Not to be all "well actually" on ya, but that was almost certainly a Hamer (which made 12 strings for Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick, who came up with the idea). Kramer, on the other hand, made plenty of 8-string basses in the 70s and early 80s; I've owned a couple and still have one that I'll never sell. But no 12s, I'm sure of that. Nice, you're playing the dUg Pinnick signature model. King's X's sound is very heavily impacted by that 12 string bass. From the melodic chording of "Fool You" to the driving rhythm breakdown of "Pretend" and beyond, dUg was THE MAN
For me Charles is hands down better than Davie 504. Davie is also insanely good but all he mostly play is slap as that is his preferred and expertise but Charles on the other hand more versatile and his instrumentals are all unique and different from the other which makes it so soothing to hear! And please don't even let me get started on his harmonics! He is just a different level beast!

This is a "dUg" Pinnick signature bass. He's the singer and bass player for the band King's X. Every member of that 3 man band is very talented, so I'm assuming he too can play this bass well.
Hopefully this will be played by more musicians, as it certainly adds that extra oomph. I agree, King's X, and the side projects should be explored by most people.

Years ago a music store had a Kramer 12 string bass but would not allow it to be played . I always thought that it would sound this awesome.
Reminds me of Spinal Tap/ Nigel Tufnell ,when he's showing his collection of guitars and amps - "This guitar can NOT be played".
Here's more info if you're interested: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve-string_bass
@@KevinMillard "not to do this douchey thing I'm about to do..."
@@KevinMillard I had a baby blue Kramer 8-string with an aluminum neck back in the early 90's. I was able to use it for a few years in the studio and on stage. I wish I didn't have to sell it for food, along with my Juno-60. :( Jeremy sounded pretty good on it.
@@slavojdyrdek He corrected a minor factual inaccuracy and provided a link to the information he cited. Douchey? I wish more people on the Internet had manners like that.
Not sure what just happened or how it’s even possible but that’s was absolutely phenomenal to observe while you were making it look musical 🤜🏻🤛🏻Dug would give a hug
Haven't seen anyone really work a 12-string bass since Doug Pinnick of King's X. This literally made me laugh out loud and smile big time! Love your bass work!!
Looks like this bass is a Pinnick signature model as his name is actually "Dug" as in the 12th fret
@@miles99 he goes by "dUg", I was enjoying the fretwork too much and missed the fret signature the first time.
You are correct sir...I saw "Doug" Pinnick for the first time in 1995, and have seen him at least 13 times since then. He made me sell my soul to get a Pedulla MVP 8 string fretless bass...best move EVER!
Tom Petersen from Cheap Trick plays one in concert now and again.
im a drummer of over 45 yrs...and you are one the best bassist i ever seen!!! practice makes perfect huh!!! cheers to you young brother!!
I hope Vai doesn't see this. He'll want to add a 4th neck to the Hydra!
Incredible groove. Loved this video.
Vai's Hydra video was quite a performance, but I enjoyed this A LOT more! That, and I'm a long-time guitarist.
Well, I am not a long-time guitarist, but a long-time music lover (little over 52 years experience...😉). Both performances are incredible in their own right. I don't see one as "better" than the other, just different. This piece has an awesome vibe - Extremely enjoyable!
Let's have them join forces!

Nice, you're playing the dUg Pinnick signature model. King's X's sound is very heavily impacted by that 12 string bass. From the melodic chording of "Fool You" to the driving rhythm breakdown of "Pretend" and beyond, dUg was THE MAN

@@Zion6969 I love Doug's playing. Have you listened to all his solo projects?
@@TimJackson-eq6iy I’ve listened to a few of his solo albums but nothing hits as hard as KX, KXM is pretty good but nothing beats Ty and Jerry.
Holy crap this sounds incredible! I've just found your channel 15 minutes ago, but I'm loving the content! Easy sub! 🤩
I wish I could go back to that moment where I discovered Charles the Master. You’re in for a treat my friend. This guy is a PRO ! 😉
Welcome to the fold, brother
I first saw him on Davie 504 during a bass battle. When Charles got done, Davie said something like " okay so that's it for the video"
Jeff Ament played a 12 string on such Pearl Jam hits as "Jeremy", but he never played it like you just did. haha
Tom Petersson used one in Cheap Trick.
Dug Pinnick of King's X plays one so often Schecter made him a signature 12 string bass.
@@ExtraDog I believe that is the actual model Charles is playing in this video. :)
What I always think of with 12 stringed bass
No one plays like Charles, lol.
I used to play with a bass player that played a fretless 8 string. It was quite fantastic! Nicely done. Enjoyed it.
One thing is that davie has played a bunch of different basses, like the 36 string, 24 string and all those other ones, but it’s more as a joke.
i know its just a persona, but i like Charles for just being himself... i dont care for Davie's persona at all... i know hes one of the top bassists... but imo you dont have to act all aloof like that
@@narmale true shit.
@@azxtnt and now 69
@SLR F He's playing a character, lighten up. He has a couple videos where he dropped the Davie504 persona.
Dear Charles Berthoud, never heard of a [Schecter dUg Pinnick DP-12], but I'm an oLd music fan, not a musician. what a gorgeous-sounding instrument. Striking. Brilliant. Enjoy your talent as well. Thank you. Don't stop!
So that's why King's X always has a distinct bass sound.
dUg also runs two channels simultaneously-a cleaner tone for lower frequencies and a heavily distorted tone for higher frequencies: th-cam.com/video/VbIZaWghUDE/w-d-xo.html
The song played on this was more than beautiful. I don’t play bass or any guitars, but holy hell does this sound godly.
Nice use of dUg Pinnick's signature 12-string. He is an immensely underrated bassist.
His instrument is as long as an upright, but his fingers are like a foot long. Probably makes it easier to play a beast like that.
First thing I noticed!!! Such a great band.
@@tonymason6686 yes, one of my absolute top
I agree! King's X was the first concert I ever went to, and dUg was the first guy I thought of when I saw the episode name
@@shaunkhan9049 I love Kings X... Very underrated band !!!!
This makes solo bass stuff sound more like a full song without losing what makes bass solo stuff sound good.
Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick was the first to record with a 12-string bass on the Heaven Tonight album. Also on its follow-up album, Dream Police
He played it on their famous 'At Budakahn' album. IIRC he helped invent it.
I'm sorry for ever even looking at a bass. Rock on man!
I played guitar for about 20 years. So, while not a bass player, I can appreciate and understand what I'm seeing. And I'm not saying this lightly...
...you're the most amazing bass player I've ever seen in my life. From any genre, from any age. You are off the hook.

