Fatty Arbuckle in a Serious Silent Western is the last thing one would expect, but I'm absolutely all for it! Brings to mind Jackie Gleason in his serious role in The Hustler some 40 years later. Never underestimate the acting ability of great comedians. 👍 Thanks PizzaFlix! By the way, this print of a 1920 silent film is absolutely beautiful.
It made me think of "Fatso" with Dom DeLuise; a great film, directed and co-starring Anne Bancroft. But not because of anything physical, more about the emotions that both Slim and Dominic have about their weight.
@l.a.gothro3999 Marty (1955) is another great film with Ernest Borginine in the lead, which reflects upon similar themes as well. Ernest won the Oscar for best lead actor for it even. By the way, I referred to him as "Fatty" Arbuckle for the same reason I would refer to Joseph Frank Keaton as "Buster" Keaton.
So far it's quite different from the comedies he usually starred as in. There's a western he made with Buster Keaton called Out West (1918). I think it's the funniest film he directed of those I've seen.
🥰 Thank you Pizzaflix 🍕🍕🍕Great movie 🤠🐴 Roscoe Arbuckle a great talent ❤👍Watched this movie last week , I liked so much that I am watching it again 🎥❤🍕A double treat , good old western and a silent film 🎞 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕
Great story, great acting by a great comedian! Mr. Arbuckle was falsely accused of a heinous crime but was later exonerated, but not before so much damage had been done to his reputation.
Beautiful print, gorgeous cinematography...This film was released in the fall of 1920 and was still on the bill in late 1921 in some theaters around the country as late as December of that year. At the time of its filming sometime in 1920, Jean Acker, who played Echo's friend Polly, was only a few months from having married Rudolph Valentino in November 1919, and then abandoning the marriage in spite of entreaties from Valentino. Director George Melford would cross paths with Valentino in July of 1921 when the filming of The Sheik would begin. By November of 1921 the studio was announcing "Sheik Week" as the film rolled out across the country...tragically, the night of the premiere in New Haven on November 27, a fire broke out and many people were injured and there were deaths as the theater was destroyed. The New York Evening World from November 28, 1921 carried another film-related story right next to the New Haven theater fire headlines along with a full banner across the top of the paper. That story was titled “Arbuckle In His Own Defense Goes On Stand And Gives His Version of Actress’s Death.” It’s a story still remembered to this day, unlike the fatal New Haven fire. A video on my channel tells the whole story...
What a great upload! I've seen a lot of Arbuckle's comedies over the years but had no idea he made a serious Western. But he got in some comic bits just the same, bless his heart. The script had a number of nice twists and turns - wasn't sure how everything was going to turn out. IMDB claims that one of the Indians was Buster Keaton, which is possible - lots of name actors appeared as uncredited extras in early films (the silent BEN-HUR was full of major actors in the stands for the chariot race scene). The actor playing Bud Lane, A. Edward Sutherland, was one of the original Keystone Kops but turned to directing in the mid 1920s and worked with W.C. Fields and Chaplin. He was also briefly married to Louise Brooks and was the nephew of comedian Charlotte Greenwood.
Reminds me, oddly enough, of the Robert Frost poem "The Road Not Taken". Arbuckle's ability to play this more straight forward role might have led to more serious films both during the silent and early sound era, were it not for...
