were other's on the train but I have NEVER forgotten that experience. I wish I could thank him in person as an adult.
I have a large collection of books on President Lincoln & the Civil War.
I'm hopeful that if the man, the actor might see this humble comment -- that it makes him smile.
Thank you sir for letting 'US' go on this tour to see Mr. & Mrs. Lincoln's home , that unfortunately President & family-- never got to live there long & of the loss of their dear children.
On slavery -- President Lincoln said ; " If you want slavery FIRST be a slave. "
Treat ALL FOLKS the way 'YOU' want to be treated -- is my take away from that.

My parents brought me to see Lincoln's home in 1962. The area does appear to have changed. The Lincoln home was surrounded by old homes. The neighborhood was decaying due to age & lack of upkeep. I believe the backyard had a picket fence.
The sidewalk in front of the house was old concrete and much narrower than the current brick paver construction. The house color remains the same as I recall seeing.

I grew up in Litchfield, Illinois, which is the half way point on I55 between Springfield, IL and St. Louis, Mo. I have been there many times. I am amazed each time I'm there. The out house is interesting. I asked the guide why the seats weren't just flat as most I had seen. He said it was because women had long dresses and had hoops. That way the dresses would fit over them and not interfere with their pretty dresses. I thought that was very interesting!

Back in the 1960's before the National Park Service had the home there was a porch swing on the back porch that you could sit in. The kitchen had a baked loaf of bread like it just came out of the oven. It seems like the boys bedroom and hired help bedroom upstairs were closed off. Did they mention the optical illusion of how the chairs looked to have short legs because of the tall ceilings?

My school had planned a tour Springfield when I was in 7th grade (I'm now a senior in college) centered around Abraham Lincoln. We'd gone to the Lincoln Museum and his grave, but when we tried to tour his house... it was closed because Barack Obama was in town that day at the capitol, and the currators wanted to hear him speak. Instead we stood outside the house, and waved at the secret service who were patrolling the area from the roof of nearby buildings. Love being able to see the actual interior of the home!!