Cool playing, man!
I first heard the 12 string bass when Tom Petersson from Cheap Trick played it on “Speak Now Or Forever Hold Your Peace” on Live at Budokan.
Dig it, man!!
You are an inspiration; I found some of your work on TikTok and went to TH-cam. I can’t stop listening. I also like that you foster good habits for practicing and playing. Once someone gets above Stu Hamm, everyone almost becomes equal. Absolutely love your groove with the 12 string.
This composition has one major flaw,
It should be at least another 2 minutes in length….
Charles, you are freakin’ unbelievable! 👍🏻❤️😎
Always rhythmically tight and in the pocket.
Always with a great tone and beautiful intonation.
Always musically enjoyable.
Yay Charlie !!!
I'm a guitar player and this guy gives me like some insane amounts of inspiration and ideas love is playing its funky its fresh it is amazing
This is a "dUg" Pinnick signature bass. He's the singer and bass player for the band King's X. Every member of that 3 man band is very talented, so I'm assuming he too can play this bass well.
Ive had fenders from the get go precion and jazz.. I knew abt Rickenbacker. This video has me in awe...awesome sound.
I like how it's similar to the solo that Davie did but in a more Charles-ish way, 10/10
Hopefully this will be played by more musicians, as it certainly adds that extra oomph. I agree, King's X, and the side projects should be explored by most people.
I think it would go AMAZINGLY with a 12-string guitar too
been a Kings X fan since 86!!! Doug - now Dug - is extremely underrated!!! Has always had a unique sound, and is an extremely nice guy!!!..Charles is killing on the 12 string pops....holy hell man
Missing the massive Tech21 Dug distortion though. King's X brought to life amazing three-piece sonics. Such an underated band
That Schekter has an amazing sound, and I can't imagine anybody more qualified than Charles to wring out every last bit of it's potential!!!
Fantastic job, Charles! 😊👍
I'm not a huge bass fan, but that just blew my mind! It sounds so good and full! Thanks for sharing your videos.
Seeing as how you're playing Pinnick's signature, the both of you really need to jam on something.
Starting at 1:13, it literally sounded like several instruments at once. Very cool!
(that's because it is...sshhhhhh....)
Wow tapping on this that thing must be difficult as hell. Even after watching your videos for so long and learning about more advanced bass stuff myself, you still manage to blow my mind!

That is an absolutely spectacular sound. Never heard anythig close to it in my life. The way you play is out of this world my friend.
hey this is my sisters account but i just wanted to comment that i love your content and the way you play i am currently trying to get a bass but no luck i just wanted to say that you inspired me and as i cannot play bass (YET) that it has helped me in my spirit for marching band in my high school I've played trumpet for 3 years now and since i cant play bass i put that inspiration through my trumpet it has helped me get better in other areas of my musicality thank you!
That intro tune just went into my soul, filled it with delight and waved friendliy when it flew away to the next victim of it's power.
Ya it's real cool man ♥
Dude, that opening destroyed my brain. I hope so hard you do more with that. Loved the entire thing, but that opening was heaven on earth!
That's one of the coolest things I've ever seen involving a stringed instrument. Seriously good playing and sounded awesome!
Charles always giving us a enjoyable evening. It's incredible how much your mind works to have such creativity and unique sound and techniques!
The tonality of the 12 string [music] really has a Stevie Wonder vibe for me. I'd love to hear more 12 string songs!
Edit: added the word "music" to clarify and avoid further strife.
The tonality? 🙄🤦♂️
Are you trying to say tone?
Look up King’s X for just about the only 12 string bass usage out there.

@@Iradicos "tonality: the character of a piece of music as determined by the key in which it is played or the relations between the notes of a scale or key"
